When I was receiving radiation treatments, for a tumor in my head, I was allowed to listen to music (the hospital provided a player for an ipod). The treatment usually lasted about 30 minutes. For the 4th treatment, I only picked one song. The nurses were like, "Don't you want more than one song?" I said nope, that this one would be enough. So, they started the song just before they left the room. When the treatment was done, and they came back in, the song was just finishing. They were like, "One song was enough." I said, "Echoes is always just enough!" RIP Richard! You make this song what it is.

Being so brilliant as a pianist, at keyboards and the Vocoder, most people, as well as I, didn't really notice Richard Wright's playing in Pink Floyd's music, because he really was just that good! His playing simply melded so well with the rest of the music! Pink Floyd's music would not have sounded the way it did without the late Richard Wright! We will never again have the pleasure of being able to enjoy such a multi-faceted musician as Richard Wright really was! I was fortuitous enough to see Pink Floyd's "The Division Bell" concert, with Richard Wright, at the former Minneapolis Metrodome back in 1994! Howah! Miigwetch, Floyd "Buck" Jourdain!

As much as I love Pink Floyd and as much as Echoes is one of my favourite songs in general, this comment shows the general ignorance of ppl who legitemately believe in the superiority of "music from the good old days". While I agree on the fact that much of the pop and hip-hop music nowadays is pretty bad, discrediting entire centuries of amazing musicians like Kanye, Lorde, Frank Ocean and Kendrick is just as bad as having a bad taste in music. But even if you leave out the mainstream, 71s Floyd wasnt mainstream, why not compare them to musicians from similar genres. Take bands like Radiohead for example. Is the first ping of Echoes better than the entire Radiohead discography? Hell no. Or take GY!BE. If there is an argument for the track Storm being a better 20 minute epic than Echoes, it will by far surpass the first note of it. Another example might be the entire top end of the experimental hip-hop scene: artists like Death Grips, Danny Brown, JPEGMAFIA, Earl Sweatshirt may not be as great as Floyd for sure. But why bring such an ignorant statement when you probably dont even know most of this artists? Most of the mainstream is bad nowadays, and was also bad in the 70s.
No, I am not a music snop, even if the artists mentioned here make me look like one:) I just generally love music and have listen to a bunch of stuff despite my quite young age. Sorry for this wall of text but I cant leave such statements uncommented...

They were truly greater than the sum of their parts. Just seeing Rick totally owning that keyboard was so very bittersweet - only when someone is gone do you really notice just how much you miss them and how big an impact they made on so many people. A true masterpiece , an epic , I believe this song is a timeline of some sort. The pings in the beginning represent the universe coming into existence, and the first verse refers to the first organisms on Earth.... everything was "green and submarine", peaceful, it was enough, but something drove some of those organisms to seek a new life on land, something drove them to journey into the unknown. Perhaps by complete coincidence, two of these early humans see each other and recognize themselves. They are the same, or the same species rather - "I am you and what I see is me". These two specific cavemen go on to try and cooperate for protection, hunting, shelter, etc. They work together. The following guitar solo documents the evolution of man, and all his accomplishments and follies. The groovy part right after that reflects modern society, and how its kinda fast-paced, stressful, and there's a lot of sleaze that comes with civilization. In the haunting, graveyard portion that follows, I think it singles out one man in this society, a very depressed man for whatever reason. He feels he's trudging through life, and its a living hell for him. However, he soon somehow feels he's breaking out of that hell...... maybe its a dream, or his life is turning around, something of that sort.... he feels he's ascending towards heaven and escaping from everything that has ruined his life. But just when he's on the brink, he "wakes up" (the last verse) and reality dawns on him. He quickly falls back to where he once was. He is alone. But something inside him, just like what drove the first organisms to leave the ocean and what drove the those species to work together, drives him to continue trudging through life, in hope that he will find someone or something to live for soon (and so I throw the windows wide and call to you across the sky. That interpretation might clear out questions that're running out in circles in my mind , love this epic

Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves in labyrinths of coral caves
The echo of a distant tide
    Comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine
And no one showed us to the land
And no one knows the wheres or whys
But something stirs and something tries
And starts to climb towards the light
    Strangers passing in the street
By chance two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand the best I can
And no one calls us to move on
And no one forces down our eyes
    No one speaks
    And no one tries
No one flies around the sun
Cloudless every day you fall upon my waking eyes
Inviting and inciting me to rise
And through the window in the wall
Come streaming in on sunlight wings
A million bright ambassadors of morning
And no one sings me lullabies
And no one makes me close my eyes
So I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky.
