So glad you liked this one. I was very nervous making this submission. Some people do find their music repetitive. Not me. As for genre, they are very hard to peg. Let's go with a mixture: Alternative dance synthpop post-punk new wave dance-rock electronica. Ha! That should cover all the bases. Lex, you should know I almost requested a Smiths song. Is that a band you are real familiar with? As far as the group goes, Bernard Sumner is the vocalist. I think he does a great job. His voice fits the music, just like Ian Curtis was perfect for Joy Division. Peter Hook on bass gets a lot of fanfare. Deservedly so. He really stands out on several New Order tracks. To me, the real star is Stephen Morris on drums. Most people think this song has a drum machine, and they would be correct: Morris is a human drum machine. You can find the video of him playing this song. It's mesmerizing. Power, Corruption, and Lies was one of those albums that came along and helped me get through a really rough patch. For your next one, I agree with the others: Blue Monday
You think your nervous about _your_ request, I have some heavy, borderline extreme Metal requests waiting in the wings from CD's I purchased for N&L (yet all the bands "lyrics" are not extreme as people would think) ;). I hope folks don't hesitate with most of the music they want to share, as I think its the lyrical topics that would scare me away only, not the "sound" of the music.
Part of my adult life was listening to New Order and other Alternative/New Wave (and early Industrial) bands because of a younger dude that was in my life of friends, a strange friend, but he turned into a real jerk, I vowed never to have friends like that again (very odd time in my life and who I hungout with). But some of his music stayed with me throughout my life.
I KNEW Lexi would like it, wasn't sure about Nick :).
I'll always remember 1st learning about them and the "video" for "The Perfect Kiss", I think N&L would enjoy _watching_ this video . . . .

or Bizarre love triangle perhaps, it's very hard not to ever listen to this band unless you are a millenial. One of my favorite song is The perfect kiss that reminds me my Club days in New York back in the late 80's.

New Order is one of the GREATEST, most iconic bands of all-time. As a fan of The Cure, I’m surprised you hadn’t heard of them before. Glad you finally discovered them

I was a prog rock "nerd", then I became the "new waver" in the early 80's in mid-high school years complete with wild hair and makeup. I've spent countless hours on the dance floor to this band and many others. Of course I never forgot or forsake the prog rock and classic of where I came from.
Fun fact: an acquaintance of mine is married to a member of this band. Not an original member but a later addition.
I went through a similar musical journey in the '80s, from prog-rock (and, in my case, hard rock and metal) to punk and new wave. However, I did actually leave prog and metal behind for a good while, which was a mistake on my part and an over-reaction. I love New Order so much, with "Power, Corruption, and Lies" being my favorite album from them, but I will always love Joy Division even more. If only Ian had lived... I would have loved to see where he and the band would have gone musically and lyrically!
That's really interesting because in the comments of a certain reactor I watch I've seen lots of prog heads shitting on new wave and post punk because it "stays the same" or there's no solo. Just a nice reminder that everyone is different!

@@johnbrookes4892 I agree. I can still hear some of Ian's posthumous influence on the musical/lyrical vision of New Order with the PCAL album. By the time they got to "Technique," though, or even "Brotherhood," to an extent, they were definitely charting a different course then I think he would have taken, if only he had lived longer and made more music with the guys as Joy Division. I do like some of the material on those later NO albums, but I will always wish that Ian had lived and they had continued on as Joy Division.
Great band, formed out of the ashes of Joy Division, after Ian Curtis's tragic suicide. In contrast to Joy Division though New Order specialised in songs that were a combination of post punk, electronica, and dance music. They were one of the first bands to combine that indie rock sound with dance music, that paved the way for later bands like Primal Scream and the whole baggy 'Madchester' scene that evollved in the 90's, (New Order themselves were from Manchester). Their sound was also characterised as well by Peter Hooks driving bass which he played like a lead instrument. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the comments recommend Blue Monday. It's an absolute classic, everything you need to know about New Order in one song. I think it's still the best selling 12" in the UK all these years later.. Other songs I'd recommend are True Faith, Thieves Like Us (which I've always thought sounds like Hot Chocolates Emma, for anyone old enough to remember it), Crystal, and Regret.
I think the Thieves like us hook was acknowledged as coming from Hot Chocolate.

