A wet t shirt could be of immense help in a burning boat. But ofc they had to remove them.

I get what you are saying but actually, taking the shirt off would really be the right move if its wet. For the first few moments it will be cool, then when the water in the shirt starts to heat up the steam will start to burn you. Warm/Hot air is less likely to burn you than hot and wet air. Take a sauna for instance: 90° are typically dry.. just so you dont get boiled alive.
Firemen (at least here in germany, I guess other contries train for this as well) try to keep there ppe dry as long as possible just so that when they have to enter a burning room dont burn themselves from the water in their clothes boiling off.
Everything of that aside: Of course they had to take of the shirt. *smirk*
