I watched 5 bulldozers try to pull a tank that had berried it's self in mud. Only the 50Cal turret stuck out. It was 0 decrees too. Well the bulldozers failed, but then a M88 showed up from the 16th Engr. Bn. They hooked it up and without even a little strain, it pulled the tank out. I knew they were beasts, but never knew how mighty a beast they were until then.
Dennis Athey as a civilian I got to drive them in the cramped motorpool, after a short time I could put one anywhere with ease. I miss the sound and feel of power these things have. I pulled a het and m1000 with all the brakes locked down through a sandy patch on the tank trail , 88 didn't break a sweat I did later though over correction while steering at 30 mph I almost lost it lol. Back off the throttle I learned gets her back under control. What a beast
I imagine that, since it's a proven platform designed from the getgo to pull the heaviest loads the army can offer it using running gear that's been in the inventory for over 50 years at this point, that they don't break *at all*.
They don't necessarily 'break' as they mostly just come apart. Getting something like a car body stuck in the track sprocket can actually 'roll' the track end connectors off the sprocket teeth and then any further operation will drive the track on the track face, damaging any number of track segments to the point of needing replacement. Not the BEST demonstration of body crushing I've seen. Used to do this once a month in Korea with the M-151A1 MUTT Jeep. Flatten em', stack 'em, half vertical on a 5Ton S&P open top trailer and haul them to Seoul to sell for scrap.
In the 70’s used to operate the M-88. Ours had 1000 horse power gasoline engine and the vehicle held 452 gallons of gas. Motor sure sound different with the diesel motor.
The older units had more HP then the diesels. M-88s had a 1050HP fuel injected gasoline engine in the rear. Technical name is an AVSI 1790, Air Cooled, 60º V design, Supercharged, Injected.
I hate this vehicle, it's so loud, and it puffs black smoke at you. Whenever this vehicle had to come to you, it was a bad day. I hated the process of taking the m1 Abrams pack in and out of the tank.
At actual combat speed, the spade goes down and that shit gets pushed out of the way...don't want that on the underside where it can blow. Where is this?...Jefferson City?

That Allison XT-1410 tranny does neutral steer perfectly. I have many hours on the A1 version at BMY as an engineer in the 70's
@@larrydimond728 it seems most people with older military equipment are constantly scared to break it
Car said I’m going too! 😊. Shell of cars, no drive trains included.
