I just found for channel and am bingeing all your videos. Thank you for all the information you share with us, your channel doesn't have near the subscribers it should. Well done!
Ooops hit enter instead of return. Anyway I am not in a position to live in my van @ this point of my life, however minimizing the stifling temps late afternoon in my van would be awesome. Maybe even some 1-2 day outings n sleep as I can. Thank you Dave, for your time and sharing your knowledge and journey with us.
That's the good stuff! I have the Renogy DCC50S and I think I should have gone with separate pieces but we'll see. (Haven't had my maiden voyage yet.) I also have a 2008 Toyota Sienna. Mine is AWD with the JOR lift. I'm still building my cabinets and bed. Using a lot of tips from you and Eric. Thanks for making your videos and helping everyone out.
8 months later . . . How's it going John? Your build sounds amazing
@@DaveOTG Been done for a awhile. I've done about 5-6 trips. Still adding little tweaks and adjustments. Next is building a custom roof rack with 80/20.
Space is tight and I totally see why you went the box truck route for more space. I am enjoying the AWD and have gone some places that couldn't with a normal van so that has been fun! Let me know if you ever come through Vegas and need a place to park!
Thanks for sharing, very helpful
Questtion on this MPPT controller. I hae 2 house to start batteries on my boat. Got to the boat and app said they were floating. Showed 20v from 2 100 watt panels 0 amps. When my boat is running my battery monitor shows -1.59 amp draw? Why? The voltage is 14.8 from motors. Shunt is installed correct to a neg bus bar. All house loads are off during readings. This also has a ACR
Manual says to mount on a non-flammable surface. Did you find any problems mounting on wood?
None, but I would allow much more air flow above the unit, than the way installed it in the video
Lmao . Wise words "buy once cry once"
Hey Dave,
Excellent videos. Really learning a lot. Total newbie, starting the plan to build out my new (to me) 2005 Kia Sedona. My question is about your solar panel, I believe you said it was a 370Watt. Could you please post the specifications? I am trying to find an affordable panel that will fit on the roof of my minivan.
I found a 400Watt Canadian Solar for under $400 with $200 shipping, but, the panel is about 80’x40’. Way too big…
Any input would be greatly appreciated,
Cheers
Bill
Mine was 310W. Just measure your roof and find a panel that will fit. I would pass on that canadian solar as you can get used (local) house panels for about .50 per watt and they have 20 year warranties on them
It looks like you blocked most of the venting fins above the MPPT. User manual states 4 inches clearance above and below the unit for cooling. Have you had any issues?
You are correct. I’ve moved it since
Wow, the mppt controller did make a difference but compared to the renogy controller I have now, I think with similar size panel, it is not time to upgrade yet. Do you have 3 deep cycle AGM batteries?
Great video
I am returning a renogy controller because the Bluetooth connectivity and application suck. I just purchased the Victron 100/30 and am hoping it's as good as folks say
The app is basically what I showed. A Smart stunt will give you the numbers you're looking for like exact capacity of battery etc
Thanks for this video! So with this do you still need other components for your solar? I see your list above includes "Thlevel 30A Solar Charge Controller" for example, and a separate "battery isolator". I do understand the need for the battery isolator, just surprised it has to be purchased separately. Also which make/model batteries do you have this system connected to? Thanks!
Main components: solar panel, charge controller, batteries. These were lead acid. I have upgraded to LFP batteries. thanks for the comment hth
Hi, Do you have to hook a ground cable for this? The instructions say to do it.
Yes the negative goes to my batteries negative
Sweet!
Hi...can you also monitor "State of Charge" or % your batteries are charged w this controller...? Thx
Unfortunately not, you'll need a shunt
@@DaveOTG Thank you!
Awesome video. I have to ask how did you screw down the panels like that to look so stealthy like? What screws did you use to drill into the roof like that? You truly have a hidden solar panel's
They're not screwed into the roof. They're mounted to the side rails with basic panel hardware!
@@DaveOTG Oh cool. Can you possibly make a video one day showing in more detail? You did such a great job making them look stealthy
Are you going earth the case?
