I needed a while to realize this is not a "real" Händel suite, but a pastiche of his works. Spendidly put together (and played) by master harpsichordist Pierre Hantai,
Pierre BECOMES G. F. Handel in this extraordinary performance. His unerring sense of the inherent musicality of each phrase transports it from the realm of a plain statement to the highest form of musical oratory, and linked together for each movement of the Suite, we are in the presence of absolutely stunning musicianship. How marvelous to hear a truly superior technique like Pierre's in the absolute service of genial musicality, instead of just a showcase for pianistic fluency! Bravissimo Pierre Hantai, nous sommes vos serviteurs!!!
Brilliant, powerful, and extremely impressive interpretation by a master of the keyboard who isn't afraid to embellish, which he does so beautifully! "Un jeu parfait et éblouissant"
Pierre Hantaï is one of the great masters of the harpsichord. I don't usually comment but I had to reading the comment from Paul Caswell. "Authority" Totally in control.
The particular instrument used here is quite sonorous and suits the composition very well. Love it. The auditorium looks chock full, standing room included.
Expressive, articulate and technically proficient - such a joy to listen to! Reminds me of Lawrence Cummings or Ketil Haugsand. I can't wait to watch more of your work.
I just listened thanks to a friend who kindly shared it on Facebook! What a wonderful performance! Thanks for your skill, subtlety and, of course, thanks for uploading it to CZcams!!
@@jimbo2629 A lot of keyboard instruments of that time period tuned the bottom octave to a "short octave," basically to extend the low range of the instrument. It would still be notated in the score as the sounding pitch; but this is why in, for example, Scheidt's Tabulatura Nova, there are some intervals in the low octave which appear impossible to play; but it would be assumed that the harpsichord would have a short octave on the bottom which would make that possible.
This was brilliant! 💖 Jordi Savall was in the audience! Thanks a lot Mr. Hantaï. Your videos are worth many, but you're most welcome to post a little more of them! 😊
A flamboyant opening transcribed from operatic overture - the fact is, there exists a harpsichord reduction probably by Mr Handel himself, not preserved fully and published "as is" unfinished in the new Halle Edition. So Monsieur Hantaï might have taken it as basis and made his own complete version, so marvellously played :)
I have seen a video you played at Meguro Gajoen in Japan. The combination of Japanese painting and rameau was very fantastic. I am looking forward to the next visit to Japan.
I keep coming back to this! The first movement of the overture from the original version of Il Pastor Fido (1712) is a great piece. Except for the final movement I don't think there is a contemporary transcription of the other movements from this overture but they are equally fantastic. A keyboard arrangement of the final movement of the overture concludes another D minor harpsichord suite (HWV 428).
Hantaï makes the harpsichord sound gleaming and delicate. His quality playing is also consistent across many albums. Very high level of dedication, indeed!
Another excellent interpretation from, for me, the best harpsichord player today. I have been following Pierre Hantaï's recordings for about 20 years and I am very sorry that I cannot watch him live because not everyone has the financial possibility to travel and sustain a stay in order to see him. However, I consider myself privileged to have seen him live in Lisbon (Centro Cultural de Belém) playing the Goldberg Variations, BWV 988 by the insurmountable Bach. Just a curiosity... Did anyone else notice who's in the front row watching the concert?
i can say, i feel so sorry, i had the money to buy a harpsichord from Hamburg, 2000 euros. my mind was once i had a cembalo in my cold room. so i could have so many girls from the music academy.

Agreed! Pierre Hantai is wonderful! Robert Hill, another student of Gustav Leonhardt, has also posted many truly great performances.
Well said! His articulation does the utmost justice for the pieces he performs
When the harpsichord is so expressive it gives you goosebumps. This is astounding.
thank you. your performance is absolute BLISS. Mister Handel would be proud of you... God bless
your interpretation of the courant made Mister Handel come alive.
i cant believe how well this is played.
Pierre Hantai is a master and one of the best harpsichordist of the world!
💕❤️🇮🇷. Bravo !!!!!
Pierre is totally brilliant as we all agree here. His multi hand ornamentation is extraordinary. He is a Total musician.
I needed a while to realize this is not a "real" Händel suite, but a pastiche of his works. Spendidly put together (and played) by master harpsichordist Pierre Hantai,

Bravo davvero.
Brilliant, powerful, and extremely impressive interpretation by a master of the keyboard who isn't afraid to embellish, which he does so beautifully! "Un jeu parfait et éblouissant"
I like the way he pushed the shove coupler as he was playing the end of a movement.
@Dave Smith :D

Absolutely astoninshing work, my favourite harpsichordist living
That´s the way to play the Ouverture, wonderful!!!
Wow! I used to think I disliked solo harpsichord. But I'd never heard it played and recorded like this!
Mille mercis pour votre magnifique récital d'aujourd'hui à Taipei!
I am breathless...Pure awesomeness!
Outstanding. This is truly what baroque harpsichord music ought to sound like.
I don't know what word to use. Wow or amazing? I'll use both. WOW!! AMAZING!! Performer, performance, instrument. Magnificent.
Magnificent. Everything. Music, performance and instrument.
Rufus Coppertop c. Yes it is amazing!!!!

Thank you so much for your writing these.
It is so useful for us.

Maybe transpose or Baroque or Classical pitch.
So the key is different from common performances.
@XDranzer000
What happened to that?
Normally these pieces are called such FRENCH TERM for long long years!!
Do you have any problems?!
yani Handel başka suitlerden kolaj mı yapmış anlamadım?

A master performance.
Perfekt! Diese Musik ist Gold!
Thank you for bringing Handel to life in this 'real music' performance.
Incredible. I love that you tuned the bottom F# to the contra-octave D.
Couperin le Grand Hey Francois, is that authentic on a German harpsichord of 1700ish. It kind of shocked me. Is it in the score.

Love the Harpsichord and Handel compositions. Great performance

Yes, I noticed Savall, too! Quite an honor, for Hantaï…!
Pierre, I love this performance. I hope you will come to see us soon in Stonington!

It's performances like these that make me want to become better at the art of harpsichord playing.
This dude is a straight up master

Wow, a very amazing interpretation

Not that i like the rest of it but aren’t the variations on the minuet missing? But of course I love this performance.
God I love baroque music
Amazing ! Just why does it sound C sharp minor, is it because of the recording or because of the tunning ?
Baroque tuning: a=415Hz
