The beauty of our trimaran is in its foldability - it unfolds to be sailed and folds to be trailered. So far we’ve unfolded her on the water, but in this episode we attempt to unfold on land (for the first time!) so we can fix a leak in the hull.
The big worry is, without the stability of the water on the opposing float/ama, the boat might want to roll off the trailer, and THAT we want to prevent at all costs!

Kirk, your statement near the end of this video about your excitement is heartwarming. You folks will be able to do so many repairs/modificatons with the boat on the cribbing and jack stands. I feel you enthusiasm. Blessings to you three and a half.
You would normally use marine sealant like Sikaflex or the US equivalent, put a bead where your finger is at 15' 18" then hand tighten the nut on the inside and clean off the excess sealant leave to dry overnight then fully tighten the nut another 1/4 to 1/2 turn. Job done.
Installing through hulls almost daily for my job all you need is to clean up the surfaces and put a bead of 5200 on it. It is ok that it wobbles and isnt a perfect tight fit in the hole that is what the nut I for on the inside to tighten it up. I use 5200 fast cure and launch the boat a few minutes later and never had an issue with it leaking. Also make sure the arow is facing fwds on the inside of the boat on the tranducer
From the yard's experience, 5200 might be fastest and strongest but 5200 is permanent never intended to be removed. Not sure I agree that applies to that part. I think I would use one grade more removable.
As someone considering buying a trimaran and keeping it on on a trailer in my yard… This video is very helpful
To get my 18 foot yacht off its trailer, I built a wooden stand to support the rear and jacked the stern up so it could fit underneath, and then built a wooden gantry to lift the front with a chain hoist and then placed some wooden blocks under the bow. It was constructed for a total cost of around $200, which was for the chain hoist, and it works a charm that I use each year after winter to get it ready for a summer sailing season. The good thing is that I can do the whole process on my own without needing any additional assistance.
Renata seems like such an intelligent and advanced child - her verbal skills are amazing to me! Does that make her easier to parent, or more difficult?
We don't have anyone to compare her to, but I would imagine increased communication would only make it easier. Kirk and I are often grateful at how well we can understand her needs and wants because she can communicate so proficiently. The only negative is that sometimes it can be harder to remember that mentally and emotionally she still is just a toddler!
Great fun, guys. I agree that the depthsounder would have probably been fine with just a quick clean up and a squirt of quality sealant, but whilst you were there....good call to have a proper look and prep the surfaces for a long lasting job. Check the sealant instructions, sometimes the correct method is to apply the gear, just snag up the fitting then let it set. Final tightening after the product has cured, makes sense when one thinks about it! Cheers, thanks for sharing!👏👏👏

You should get high density foam cube blocks... Two under the main hull and two under each ama at a height higher than required to put the trailer under the main hull.
I will sheepishly admit that I watched the WHOLE ad just for Lauren's lovely hair in that clip. But in other news, I will say I agree with Kirk on how awesome it was to see that trimaran "flying" through your front yard just outside your front door. How freakin' cool!!

This may not be an issue when I post this comment, but do the stands your using supposed to be used on grass? Maybe a 3/3 board under each foot will prevent them from sinking in the dirt if that placement is long term. Maybe not a big deal as the majority of the weight is on the centerline and you have your Post stack under the hull for support.
Hey Kirk and Lauren noticed one of the base notes on some music reminded me of the movie ""Uncle Buck" and the accentuated version of that base as John Candy gets in that old car, maybe you can use it, the sound itself is just hilarious, Live from OK.

Seems to be a tradition for Trimarans to have really tacky names, I bought one called Tri-Fling, but I've seen plenty of cats and mono's with tacky names too.
You briefly mentioned sawhorses under the mast. Optimum placement for 2 sawhorses in 21% in from each end. This gives the minimum bending moment for a simply supported beam

@@artsmith103 The 21% only works on a beam with a constant moment of inertia -- a whole sailboat does not meet the criteria. What you DO have to watch for is maintaining proper tongue weight -- 10% of the boat and trailer weight. I failed to get my boat all the way forward on my single axle trailer, didn't know I had negative tongue weight, and it almost swapped ends when I was trailering.

Awkward wire in the way. Maybe yours is different or stuck, but usually the sensor part to which the wire is attached comes out of the through-hull fitting itself. That allows you to take it out when necessary in the water.
Consider how to prevent your trailer from causing leaks around the through-hull transducer. I don't see a way to modify the trailer to keep from putting pressure on the transducer. As the boat is pulled up onto the trailer, it's going to put pressure on the transducer for several feet, perhaps even the entire length of the trailer, depending on how deep the boat launch is. Consider moving the transducer closer to the stern, so it doesn't have to rest on the center of the trailer at all. This will decrease the frequency of the transducer hitting the bottom or rocks when you pull up at a shallow beach. Anytime you can have a solid hull is better for preventing leaks and having a penetrated hull. Although many people love a through-hull transducer, it doesn't have to be in its current location. Moving it further back will offer it better protection from the trailer. It could also be swapped for an external transducer mounted on the stern. That might completely prevent future leaks caused by the weight of the boat pressing down on the trailer where the transducer is mounted.

