The One True Fighting Game - Divekick

  • For many gamers, fighting games are the up there in pinnacle of complexity. Precise and specific inputs. Constantly playing mindgames with your opponent. And a very steep learning curve if you’re serious about getting competitive, mean that when you’re first getting into the genre, it can be a little bit frustrating.
But what if I told you that for a time, one of the most popular fighting games in the world used only two buttons? No joystick, no d-pad, just two, giant buttons. This is the story of a game that tried to bring simplicity back to the fighting game genre. A game that parodied and mocked the very community that embraced it.
A cult classic which took the FGC by storm, and appeared at some of the biggest tournaments in the world. This, is Divekick.

An important bit of context you missed: the reason they were joking about having a game with only dive and kick is that divekicks are exceptionally good in every fighting game. Any character with a divekick ends up top tier. Being able to change the angle of your jump is a tremendous tool that can counter anti-airs and often leads to combos. See: Yun, Gouki, Cammy, and Rufus.

The perfect fighting game for the post-arcade, Dave & Busters era. This deserves its own cabinet, with two giant obnoxious buttons. It would fit right in beside Doodle Jump--the platformer that has only a giant joystick, which only moves left and right.

Good video but it was an oversight not to detail how oppressive dive kicks were in FG games of the time and how that landscape influenced Divekick, i.e. SF4 Rufus, MvC3 Wolverine, MK9 Kung Lao, etc.
It wasn't just parodies of FGC community members and FGC memes; it was satire on several fighting game metas.

This game answered my prayers when it came out. My locals were all really mad at me because they couldn't deal with Amaterasu in mvc3, and the common refrain was 'If my character was as simple as the dog, I'd win every time too!' (Or you could stop playing Hsien-ko, but what do I know) Cue the simplest game ever. So simple it's actually a joke, and I'm winning there too, but now their humiliation is a funny joke. I know this is the one true fighting game, because I've seen it take a man from the cockiest thing this side of a chicken plant into a pillar of pure salt in under thirty seconds. Simplicity is also efficiency, after all, and the FGC is nothing if not an industrial salt mine.

This has made me realize just how much 2D fighting games have defined the fighting game genre as opposed to 3D. Dive kick is simple, but it's still all about space control and movement within that 2D space. But all the rules and intricacies of a 2D game become mostly irrelevant when it comes to 3D fighters like Virtua Fighter or SoulCalibur.
I kind of suspect that part of the reason Tekken is as popular in the FGC as it is has to do with it playing more like a 2D game, with the best defensive tech being backdashes that allow you to still block as opposed to the riskier sidesteps in VF. Tekken also seems to be more footsie based as opposed to the Rock, Paper, Scissor mixup mindgames of VF or DOA. Even SoulCalibur, which has you choosing between horizontal or vertical attacks, does still have an emphasis on space control with the varying weapon ranges. I think the Netherealm games do draw a bit more from some 3D fundamentals, since in those games mid attacks can actually beat crouching blocks like they do in 3D fighters, and you don't have to rely on jump ins or only one slow overhead
I guess my point is, while there are many types of fighting games, it really does seem like the FGC in general (even including things like the Smash community) really is mostly concerned with what's a more narrow style of gameplay, based on who can control and move through space better, as opposed to high-intensity, fast-paced RPS, where every move has a hard counter and you need to choose the right one.
But maybe I don't know what I'm talking about. Just feels like there's a whole other side of fighting games that is being neglected.

The accessibility factor of this game is something I seriously wish more fighting games had. Like, I used to play Guilty Gear a lot, yeah? Back when Accent Core was around. I played it a LOT. I did the whole Git Gud thing. The more I advanced though, the more I found that whoever I was playing with just... wasnt having much fun (outside of events and such). Why? Because as a couple of friends put it, they just couldnt pull off the crazy moves/combos that I was doing, or that they saw in some videos, whatever. They hit a point where they felt like they couldnt compete, and once that feeling sets in, the fun drains. And for me, if my opponent isnt having a good time... neither am I. Most of my friends ended up just sort of dropping the genre entirely, because no matter where they looked, every game was like that to a degree (with Smash being the only exception I can think of at the time... but even that got bonkers at high levels).
Divekick though? It's an example of what I wish the genre could be. Even a new player could pull off all the fun moves that they saw the pros use. Yeah, they may not quite yet grasp the ideas behind those moves or understand how to REALLY use them, but the fact that they could do those moves AT ALL increased their confidence. And the one hit KO thing meant that, even against a particularly tough opponent... they might still win a round or two. After all, even a pro makes mistakes, and it only takes ONE hit... what a confidence boost if THAT happened, eh? And, on top of that, the game didnt take itself seriously AT ALL. It was funny, the moves were totally goofy. The developers went in a direction that other fighters seem to avoid, and it just increased the fun factor even more. You didnt even need to get the in-jokes at all to get a laugh out of it.
And then, best of all, if those new players kept up with it? They'd start to see real progress of the sort that, previously, they thought they couldnt achieve. It showed them that yes, they really CAN do it. And maybe they could handle other fighting games too.
Seriously, the genre needs more of that. And I really wish it had more. These days I dont really play fighting games anymore... when my friends' interest vanished, so did mine (yeah, I know, I could play people online or something, and that's nice and all, but... without them involved it sorta lost all meaning). And maybe they could regain that interest if something like this was out there.
Anyway, just my thoughts on it. A lot of fond memories associated with this game.

Footsies and Amongus Arena are the True One True Fighting Games because they are perfectly balanced with all the tools. Divekick is the most accessible fighting game

As much as I love Divekick I don't think it holds up today as the most raw and simple game that embodies fighting game fundamentals. That title definitely goes to Footies by HiFight
