The industry is HARD AS HELL to break into, I’ve wanted to be a tattoo artist for over 20 years, in the past 2 years I started putting together a portfolio and showed it to the 2 shops that are in the area I live, notice I said 2 shops, I had the same response from both, you’re a bit to old for this, I’m 44, and I got lucky because a friend of mine moved back home and opened a new studio, so at 44 I’m starting an apprenticeship, just to prove the haters wrong, keep at it guys

There's no age limit. I'm glad you've finally got an apprenticeship. Good luck with it all!

Well done, correct you're never to old to follow your dream. I don't know why the industry is so clicky and secretive, it's just a job at the end of the day, not some rock star ego trip like some seem to think it is or some secret art right of passage bullshit.
When I first started I got the same response, I went to several studios, some old school types and some younger, all weren't too keen.
It is fair to say that tattoo studios should encourage apprenticeships because they are the first to complain when people resort to doing it in their houses.
Anyhow I taught myself which was the long hard road, i'd have been tattooing quicker and better had i had that opportunity in the first place, but it didn't stop me.

Haters gonna hate bro! I don’t get why people hate on people for teaching the correct way to tattoo. People are going to tattoo, apprenticeship or not so they might as well learn to do it right!

Hey, just wanted to say your videos are really helpful. I've had machines for 3 years now and have only just got the confidence to go it alone after doing a two week crash course and going on to managing a studio. It is really hard but being a nice humble person has got me really great responses and people offering to help me build up a portfolio. My works not great yet and I'm very self critical but I'm upfront that although my hygiene and safety is on point I don't have years of experience on skin. Your videos are great and find they hit the nail right on the head when tackling different known problems. For example the green paint video, I had that exact issue with green ink on my leg, your video was a God send. Screw the haters carry on teaching us please 😀

That is soo true! I just started tattooing on my own, because I've been talking to some of the artists about giving me advice or to like guide me to tattooing to get some self-confidence. And they just told me that don't even start cause there is so many bad tattoos out there and we don't want to cover them up.. 😁 although it's true, I'd say that if you're confident about what you're doing and have done your learning about every single thing about the process and practiced it with the machine aswell and your customer tells you that I want a tattoo from you, then just give it a go.. You can only become a master if you are motivated enough and train alot! Thank you so much for all of your advice, I've learned so much from your videos! Great artwork that you've done and nice to see that there are really some people who care about others👌

It’s sad because I have been an artist for as long as I can remember! I first started drawing toys I’d like to have them Batman then I was inspired by illustration and cartoons! I’ve went to an art academy, and studied with truly great artist! In all the fields I’ve studied I’ve only ran into a brick wall with tattooing! As an art community I’ve always felt that we should share with one another and in every other medium I’ve come to realize this to be true but not with tattooing... and I fully agree with you that the tattoo industry is scared that their jobs will be at risk if they share! What about growth? Is this how sailor Jerry wanted the industry to become? He was always striving for growth. Being more open about tattooing will give way to new ideas and better ways of doing things! Strive for more get better help one another, and be brave!

    • @JonoSmithTattoo

I absolutely agree with you. I think if everyone showed a little love for each others work & shared a little knowledge the industry would move forwards a lot better than it is now.

Hi Jono, I'm relatively new to your videos and really want to say I think they're great for anyone both in he industry and interested in it. I'm now 41 and am still becoming happy with my own work as I am hyper critical, everyday is a learning curve with newer techniques etc. Was said I was born with a pencil in my hand and had an interest in tattooing since I was 14 and I finally got there. It's so true about the haters and trolls. For example Ink Master through editing makes the artists all seem like obnoxious cocks and viewers think that's how they should be in the industry. Humble with good art gets repeat custom. The town I am from only had one studio up until the past 5 years because of how much hate the owner had for other artists and he was what I would call a "Flash Harry". If it wasn't from a flash sheet, it didn't get done. He wouldn't use customers designs etc. Keep up the good work pal.