Good job all the way round! The boat looks awesome setting there opened up. Personally however, I for one wouldn't want one of those trimoran type folding boats. Too much hastle every time setting up, taking down, setting the mast, removing the mast... etc, no thanks pal. But that's my humble opinion. Be safe always from the Philippines 💕
Looking forward to seeing the barn progress and the trimaran out sailing. I hope you two got a gin pole that was the proper size to step that mast that is if you plan on stepping it without using a lift or crane.
I’m sure you had other reasons to get the boat of the trailer but maybe a 4 or 5 inch hole saw would have gained you access to that through hull fitting. Fun to watch your happy family grow!

Alcohol. LOL, I just put on a smile and plan for the first week in April to launch. With the eclipse in early April next year I'm planning to have a dockside party and have friends down to watch. Albeit the heater onboard will be on 75! @@SailingSoulianis
Too bad those lightweight flexible solar panels weren't more reliable. You could clip them on the outrigger netting and have a ton of solar power.
I like the idea of a solar kayak like boat with inflatable/removable outriggers that use lightweight aluminum poles & netting. Some lightweight folding 📂 solar panels to clip onto the netting, small solar system, electric boat motor and throw in a small sail. Lol

I would do everything I could to make a bomber depth reading repair. If you don't fix the leak, you'll probably find out when you're in the water then you'll have to do the whole jacking process again. Happy Trails!

As the OSB (plywood) absorbs moisture it will likely bend. Clean the surfaces and seal the transducer with butyl rubber sealant.

Oh no! Just thinking that this is a great video. I love sailboats. I am "into" trimarans. Seeing you guys play with your trimaran puts it all together. Maybe I'll figure out where you guys are but looks like Maybe Lake Michigan, Superior, or Huron but not Erie. My early sailing was the very west end of Erie but for the last 45 years I've been here in New Hampshire. Portsmouth ~ salt water ~ then there is a big lake in New Hampshire. Ok Ok too much about me. And so just to say. I am "on board" with supporting your You Tube effort. Retired with a fixed income so I can't offer much. I'm into Ama's ~ yep. Yes, Lauren, we were well aware you were pregnant, love. ☺️ Kirk … the big thing was “on your own land”. Both … that’s a massive job ahead but you’ll get it done. Have you considered building a gantry or renting a crane of some form? 👏🏻
We considered it briefly when building the boat house. But it is massively expensive. I think we'll be ok with the jack stands for the work we are anticipating.

@SailingSoulianis Greg is amazing. I got to help him deliver a 44' Chris White trimaran from San Diego to San Fran. Well, we didn't quite get all the way there. He's got a video on that too. Greg still owns the 36/39 which he mostly built and modfied himself. It's down in Baja right now, I think. Few know as much about Corsair/Farriers and boat building and refurbishment as he does.
I saw his post looking for crew for that trip, and really wanted to go, but couldn't make it work timing wise! I would have loved to sail that boat. We toured it when it was in Chicago.@@mikemendes7598
. Yeah. Wish we'd actually sailed much. The 1st day and night there was no wind. Then we had 20 - 25 knots right on the nose and lumpy seas. It was no fun.

Needs a fresh coat of bottom paint while you access to the bottom of the boat.
Yea we thought we’d never do bottom paint again after applying copper coat to the tartan. Guess we were wrong.
Yes that bottom paint looks very rough! I removed the ablative bottom paint altogether from my F-82R floats this past spring and it made a HUGE difference in boat performance especially in lighter winds!!! I would recommend something far smoother like Baltoplate or VC-Offshore.

New boatname is needed. Apparantly you will be a family of four. Wonderfull, however quite awkward if you want to rename a folding trimaran. Brainwave...."Fourfold" might be a great name. And change it again if the family become five into "Fivefold" etc etc etc. Soulianis II is an option too. However, bit boring, I guess.
How will you solve the issue with the trailer hitting the depth sounder, thus another potential leak.
It's a good question which is one of the reasons we were considering removing it altogether. It's not ideal for going on and off the trailer....

Sailor trailer! Maybe we were more interesting then! What we are doing now is probably the middle boring part (before we go sailing again) to some people and the exciting part for others. We will never appeal to everyone. We’re just living our lives the way we want to do it.
