He drowned his heart with his love for his wife. It’s not a breakup song, just praising his love for his wife.
At that point they weren't married, but yeah...
Perfect song.
All the nuances and delicate ballet of the love dance, this song. Love the Cure and Robert Smith lyrics (and sound)
Exactly. He just loves her. He drowned his heart with her love!! 😍😍
@@alukuhito
I apologise for finding your comment a year later and commenting on agreeing with you.
Mary Poole is her name and they were married in 1988.
Culture Club, The Cure, New Order, Depeche Mode, Siouxsie, and Pet Shop Boys (amongst a plethora of other 2nd British new wave/Goth bands) filled up my teenage angsty years.
"I love how he sounds like he just woke up" ... as a Cure fan for 30 something years, that line made my night 😂
Wait until they hear “Lullaby” 🤣
@@negativeindustrial 😂
@@negativeindustrial Yess!
Excellent 😂
That sums up the cure
Disintegration.
The Cure has THE BEST love songs. Check out "Pictures of You", "Friday I'm in Love", "Boys Don't Cry" and, of course, "Love Song"
You didn't mention "Catch" which is one of the greatest love song ever written surely.
Letters to Elise
Pictures of you will instantly send me into a nostalgia spiral. excellent song
Mint Car
One of my favorite love songs ever
Friday I'm in love is their worst song so much better cure earlier stuff
This is from last years 1st new wave stream (Around Jan/Feb 2022) .
Yall were going to start off with donor's song (a Blancmange song if I recall), but chat wanted to go with this one instead.
Per frontman Robert Smith's analysis of the opening verse ("Show me, show me, show me how you do that trick"), the line is both a reference to his love of performing magic tricks in his youth and "about a seduction trick, from much later in my life," Yet, overall, the song has a very specific meaning about a very specific person. According to Songfacts, in an interview with Blender in 2003 Smith said that the song is about his wife Mary Poole and their star-crossed love as flatmates in London during the '80s. "The song is about hyperventilating - kissing and fainting to the floor," Smith told Blender. "Mary dances with me in the video because she was the girl, so it had to be her. The idea is that one night like that is worth 1,000 hours of drudgery."
For the ballad about Smith's muse, the band was given a lot of input from Mary herself (as well as the girlfriends of other band members) before the final version was cut. In fact, many of the band's flames hung out during recording sessions and critiqued the music: "The girls would sit on the sofa in the back of the control room and give the songs marks out often," Smith told Rolling Stone
The Cure is my absolute favorite band (I was a 90's Goth, and still hold it in my heart and style of dress now).
I was a rocke(as my name here says), but loved the whole 80s music scene. The Cure was a "guilty pleausre" for a lot of my rock friends.
My first taste of the Cure was on cassette. Staring at the Sea. It was a musical revelation.
Funny how creative bands are during their drug-manic days.
Possibly, the greatest band of the 80's with dozens of hits, and a unique and influential sound.
the smiths were slightly better but the cure is pretty close
Echo And The Bunnymen have to be in that list too
@@clololown the smith are not a musical reference. The Cure, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Joy Division are references.
@@gothafrogs5003 o0f course they are, the smiths ended the gay synth pop bullshit of the 80s
Not quite "dozens" of hits. Frankly, not many "hits" at all, at least in the US. It's why they were known as an alternative band. Only 1 top ten hit on Billboard charts and only about 5 or 6 in the top 50. But they have sold around 30 million albums.
The synths & piano on this little tune ARE heavenly.
One of my most favorite songs after 53 years on this planet. Takes me back to high school.
I'm so glad that you're exploring the "alternative" side of the 80s. There's so much to discover and enjoy. If you want to react to more from The Cure, I'd recommend their more commercial songs like "The love cats", "Close to me" & "Inbetween days".
Imagine Brad listening to Love Cats 🤣
Lullaby
Definitely. Close to me would be my favourite of those. Id also throw in Pictures of You.
Friday i'm in love
@@razor6552 The best Cure song. Closely followed by 'Close to me'
The Cure is great!!!!
The Cure 'are' great
Robert Smith, the vocalist, sounds like this pretty much all the time. He is musical genius and I have been listening to the Cure since the early 80s as a kid...
You should really do more of their tracks...I think you'll get them more and more...Check these out:
Close to Me
Pictures of You
Boys Don't Cry
In Between Days
A Forest
The Walk
A Forest!
lovesong?
Yep 👍
Unavailable B-Sides🤟❤️
From the edge of the deep green sea!
I like how she's like "this isn't a club beat" but this got steady rewinds at alternative dance clubs all over. It's very danceable.
"Close To You", one of my favorite songs from The Cure. Lex will love it and giggle her way to the music! 🎶🤭
The Cure is the only band that I would actually the cd (album or cassette tape) insert and carry around just to read the lyrics…they read like poetry. Plainsong, Fascination Street, In Between Days, Prayers for Rain, Pictures of You, Open, Letter to Elise, To Wish Impossible Things, Apart, etc…. all great songs. These guys almost made heartbreak worth having…
Every Cure song is a poem and a story...
This is a great first intro to The Cure.
He Loved his Wife forever...no break up
Deep Love, Punk Love....watch their videos of their songs on stage....
They didn't separate. The more you Watch the Cure the more you can't stop
Gosh!!! So many memories, friends, loves, moments, and The Cure always there, for more than FOURTY YEARS 😱😢😭🤗.
This was a top 40 pop song that had no chorus and a nearly minute long intro. Pretty nifty achievement if you ask me. This song has a bit of a mandela effect with me, because it feels like really should have been used as an iconic song from an iconic 80s film, and yet it wasn't. But I'm pretty sure you could throw this on to the end of any teen, coming of age, or romance movie from the 80s and it would fit perfectly and make a great ending song.
