For £800 I wouldn’t bother selling, just see if it passes the MOT and enjoy some cheap motoring! I like the Sweden road trip idea!
New tyres will make the world of difference. It changes the way it feels when you drive it having had a Volvo. As a viewer there is a lot of content you could do to keep us engaged and entertained.
I loved my XC90. It was a 2009 so had the 185bhp but it was enough. Definitely the most comfortable car I’ve owned and tbh even though I swapped it for an L322 I miss it. Stick it in for an mot and if it’s not going to cost a fortune to get through you should keep it
Fix the problems, give it a service and see what it needs for the MoT. My XC90 only needed a track rod end to pass this year's MoT with an advisory on the front tyres.
Don't slag off the Euro3 Volvo D5 engine, It's one of the best Diesel engines out there with sensible preventative maintenance, Do a transmission flush, Aisin warner gearboxes are ticking timebombs as Volvo state they are sealed for life, They are not! Early signs of autobox failure on these is thumping into gear, Check the timing belt and put a full front engine auxiliary drive belt kit on it as the aux belt can fail and get dragged up the timing cover resulting in a smashed up engine, Other than that the Euro3 D5 motor is a beast. I've got a Euro3 V70 D5 manual on 242K miles and all the FEAD components were shagged out, An INA (Volvo OEM) timing belt kit and INA FEAD kit cost me £170, I did the labour myself as i am a retired vehicle tech. 53MPG on a run, It sips diesel for a 5 pot 2.4 litre engine! Sounds great for a diesel as well and thrives on revs! Total piece of mind with my D5 now! i plan on driving it to the Volvo museum in Sweden and i bet it gets me there and back.
Keep it Joel, spend some money. Get it through MOT and then a beautiful trip to Sweden 😊.
My vote is to keep it! I would love one but never had one, I made do with a 20yr old V50, but definitely go for the MOT and then decide.
Think this has the makings of a great series. Nobody on CZcams has one of these but Range Rovers have been done to death. Get it to the MOt station and see what needs dong. Got to be worth it for a years motoring.
There's quite a bit of XC90 content. I've done 32 videos on my own XC90 so far. Sirobb is another one who has XC90 content. WatchJRGo had an XC90 on his channel too. You're right about Rangies being done to the death.
Hi Joel
Take it north !
Would be great to see it brought back to life love to see that, did something similar to the old estate Volvo years back it never let me down.
Keep it and enjoy
Im loving these videos on the volvo i have a real soft spot in my heart for volvos and saabs witch I would also really enjoy seeing on your channel keep the amazing content coming joel
I have gotten a 11 plate xc90 a couple of months ago, same trim executive model. The engine is mine is 200bhp I think they recognised the early ones were a bit underpowered. I think 200bhp does feel decent on the acceleration. I really got into mine after a few weeks. Took it to France and back, definitely confirm this is first and foremost a motorway cruiser! Awesome vid. Keep the car, mine is only 70k miles so a fair bit away from 300 but I can see myself getting there maybe!!! It’s a tank of a car.
What you need to do is option 2....for sure. Its worth the MOT fee, at least. 👍
I don’t really know about CZcams money but if the financials make sense, I think this would make a popular series. I’m on my second first gen XC90 and makes a great family car, chuck everything in the boot!! Just did a 400 mile round trip to Devon from London and no issues at all, yes is a bit laggy but the comfort makes up for it, for me at least! My current dilemma is living just outside the new ULEZ zone, I don’t want to spend £15k+ on a new motor yet when mine has a good few years of life left in it!!! Will wait and see how much I end up spending in ULEZ fees after going into the zone 1-2 times per week.
Have had 4 XC90’s do check these things:
1. trailer hitch, if you going to pull caravan car trailer heavy stuff, mount an external oil cooler for the automatic gearbox. D5 «does not» have thst alternative, but V8 oil cooler do fit the D5. Change the tramsmission oil every 60kkm.
2. Change oil om the haldex, and clean the mesh screen. Do also open Th electric pump motor, and clean it for coalbrush dust inside
3. Check the power steering oil, and most lightly change it.
4. Change the break fluid
5. Change oil quite ofthent due to a bit to small passages on the piston oil return ring. Thay gum up if you alway extend the oil changes..
1 to 4 is important because these need service, and it is only reccomended in service intervall, and therfor ofthen not mention or accepted by earlier owners. If these 1-4 points is not done, the transmission fails, haldex break, break calipers seases and power steering pump breaks down, all very expensive repairs that can be avoid and cheap to avoid by just doing these fluid changes.
Undercarrige is a bit underdimensioned. I thin most of the S80 parts is reused for the XC90 and by that be carfull driving over curbes and holes in road etc. This is not a «UNICEF tractor» check the wheel alligments somhow ofthent to avoid tyre wear and extra fuel cost.