It has a negative ground
Im wanting to go up to 24v, how do i do that? No videos on turning it from 12 to 24
In the settings for the victron connect app
@@DaveOTG so just the dongel is all i need to go tp 24volt?
Good afternoon Dave. I just came across your video of your van, with the plans, modifications, window tint etc. Great content, very organized and well presented. May I ask how the effective the window tint is in minimizing heat to the interior of your van now that summer is here. Any data between average outside temps and interior van temps @ the same time of day- say late afternoon?
Hello Grandma D. They are invaluable at controlling temp. They block harmful UV rays and heat. They also provide so much privacy. You can see out but they can't see in. My tint is Ceramic 5% Limo all around. This is the best option, but cost more. In the long run it's worth every penny. With the tint, fan/vent, window coverings/curtains I've napped fine in 100+ degrees. I talk more about this in my "6 months of Van life / Questions and answers video. The other way to stay cool is installing a roof vent, again invaluable. Hope this helps and stay cool out there. 🚀
@@DaveOTG Thank you so much for your reply. I will check into those items. Perhaps i will choose something less pricey@ the moment- my van si @ 2000 Chevy Venture, already has a rebuilt engine( before I purchased the van 3 1/2 yrs ago for $1000. Trans has been having shifting roughly for quite so time as well, but having said all this, I’m not certain… wish i could rely on this old van to keep going as long as I do… Regardless your input/ information will not be wasted. Thank you Dave. I’ll be following you on your builds and journeys. Thanks for taking us along with you.
@@DaveOTG When ware you going to do a Van Life Cooking video of some of the meals you cook and how?
Hi fantastic video, a friend is selling a EPever 40amp solar controller with the MT50 , so debating weather to go for the 30 amp Victron Smart solar controller or EPever what i have is a 300 watt solar panel and 2x 100ah agm batteries which one would be best and what amp would i need
30 amp should be fine and victron would be my personal choice
@@DaveOTG Thank you very much
👍🤗Super
I downloaded the app for this , but it's asking for a pin code for pairing , where do I find the pin code??
The bottom says it's 000000
@@DaveOTG I put that in mine and it was still saying incorrect pin. Now my app is not even listing my controller as a device on the list. What do I do for that?
@@tinaperez9756 Sry late reply, did you figure this out? For anyone else reading this, there is a code on the side of the box that resets the BT in case you forgot your pin
@@DaveOTG thanks yes. Bern done some time ago
No one seems to be mentioning what to do if you're app is not viewing the controller. What then?
Have you tried pairing them together first? The pin is 000000
@@DaveOTG the code was not working. Tried 6 zeros. 4 zeros. 1234. Nothing working. Besides at that point my phone app was not seeing the device. I had to turn the contoller off then on again and then it was listed as a device on the app. Ended up having to change the code. The zeros were not working. I have to go back tomorrow to program the battery specs in after I find out what they are. I found a guy from some inverter place that is helping me over the phone. Let's hope I can still reach him tomorrow.
There are default specs for your specific battery chemistry. I would just use those and not mess with entering your own.
@@DaveOTG I contacted Interstate for the specs for my battery. Then I was able to get someone on the phone that told me how to change the specs. It was only off .4 but the time to charge was off by 2 hours. So now I know how to do it. Victron should have better tech support for their customers than they do. Actually there is Zero tech support unless you search and search and search videos or online forums. And even then it's not a Victron professional. I bought mine from Amazon so going back and trying to find the actual "seller" is damn near impossible.
Support is here: www.victronenergy.com/support
"buy once, cry once" generally means I want to spend more than I need and need to justify it (to the wife?). Buy once, get raped several times no matter what the cost. It took Victron sending me 3 different units before I got one that actually worked.
They do work 98% of the time, which is much better than 50% with other controllers.
You missed a huge step and the reason why I cam here: the dial setting for lithium batteries (or others) not even mentioned. I set mine (Victron SmartSolar to dial setting 7, then it asked for 3 ADDITIONAL options after that! The manual does not explain these 3 additional settings, and EVER SINGLE YTr does not even mention dial settings.
Hi..u pinoy?
