I think a very basic thing which is missing for most Indians is that before the tool of thinking is developed by an individual, a template to set their beliefs and virtues is given to them through sitcoms, tv series, movies , local culture, etc. Black and white thinking originates from there.
Global cultures give the individual a false sense of belongingness, which they keep un upgrading as it keeps on flowing more and more. The individual doesn't get the peaceful time to stop and think, that hey, why am I doing this exactly?

I agree with the conclusion. Many Indians are trying to preserve the Indian culture but their idea of "Indian Culture" is either from the time of Mughal/Sultan oppression or from British oppression period. We should preserve our original culture which tbh was quite open, respectful towards others and celebrated critical thinking.

    • @GangstaPerspectives

You have been taught by continuous media (unintended) training that both words are synonymous. The media is not run by enlightened thinking people, it's people like us, who follow and repeat whatever they had learned.
The fact that we even believe that modern is western is a big win for the west in terms of soft power. Because it means the only way to be modern is to become western (what a neat trick).
South Korea, Japan, India, even China are very modern. Indians may be behind the first two nations but becoming "western" does not mean modern.
Modern is separate. Western is separate. One can be achieved without the other. Is the west modern? Yes. Is modernism being west? NO.
What is modern? Being current with the needs of time in terms of human freedom to live, thrive, and consume. One can be collectivist and modern. One can be individualist and modern. One can be part collectivist part individualist and modern too.

Westernisation is basically following the western culture influenced by the west's approach of things for example If one wears a suit and blazer and walk around he might be considered as a educated and highly paid guy in front of the crowd, here in India, but If I wear a Kurta and a Dhoti and wear chappals and walk around in which I feel comfortable people will think I'm uneducated and not modern even though I might be more than educated than the Suit guy even without knowing my modern thoughts and ideas in the society. Modernity is accepting modern values, thoughts, current trends and ideas without hampering our culture in the indic society

Modern age, is about using reason over myth. Using rationality over blind faith. Modernity is about improving your culture, attitude, behaviour to ensure you take more logical decisions.
Westernisation is imitation of west, accepting their value directions. All your fads, most of them, are westernisation. There is hardly any internal evaluation & progress linked to it. Like a person who has luxurious lifestyle, owns sedans, has Apple Watch, but still believes in dowry system, or justifies misogyny, is he modern?

I like shwetabh's excitement on clubbing india with "asian culture".. But educated urbanites, who matter are far from traditional indians. We are effectively an extension of american imperialism in cultural sphere. Ex being on this new fad of pronouns, we have been quicker to adopt this American zeitgeist than even continental europeans say French or italians. Our skin is brown but we(the urban elites) are more american than serbians or croats or mexicans. Religion is slowly receding from public life, used only as tool of identity assertion rather than spiritual fulfillment, regarded as instrument of oppression. Result being a generation of megalomaniac narcissistic psychopaths who cry at smallest of dissatisfaction. We are geographically Asian but please don't club us with China or japan. A china type Internet firewall is only way if we want to save what's left of indian culture.

How many schools these days teach us that? Maybe few started recently but no one did it before 10 years ago or since independence. Another reason is teaching inaccurate history.

We, as humans, follow/copy the ones who seem more successful than others. And, we will agree that the Americans are the most successful currently, at least in terms of materialism. So, it is natural to copy the Americans in the current situation where in spite of the so called 'the great ancient Indian knowledge' that we had, we could not save India's ancient greatness and glory from some invaders. This makes us Indians feel small wrt ourselves and we don't feel that proud anymore. On top of that, there is so much mess in the name of 'Indian culture' like the sexual oppression talked about in the video, that it doesn't feel like we would want to be a part of all this. I think that instead of thinking in terms of trying to restore former Indian glory, we should do work according to the current situations to make the contemporary India glorious instead of trying to restore the India that existed thousands of years ago because no one can relate to that India anymore. Let's use our intelligence and make that happen not read some obsolete texts and try to implement them in the contemporary India because that will add to the mess already existing and confuse us further.

I have several arguments that prove that ancient India was a lot more open regarding sexuality before foreign invasions and foreign influences in our culture
    * In the book Breaking India by Rajeev Malhotra it is written that, When Thomas Babingnton Macaulay came to India for first time. He wrote to The Empire that Indians are too liberal.
    * The Kamasutra ( self explanatory)
    * There used be a game named "ghat kanchuki" in which equal number adults from both sexes participated at night, where the women would take off their cholis and put them in a matka. The men then picked cholis from the container and whosoever's clothing they ended up with, would be their partner for the night (no matter the caste or relationship status).
So , I don't really think that the idea of being open to opposite sex is a foreign idea.

What is ur thoughts on Jordan Peterson's Daughter? She is doing the very thing, her father do not support. She was posting stories looking for babysitter online, so that she can go party as a single working mom.

Yeah, that too is very against the essence of Indian culture
Our culture is collectivist and socialist
Show off thing is a kind of insecurity

This has started from weddings of Kings in India. They used to do marriage in a grand manner. Locals didn't have that privilege. Nowadays it has become so prevalent. It is a status symbol sadly. People need to think about this. When one family doesn't have that much privilege then marriage shouldn't be too extravagant and done in constrained manner. People need to understand marriage as an event isn't the most imp thing, the life after it is more imp.