The air intakte must be cleaned for al the unburned exhaust from ERG valve. If the air intakte is full of carbon sediments, the car will get a weaker and notiseable «hard» dieselnoise when full trottle.
I love XC90’s and the one i have not is a 2006 T5 turbopetrol. Use a little more fuel, but does not have the particle filter, ERG or clogged air intakte and very saldom turbofailures due to no carbon gritt and lumps of deposits from dirty air intake hitting the turbo that spinns with meny thousand rpms.
The V8 come with upgraded haldex in 2005. All other followed with this upgraded haldex in 2006. In 2006 the D5 was upgraded to 185bhp. This upgraded haldex has a more permanent AWD ser up due to allways have 5 or 10% of propulsion is on the rear axel. The haldex is very quick to provide more power to the rear axel if there allready is a oil pressure. Its better for tyrewear also. The upgrade come out of absolutte demands if the landlover freelander was to use haldex. The freelander should manage to start on loose beach sand without wheelspin from front axel. One demand was the freelander should manage to pull a boat trailer on the beach also.
Enjoyd your video🤩 Greetings from Oslo Norway
Previous mot history shows that there is play in inner steering joints....easy to replace and literally screw off and screw on....that would help along with a decent set of tyres and four wheel alignment....also remap to gain a bit of extra power, ....its no sports car, and was never designed to be one, theres very little modern cars of equivalent spec that will make 300k miles
Another great episode. Id like to see you keep this for a bit if it passes its MOT. A drive to Sweden would make a great episode!
Definitely keep it. Maybe some challenges first then sell on in a few months after some fun with it
The engine is the best thing about it! That 5 cylinder growl is awesome... 👀👍
I would keep it, I bet you can do some of the repairs at home like redoing the headliner. There are a ton of tutorials online!
Those early XC90s made 163bhp and it’s also 5 cylinder so it sounds absolutely amazing!!
Had an xc90 for 2 years. Best seats I’ve ever had in a car
Hi Joel, great video. I would see what it needs for an MOT pass (without robbing a high street bank if you can find one!), then organise a road trip to Sweden as you suggested. It would pay homage then sell after a year :)
Bring it back to life and road trip!
probably noisy before because it hadnt been driven for a while, D5 is a great engine, great mileage and torque for towing with, i also have a D5 but the C70 and the gearbox is really smooth, i also agree when you talked about the gearbox for life thing and servicing it would possibly cause issues if you havent been having issues before. the multimedia issue is possibly a break in the fibrecable system which actually would be a total nightmare to sortout, and probably not worth the cost (seriously the satnav would be out dated anyway, just enjoy the car as a cheap motor, see what the MOT issues are before putting anything into it.
I hope you decide to keep the Volvo - because it will make really interesting content on your channel. I would love to see you give this car a new lease of life.
Volvo’s can go on indefinitely, unlike many other cars. You may grow to love its quirkiness.
We still have ours! 2009 160,000 miles and still going strong! Great family cars. 👍🏻
Cant beat a volvo
As others have said Joel, put it through the MOT and see what it needs. ABS is likely a sensor, brake disks may be an advisory, mirror will need taping back up (else it will fail on sharp edges) or remove the plastic bit. Got to be worth a punt.
I love a 5 pot. It may be slow and noisy but as far as diesels go I think it sounds quite nice
And with it being slow and continuing the comparison to a Range Rover, the 3.0 td6 is marginally quicker than this early engine and a bit slower than the later 200hp D5.
With the instrument cluster I love Volvos R design cluster as it’s the same unfussy design but in a fantastic metallic deep blue. And I think interns of keeping it or not, do what I said in an earlier comment about what we want you to buy. Try to get your hands on a S80 preferably V8 because they’re rare quite quick and make a fabulous noise as the unit is famously shared with the noble m600
Keep it! Had one for years and I'm absolutely gutted to have sold it.
Keep it. Though not an xc90, I had a v70 d3 with 274,000 MLS. Never missed a beat. Only let go due to clean air zone but do know it passed yet another mot at 300,000, so new owner must be happy with it.
Don't get rid of it, go cheap Chinese aftermarket head unit and get some connectivity with that, go down the remap route, with 307k that's maybe risky but I'm sure there's a video or two there lol
New set of boots and tracking done will make a huge difference, also for good content how about getting it remapped ? Be great to see what a 300000 engine has lost , power wise and what you could get back with a remap . I await with baited breath for the next instalment. Thanks Joel
The D5 is a great engine. 163 bhp is the most reliable, though a bit blunted in the XC90.
There can be a number of causes of lacking performance - timing could be out, a turbo boost leak (worst case a new intercooler at about £100 plus fitting, best case turbo resonator seals - £15 fix).
307,000 miles is nothing for these.