Joy Division ended in the middle of 1980, the day that their singer Ian Curtis died, days before they were going to embark on their first US tour to promote their second (and last) album 'Closer' which hadn't been released yet. But Joy Division are another story.
The 3 remaining members: Bernard Sumner - guitarist, Peter Hook - bassist and Stephen Morris - drums, decided to keep going that same year and formed New Order. Gillian Gilbert also joined the band and became their keyboardist/2nd guitarist.
Both bands are loved and are hugely influential for their own very special reasons.
Bernard Sumner the guitarist very reluctantly became their singer, and interestingly he could not (and still can't) play the guitar and sing at the same time - this definitely impacted the dynamics of their songs, as you can hear in Age of Consent.
In 1981 they recorded and released their first album 'Movement', which was very much like a 3rd Joy Division album in style.
Then in 1983, they released their 2nd album 'Power, Corruption & Lies' which was a huge departure from Joy Division, if only for its more upbeat sound.
The album cover itself was a statement in itself, representing flowers on Ian Curtis' grave - to say goodbye to Ian and to shake off the darkness of their recent past. They were all just 22 and 23 when he died.
This song 'Age of Consent' is also a big statement in its joyousness, even if it's bittersweet-sounding.
The biggest and most important song from this time was 'Blue Monday' which was not included on the album. That song alone was a huge influence on the burgeoning house music scene of the early to mid-80s, and you should check it out. It's still a banger.
New Order were a hugely commercially successful band in the UK, particularly in the late 80s.
You could argue that New Order were even more popular than the Smiths.
I do like 'Power, Corruption & Lies' as an album but none of the other songs sound anything like 'Age of Consent', and in fact they sound less like Joy Division than this song does.

That was great reaction to such a fun song. Power Corruption & Lies will be a great album for you to explore. It was New Orders 2nd album after the death of their lead singer (New Order was originally Joy Division). The first album was terrific in its own right- but was very emotional and not very uplifting as you can imagine. They have recorded many classics and were one of the originators of the underground club scene in the 80's. They, along with their former group Joy Division, are definitely worth checking out.

Takes me back to summer of 83. All the new wave of music were really pouring out of our radios. Here in San Diego, our new station, 91X, were giving us fantastic new jems everyday. It was a very exciting time. Bands were trying so many different things. Synthesizer technology was really hitting it's stride, MIDI was now the standard, and experimentation was the trend. I got Power, Corruption, and Lies when it came out, being a Joy Division fan, and it sounded great in the walkman.
Blue Monday is a definite must hear from New Order! A groundbreaker.

Another great track from the same year is "The Romance of the Telescope" from the album, "Dazzle Ships" by Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark.

This is one of their most beautiful songs. Out of the ashes of Joy Division came New Order. They created some of the best danceable Post Punk tunes of the 80s.

Loved New Order since the start. Peter Hook's melodic bass lines, Bernard Sumner's brooding vocals. You should check out Ceremony and Temptation if you like Age of Consent. Otherwise check out the rest of the catalogue, Blue Monday or Bizarre Love Triangle (The 12 inch mix). So many great songs. Get hold of Substance which is a compilation of their early stuff. Or some of their latter stuff is great too. Great video.

If I may recommended a New Order song it would be Ceremony.
It was actually written by Joy Division and I’ve read it was performed live twice before Curtis’ death and subsequently recorded & released by New Order.
Looking at the lyrics one wonders if they were foreshadowing.
I love Radiohead's version of "Ceremony" sounds more like Ian Curtis than the New order version to me?!
@Michael in NJ Yeah I remember having the Ceremony/In A Lonely place single, good crossover pieces from Joy Division. I felt it was the last songs by JD and the first of NO combined.

The Cure, The Smiths and Joy Division/New Order were some of my favorite bands growing up. You can hear a little Joy Division and New order songs in the first couple episodes of Stranger things. The Joy Division song they play is Atmosphere which I highly recommend you check out

The genre would be New Wave/post-punk (on the door-step to indie).
I actually saw the band in concert a couple of years ago. Their biggest hit clearly is "Blue Monday", but my personal fave is the later and more guitar-driven "Crystal".
Regret was their highest charting single in America. True Faith and Bizarre Love Triangle were big too, of course. Ceremony and Temptation are classics. I like Crystal too, but always think of it as the cousin to Krafty.
I've heard it called '80s new wave, 80s' alternative. This band started from previous members of Joy Division, after the death of their lead singer. I think they considered themselves kind of punk in the 70s'. This whole album is good.

