Ok from what I’ve gathered this is what Italians want to see 1. A moka with 150k miles on it 2. Room temperature or cold water 3. Carelessly throw as much grounds as you can into the basket without leveling or tapping or anything 4. Screw on top 5. Close lid until it’s done
Looks good overall, but try removing from the heat earlier, even before the first spouting of water. Results in a much more rich drink. If you want to make an americano out of it, you can still add boiling water afterwards into the cup.
A tip is to try and reach just about the point where the crease to pour it out of starts or at tad above in case if this 1 cup version (not at the top but at the bottom). You can immediately cool it down and stop the brewing by holding the bottom part under cold water to reach that perfect level
This was one of my first brews using a moka pot. I did realize I was doing it wrong waiting for all the water to spew out before removing it from heat. Doing it the same way you mentioned, improved the taste of this Yemeni coffee I used in this brew.
Just bought a 2006 (?) Bialetti Mukka in almost new condition for $35 off FB. It works differently. It has an internal valve that builds up pressure and suddenly EXPLODES thru the coffee grounds!! It makes a really strong, good shot.
The valve on the side is a safety measure if all else fails, you should never ever fill the bottom chamber up such that the valve is covered unless you want a coffee bomb
@@grassytramtracks The Mukka is unique. In addition to the safety valve, it has an internal valve that allows pressure to build and then suddenly releases it thru the grounds. Then it keeps steaming to foam the milk... It makes cappuccino, it is unlike any other moka pot.
For people who think it looks like a tea, look at the beans and the grinds, it is a light roast. It supposed to brew with drippers, not as base like espresso.

This is how I make coffee in the Moka Pot. Hot water should be poured if it is a light roast, and room temperature water if it is a medium or dark roast. Pour to the valve. Pour a full basket in any case. The grind is medium fine. Cook on low heat, if it flows too quickly, it is better to reduce the gas a little, and remove it when lighter coffee flows. you can use aeropress filters, they're often the perfect size for the smaller moka pots. 1, 3 and 6. they're a great way to get faux crema and no sediments in the top
Sure why you’re pouring hot water in the water boiler. Now you have to GRAB a towel. The myth that using hot water makes it not bitter is false. I use cool or cold water just fine with no bitterness. Use less water for dark roast coffee.
While I haven’t tried using cold water. I would bet that I won’t be able to point out how much of a difference it will make to the taste. But mine as of now is more of just a matter of work flow. I do need to boil up water because I mainly drink mine diluted(aka. americano). I do this first before anything else so that it will have time to cool down a bit before I pour it in my cup. I can also imagine brewing time would be a lot shorter especially on bigger moka pots given that the water in the chamber is already hot.
It does help filter finer coffee grounds that would otherwise end up in your cup if you didn’t use one. But it wouldn’t be a problem if you are fine having it in your cup OR just let is sit at the bottom of your cup and not drink to the last drip.