Agree that the D5 is the most popular motor for the XC90 due to better fuel milage and more torq, but the T5 is the most reliable, with less transmission failures and allmost never turbo breakdowns and non existing ERG valve keeps the air intake nice and clean. T5 has more top power 209bhp, but lower torq. 320nm compare with 360nm (i guess 163bho D5 have, the 185 D5 has 400nm). Chip tuning should not be done without having external oilcooler for the transmission.
To re- activate sat nav... eject disk from sat nav disk reader (located under passenger seat) then disconnect car battery in boot after 12 or so minutes reconnect battery, start engine, and re-install sat nav disc, then press any of the satnav buttons on the steering wheel and it will fire up perfectly. No need to recalibrate.
To see if you have DTC's in car press and hold button on left steering wheel stalk while at the same time press the rear fog light twice. then toggle through the info that appears on the dash info display (left side of cluster), any other questions drop me a line.
I loved my XC90 geartronic. They respond well to chipping to release the power
Thanks for another video on the XC90 .
Have a look at the Amp unit under the driver's seat. It has a power feed and fiber optics (orange cables) which could cause problems with the juke box if damaged or wet
The going to Sweden ideea seems good :D Repair what makes sense to repair and take it home.
8.08 the pulsing through the steering wheel that you describe is a really common issue across V70s, XC70s and XC90s of this era. My 2004 V70 does it and it's off-putting but it doesn't get worse over time. I believe a faulty seal in the rack is the culprit. You could replace or re-condition the rack if you wanted to but that's a big outlay on a car like this.
The abs light will probably be the pick up ring at the back of the hub they're really common for swelling and cracking. Amazings cars but can be very expensive when they go wrong 😅
100% - same issue on the C70 of the same issue. Pennies to fix if you can DIY.
I actually like the sound of the 5 cylinder diesel on these although I know a lot of people don't. I'd like to see it on the channel as a project, would be a shame to let it go now.
9:06noisy D5 hard dieselnoise can be caused clogged air intake. Hard, weaker and noisy is symptoms for a well clogged and air resticted airintake manifoil. Most of older D5 have pretty cerbon clogged airinteake build over the years caused by the ERG valve returning unburned dirty exhaust every each time you let off the speed pedal.
Great Video Joel!
Nice vid, Joel. Have you checked the fuses re the infotainment?
Joel I'd honestly say since it's a diesel, you can get boatloads of power from an ECU remap. Look into that route before making a decision!
Engine mounts look like they need changing from the engine shots. Not unusual on the D5 engine. May also affect the handling curiosity you mention.
Lovely car though.
eBay sells good used parts including a radio and whatever accessories you would most likely need
I recently purchased the same - early xc90 2.4d 163 hp. I drive a lot long distances. I feel exactly the same - conflicted. It's like good, but not at the same time. What I have landed on - drive it into the ground, with minimum maintenance. I personally just dont want to switch cars now and winter is coming(we have heavy winters here).
It is comfy cruiser, but ONLY up to 60-65mph. And pretty OK in the city while moving(parking is paain tho). But I am low key sad that I didn't get X5 3.0d at the end of the day.
You’d probably be happy with a XC60 1st gen or a 2016+ XC90. But this generation… is really weird.
@@itsme4026 not sure, xc60 is ugly af. The XC90 2016+ doesnt really fit as a cheap runabout car.
I'd sell it and put the money towards another L322 with the V8 petrol engine, ive just picked up a really nice 2004 in Epson green with tan interior in mint conditon. Put 2000 miles on it in a month and loving it! That XC90 doesnt come close the look and feel of the L322, cheap and nasty inside. Look to spend between 4000 and 5000 and get a good one.
Keep it as a runaround and just spend on essentials. Good review. 👍👍👍👍
Its got to be worth running it around for a week or two and putting it in for an MOT, see what happens and go from there?
The steering feel sounds to me like it desperately requires a fluid flush. It's to regular ATF/PAS fluid. It's green Central Hydraulic fluid you'll be needing. It's a green hue and brighter the better when you flush it.
I have never driven an XC90 but I've sat in one and thet wierd driving position of the car squatting down was immediately noticeable I'd say first port of call would be an mot and then you can see if its worth your time
There is something about an old barge like this - I’d totally go about getting a new mot on it if it didn’t need too much spending. I’ve just bought an 07 Land Rover freelander 2 as a 2nd car to keep the miles off my M2. I’ve gotta say it’s already under my skin and genuinely love it. I really do get excited driving it over the fancy bmw on the driveway 😂
Volvo designs many of their engines such that acceleration in the higher gears is better than at lower gears - for safer overtaking on the motorways. So overtaking on a motorway would be faster in a Volvo than most car brands that one would think would have been faster.