Can I just throw ' The Teardrop Explodes ' out there , have great memories of this short - lived band , in fact the very first gig I attended. Julian Cope was an amazing frontman and had a great following as a solo artist. ' Reward ' what an instant classic from the band.
In Germany all english music, that came after punk, was called New Wave. As a rocker I didn't care so much, it was my Iron Maiden and Rush period. New Order were all over the clubs and radio stations with their biggest hit, Blue Monday, there is a version on youtube with 166 million clicks. Concering the movie "Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo" I can tell you, how much I was shocked, when I saw it. Beeing a "Land-Ei" (Nick, please translate), I knew people, who smoked grass and there were rumours about heroin, but I didn't know anybody, who was addicted. Seeing the movie, playing in Berlin, the 13 year old Christiane starting to try drugs, LSD and Cannabis, later heroin and starting to prostiute herself at the age of 14 at the Berlin West main train station - Bahnhof Zoo - to finance her addiction. Her mother puts her in therapy, but on the first day of seeming to be clean, she starts the drugs again with her boyfriend. When she heard, that her best friend died at the age of 14, she tries to commit suicide. For me living in an "almost perfect" world, this was so frightening, it was beyond my phantasy .... seeing that there's another reality, especially in big cities.

I was 9 in 1983 and I heard this song on a local radio statiion. My mind was tripping. Good music is why I never needed drugs.

The Genre is called Post Punk/New Wave, Another Epic Band from the same period is 'Echo And The Bunnymen', Their first 4 Albums are masterpieces that represent this genre better than anyone. Post Punk/New Wave is almost exclusively a British phenomenon.

"Age of Consent" is a song by New Order. It appears on their 1983 album Power, Corruption & Lies. It is featured in the teaser trailer of the 2006 film Marie Antoinette, and in an affecting karaoke version in the climactic scene of the 2009 film Modern Love is Automatic. The intro is also used in an AT&T wireless commercial. A Howie B remix was produced in 1995 for the (the rest of) New Order compilation album.
The song was supposed to be used in the film Wayne's World 2. However, the movie producers didn't have the money to pay New Order for the track so a cover version using studio musicians was used in place of the real track.
It has also been covered by numerous bands and performers, including Arcade Fire, 311, Buffalo Tom, Grant-Lee Phillips, Kevin Drew, Cienfuegos, Masters of the Hemisphere, Craig Marlowe, Electric Colony, Kii Noo, Neverending White Lights, The Obvious, Buzzcocks, Thursday 29 and Built to Spill.
The song also features in the BBC documentary The Trap.
In 2010, a portion of the song was used in a commercial for Target Corporation.
In 2012, a remixed version appeared as the background music in the announcement video for the iPad Mini.
The song has been played 208 times in concert by the band, making its live debut in 1982. It returned to live performances in 2011, following a 22 year absence from setlists, having last been played live in 1989.

My college years come rushing back while listening to this. Bands that I'd never go see perform, but would hear at dance clubs with the DJ's and light shows and Molly (thats a drug of the time, Ecstasy). Becoming drenched with sweat from dancing for hours as only the young can do, with music like this playing non-stop. So, for me, it fits in that special category that my context built for it; college, dance, clubs, wildness shared with others. And it isn't like the 70's or other periods where the songs are listened to for pleasure. There are other great bands from this period too, as mentioned.
I want to commend your listeners (and those who recommend), again. I am so impressed with their knowledge and requests, New Order (and Joy Division) are not often requested on these channels, and many of the bands and songs listened to here are deep looks at the respective music periods. 80's Indie music 😎 Independent dudes!!!! My favourite song by them ever!!!!! The best time i saw them was at the 1986 Festival of the tenth summer, Manchester GMEX Arena 🥰 Ian Mculloch, lead singer of Echo and the bunnymen came on and sang there first ever song as New Order, Ceremony 🥲🥰🥲 Cmon guys. I recommend the songs 'Regret' and Ruined in a Day' from their 1993 album, Republic, and the song 'Vanishing Point' from 1989's album, Technique. The song 'True Faith', was of course a big hit in 1987.
🤣 You would literally hear 'Boys Don't Cry' or 'Lets Go to Bed' right after this played in a Club. 😏 Usually The Cure we're followed by Echo & The Bunnymen song, 'Jimmy Barnes (Bring on The Dancing Horses)' 🤔 or Duran Duran 'Girls on Film'. 🙄 Dang, that 1 song got me flashing back to Club Playlist DJ days.... 🤯 And I wasn't even a DJ! 😜🐰

