The world of Gilbert and Sullivan comes to vivid life in director Mike Leigh's extraordinary dramatization of the staging of the duo's legendary 1885 comic opera The Mikado. Topsy-Turvy is an unexpected period delight from one of contemporary cinema's great artists. - Krátké a kreslené filmy
Aahhh it wouldn't be a nineties trailer without a classic deep voiced narrator
“In a world…”
"You might as well open the window and shout down the street"
Still applicable today where some people find it necessary to talk so loudly whilst on their phone that you can hear them on the other side of the street...
A magnificently detailed epic about the creative process and the push-pull of collaboration. For me, this is Leigh's finest film; a passionate and oh-so-ambitious work. "Laughter. Tears. Curtain." BRAVO!!!
I must have watched this movie half a dozen times. It's my all-time favorite.
Saw this movie when I was thirteen. It's been a while, but I've loved it ever since. It got me into Gilbert & Sullivan, and (by extensions) operas, classical music, technical theater, Victorian settings, and Japanese culture. It brought so much to my interests.
Garmiet - What a WONDERFUL gift this movie has been to you, and, by extension, so many others.
LOVE this film! It’s among my top 10 of all time.
Then you should really appreciate Madama Butterfly and Turandot by Puccini, right?
@@nikolajvsevolodovic - Gilbert and Sullivan is in a class all its own, and while Madame Butterfly and Turandot are both wonderful operas, you might love G&S and not really like the others.
My experience as well. This movie changed my life. I wish someone would make a movie centered around The Yeomen of the Guard.
I absolutely adore this film. I'm so glad it got made. The cast makes you forget you're watching a movie.
What a terrific movie! Thanks Mike Leigh and everyone who participated in the making of Topsy-Turvy.
Allan Corduner is phenomenal. I had the privilege of seeing him play Head Steward Mr. Etches in the musical Titanic on Broadway(much more faithful to history than the unfortunate film). He also appeared in Call the Midwife in a most moving role. I wish Mike Leigh would cast him again.
Lol this trailer style feels so dated. I love it. 😂
This movie brought back fond memories performing in The Mikado in grade 12.
How many directors besides Mike Leigh have the range to make both movies like this and Naked?
Brilliant film!
Awesome!
Sergeant Frank Butterman and George Merchant from HF and Horace Slughorn and Peter Pettigrew from HP 😂
Wonderful film
This looks really good.
If you're at all a Gilbert and Sullivan fan, you'll absolutely love it.
@@katherinewolfe I love getting a reply like this after so many years. I saw and loved the movie, bought the Criterion, and it’s now a treasured favorite.
@ phxsns1 You like delayed replies? Here‘s another. And I share your admiration for this great historically as authentic as possible movie
Watching it with commentary makes it even better! I love how it is of course about Gilbert and Sullivan but it also explores the creative process of putting on a show…
And yet theaters today are hesitant, to say the least, to play The Mikado by G&S...
The Mikado is one of the more difficult of G&S pieces, even though it is one of the most entertaining.
@@katherinewolfe the current controversy with The Mikado is over the stereotyping of Asian culture in general, and Japanese traits in particular. Also...that no Asians have typically been cast in most productions.
@@sharongelfand5065 Dang, I’d have thought more people would be concerned over the suicide jokes.
@@ARCtheCartoonMasterif your comment is serious...I'm just stating truth. Many production companies, large and small, have made adjustments to the plot, script and casting because of loud complaints.
As you well know, the rest is farce or satire.
@@sharongelfand5065 - Wokeism ruins everything it touches. Changing their opera is like painting clothes on Botticelli’s Venus so as not to offend. Blasphemy.
Se ve muy buena
Has anyone noticed the DVD and Blu-ray covers have a different type of face on them?
Easily my favorite musical film (frankly, I generally despise that film genre).
Come look with me - Diskclosure
The the same face upside down right?
Right
how good is richard attlee??????
0:10 PHIL!!! 🤓👋
Never seen this
There is a free movie here on yt 😉☺😁
If you like G&S at all, you have to watch this, it's wonderful.
@@katherinewolfe I'm not much of a G&S fan, but it's such a wonderful movie that as long as you don't actively loathe their work, I would think you'd enjoy it.