Great video and fab to hear the range rover comparisons. Next time, can you consider a Citroën DS, old Volvo 850 R AWD or a Ford Sierra Cosworth or a Merc 190E 2.3 please. Very enjoyable content. Keep it up. 😊
I owned an 850 R, but I don't think there has been an AWD version of it..
Agree with others, keep it, get all the bits working and do road trip to Swedish factory 😊
It needs to go on anroad trip with a fellow 300k miler like my 330d on 311,000 miles
I totally get that ‘downhill’ feeling. I get it in Vans and my VW Passat. Weird!
Keep it, I’ve had a similar debate with my 2012 model which is now on 126,000. Lost a bucket in value since buying it due to mileage I do. Had all the major bits done and I’ve got a strange connection to it. Imagine how much a 300k Range Rover would have cost to keep it going . Sweden is a great plan
i would wait til the MOT then decide what to do next, maybe keep it for a year, i like that version of the XC90 than the new ones, the new XC60 not bad though
Do the MOT Joel,it will be interesting content 👍
I would change the tyres and get the tracking done 1st of all ..could make all the difference
You can get the plastic headlight lenses from china i did that with our xc90 headlights look like new again
Keep it,,show us more of the Volvo,,, take it on a trip to Sweden,,,
It's a shame you haven't fallen in love with it after the deep clean
Drive it to Sweden and back - then you'll know whether you want to keep it or get another Rangie.
Of course the Range Rover is bigger in every direction than the XC90 so it is interesting you feel it is long...
Remap the old girl!!!!! “ 300,000 mile Volvo remap” 🙌🏻🤣
Come on Joel - the answers simple - you need another l322 in your life!
That D5 engine needs some TLC, odds on the swirl flaps are crème crackered. My S60 was similar performed like a donkey no boost when you put your foot down, the choice I was given repair the swirl flaps or disable them, I chose repair and it immediately turned my donkey into a nippy motor ( relatively speaking) But the question is Volvo or not on 300k, is it worth spending the money on it for me as a Volvo owner of 3 yrs and I love them it’s a no !
I'm positive note if you were to fix everything you could sell it for profit because you got such a good deal on it
So has it got an MOT yet?
Did you mention the dropped headlining very expensive to replace 🤷♂
This is a tough one . Putting money in this old nail lol. 🤔😉
Your last few videos you’ve tempted me to use copart but then I can’t believe they charge £100 for a years “membership”
Anything that moves under its own power for less than a grand is a win in car world.
Yep…….you’re correct……It’s not a Range Rover! If it was a Range Rover……..it would be knackered and had £307,000 spent on it. I have a 2008 V50 2.4D with 235,000 on the clock. It’s my workhorse and has been super reliable.
We had one for 10 years from new doing about 115,000 miles in it. Once you get into them you really like them. Check to see if the awd is working (the spline on the transfer box is a common failure and the car become FWD). The turbos have a few issues as well, but nothing serious. The one thing to change is the auxilliary belt - if it fails it will destroy the engine(!)
Get it perfect Joel 😊
Quirks and features oh no man🤣🤣🤣👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🚘
The driving position is caused by the low dash level presumably for optimised forward vision. MOT it! Be interesting to see what it needs after 300k miles and a lot of neglect - I’ll bet it’s virtually nothing - it’ll get under your skin that old car…you wait.
Get rid as soon as you can. Its a money pit. Best thing is to drop it off at the breakers yard.
Thanks for posting
I think fixing this would give you great content and satisfaction in fixing it
Is it the executive model?
One word....remap!! 😂
Yeah, you need to sell it mate, you won't make any loss seeing how much life it still has in it.
Take it for the MOT and decide after that what to do next
@6:44 Doesn't it have enough lowend torque as a turbo Diesel to get going, which means you have enough horsepower where it counts?
@12:56 It is adequately powered without the automatic transmission, it seems. The torque converter reduces the power output. 🤷♂
@16:53 300,000 miles is really not unusual mileage for a turbo Diesel.
@17:46 You could engine swap this thing and turn it into a project, fix it as is or sell it on? 🤔
Wingrave?
Keep it And restore it 😊
Another good video 🚘🚙🚗👏👏👏👏⭐️⭐️⭐️👍👍👍👍
Take it on a long trip
I’d put up with it 😂👍👍
Keep it and roadtrip it. Much more interesting than a rattly rangie.
Joel, this one wont be financially viable, but the video content will be great and perhaps some of us subscribers can help, chip in and make the project less painful. Give it a go, you could end up with a unicorn XC90.
Totally worth thousand to fix
Hi Joel, I have only recently started watching your vids in the last few months. Loved the Audi TT. Excellent bang for buck. And I saw your genuine enjoyment of that car. But as soon as I saw the XC90 I thought what a complete bag of S**T. The money you'd need to spend to get it half decent would be 1000's. Cosmetically its awful. Me personally I would cut your losses and get rid. Keep up the great vids.