at sometimes i really thinks that Americans dont listen music outside of their country. New Order was famous in Malaysia back in early 80s. I remember i had to wait for weeks to get my hands on vinyl since it had to shipped all the way from UK. Same as for A Flock of Seagulls. Literally cheated my dad to get the vinyl. Told him was gonna get geomtery box for class but then went and bought the album. Sweet memories. The genre is called New Wave and came all the way UK underground bands. They mostly use synthesizers in their music which was very unique at that time. Later "The Cars" band from America started doing it as well. The most pioneer New Wave band is Orchestral Manueveres in the Dark (OMD). All their songs are amazing.
It's emo post-punk techno shoe gaze synth trance. Peter Hook is so fucking cool he doesn't even look at his hands when he plays.
New Order uses just an enormous amount of layered synths and bass and just super tight and controlled drums either real or digital.
New Order has a very specific sound that can peg immediately. That sound is uniquely them.The Cure did it as well. You could choose a song snippet at random and be absolutely 100% sure that that is New Order. Sui generis.

Love New Order! Their compilation Substance is a must listen. The first disc at least, not necessarily the B sides on the second disc.
There are some good stuff on the B side disc too such as the iconic 1963, for me one of New Orders beat and really should have been an A side in its own right

So good you have found them ! Nice, early song, but they have developed enormously after that, complete autodidacts without any musical education,starrting with Punk,they just did iit,that's what makes them iconic like Joy Division before. Many masterpieces like The Perfect Kiss (Celebrated video) Sunrise, Angel Dust, Vanishing Point, Dream Attack, Regret, Chemical, Crystal, Turn my way, Primitive notion , World and Blue Monday. They came from Post-Punk, New wave going to Electropop, they already even had Techno Elements before it was invented. Pioneers, very influental. And they had that bitter sweetness like The Smiths and The Cure, just more dancable .

This was the New Wave and Synthie Pop Era of the 80s. As a Hard Rock and Prog Rock Fan not my era, but New Order and The Cure were great IMO. New Orders iconic "Blue Monday" was for many years a Disco Classic.🇩🇪

@@rudolfbecker4313 I looked that up and found it is a 2021 movie - but it lists that it is a remake of the 1981 movie “Christiane F” which has the Bowie Soundtrack.

The rabbit hole that is Power Corruption and Lies. My fave-Your Silent Face, 586...New Wave, in hindsight now Post Punk/Synth Pop. I grew up on the Beatles and Zep, yet new Order is my fave band. You wanna list, just ask me ; )

I was the biggest New Order fan in the 80's and even got to see them live. You should try dropping acid and listening to their music until the sun comes up....I've never done that of course lol

The 1980s! The genre would have been electronic.. I remember right out of high school in to college going to the bars and clubs on the weekends and dancing till 2 or 3 in the morning with this music..
The Smiths and New Order are from Manchester UK, it was very dark and forgotten by the Government. It is the wettest area of UK. The Happy Mondays and Joy Division also came from there.
Try listening to Kinky Afro by The Happy Mondays. Or Bye Bye Bad man by The Stone Roses.

New Order was born from the Ashes of Joy Division. And they really started to experiment with electronics and was the band who could really basically blend Rock and Techno in one. Kudos I still have this CD (one of the first ones that came in that format back in 1989).
The genre you’re trying to describe is post-punk (the cure, new order, the smiths, etc). Sometimes would crossover with mainstream new wave, sometimes not. New Order had a few big dance hits from the era, but in general they were bigger in the UK.
What would have been cool is both of them got dressed in 80’s clothes and danced to the song.
At their conception, after the end of Joy Division, they were very mysterious, private band they very rarely gave interviews. But much as changed in the last 30 years, founding bassist exstroidinare Peter Hook left the band around 2008, and is Peter Hook& the light. They only had 4 studio albums in the '80's, they were a band that combined dance, electronica, rock, just a superb group.
Right on, they are a British band. New Wave or Alternative is what we called it in the 80’s. Earlier New Order sounds like their previous monaker’s output Joy Division. As the albums moved through the 80’s it morphed closer to New Wave and to Synthpop. They were one of the Pioneers of Synthpop / dance movement like Depeche Mode, OMD, Erasure, YAZOO

Oh gosh. Please do Bizarre Love Triangle and Blue Monday. I take New Order for granted, I’ve pretty much been listening to them out of the womb so seeing people listen for the first time brings me so much joy. New Order is one of THE most influential bands out of the 80. God bless Manchester.

In my book New Order was always thought to be a New Wave band. Came in the early 80's along with the likes of Gary Newman, The Cars, Iggy Pop...etc. David Bowie was in the middle of creating what's become known as the Berlin Trilogy working with Iggy Pop and Brian Eno and you can hear alot of this on those 3 albums.