@Jeff Whiteside I'll have to check out that movie. Or at least the version from it.
This is the song and album that made them worldwide stars
One of my all time fav bands. I graduated HS in "92. Bought Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me on cassette when it came out and wore it out in my "Walk Man". So many great songs. Enjoy this fun rabbit hole!
Kiss me kiss me kiss me was my first Cure album. I own every one now. I find that only certain types of people “get” their music and they, for me at least, are too few and far between here in Kansas. I’m going with Bloodfowers as my favorite with Disintegration as a close second. I can’t wait for the new album to come out!
oh yesss.& disintegration wz soooo frigging awesome too
The cure are fucking amazing. - he’s just talking about someone you love not being near you. Not literally seperated by a body water
“Boys Don’t Cry,” has to be the next Cure song!!!!
The Cure was definitely an 80's icon of Alternative Rock.
One of the greatest pop songs ever written.
The Cure Fascination Street, is my absolute favorite. The bass line is kicking.
Robert Smith had a great way of putting dark lyrics to upbeat tunes. The Cure are timeless. More please.
The cure "Close to me " :)
My favorite band for the last 36 years, I have seen them live 18 times. All of their songs are great!
By far the best band of the 80s. And best performance at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ever (many decades later). OMG, all good lyrics are poetic (metaphorical, symbolic, allegorical, etc.).
robert smith is a genius songwriter... he has written some beautiful pieces of music, as well as some of the darkest
this is a perfect pop song, and it follows none of the rules... brilliant
I’ve seen them several times in concert. Excellent band.
This IS his voice and it's iconic! It's about his wife - they have been married for so long and an inspiration to many!
I've always loved it because it's whimsical. I also think it's a sad song of finding love and losing it and having a hard time with no longer having it. Btw that's Robert Smiths singing voice. I love so many of their songs. A Forest, Pictures Of You, Why Can't I Be You, A Letter To Elise, Never Enough, Lullaby, Boys Don't Cry, Catch, Burn, Close to Me, Lovesong, Fascination Street, Friday I'm In Love, Hot Hot Hot, Let's Go To Bed & The Walk.
One of the top modern rock bands of the 80', 90's and beyond. Yes, you will find some of their lyrics a little on the strange side. Other bands to check out are Siouxsie and the Banshees, Psychedelic Furs, Cocteau Twins and Slowdive.
The Psychedelic Furs latest album Made Of Rain is great stuff.
Nice list
Cocteau Twins are incredible, such a big catalog as well
Not rock tho. Darkwave is the genre.
Your music mirrors your mind
The band is actually called Siouxie Sue and the Banshees You're forgetting the Sue part
the way he sings is just his style - he sings like this on every song in the band - this is why he was so popular
This is my wife and my song from the first time we dated back in the 80's. She was 15 a punk/goth and I was 18 a jock, she introduced me to the underground scene and music. I became a closet punk/goth! still listen to this music today!!!!
The Cure was one of the best Indy rock bands of the 80s/90s! Robert Smith’s voice is so unique and dreamy! ❤️❤️
I'm not a huge The Cure fan, but this song has been on my playlist for years.
The singer always looks like he just woke up.
God I miss the 80s.
Great track. I think the separation is the singer being on tour, and wishing he was home with his wife.
Robert Smith from the Cure his voice is unique listen to a few more of their tracks & trust me you'll love them
One of the Best Live shows Ive ever seen. Lucky to have seen them about 10 times over the years. Music is so SOOTHING. Great Band and Robert is amazing singer.
The Cure are so amazing. I've been a fan for 30 years 😍😍
Most of The Cure's music is dreamy, I love it!
Finally the Cure! Love them, please do more songs!
The Singer Robert Smith wrote this "Love" Song for his wife and is a beloved tune for THE CURE Fans to this day!
Robert met Mary in high school. This particular song was written about a day on the beach on a vacation with his wife when dating. Their favourite spot they would go to and the love he has for her. This was one of my Wedding Songs. Amazing Band ! He was and is still so much in love with his wife and they have been married for about 40 years. Another fave song of theirs is Cut Here which was going to be their last song as one of Robert's best friend's committed suicide and this song is dedicated to him. (If you move the letters around in Cut Here it Spells The Cure!
Love Lex's Robert Smith impression🤣! Was never a huge fan of the band's entire catalogue, but bought this LP in the late 80's, as the whole thing was 🔥 (like this one). Pretty sure you guys will find that New Wave is a very broad, diverse genre. Everything from, post punk, techno, guitar based, alternative dance, neo-psychedelia, etc. I noticed some downbeat tracks were winning the polls during the stream, but there are plenty of super high energy bands/tracks to choose from. Hope you guys continue to delve into it!
A classic from my young teenage days
Classic. The Cure has been one of my favorite bands since the 80's, their sound really takes to my special place :)
I love the incredible guitar in the left ear of my headphones coming in and out.
The cure 🖤🖤🖤🖤
Just takes me back to my college days in the 80s. The Cure and The Smiths. That alternative music for us students to relate too
The smile on Lex's face says it all...
The Cure is my all time favorite band!! This band transports me to a different place. I decide which mood I am in and then pick the album that fits and listen from start to finish. Disintegration album is epic.
Yup.....exactly
Cute little pop number by everyones favorite goth band the CURE. He know looks like everyones Aunt Edna, however, live, his voice is excellent and good as it was 40 years ago - a real treat.
When he was really young he looked like Ben Affleck :)
One of my favourite songs! Never got tired of it even after some 30+ years.
This is one of the best songs of the 1980s. Top 10 of all time.
Boys Don't Cry, Love Song, Friday I'm In Love, A Letter To Elise
Need to react to those too.
Lalabye to me..
I love The Cure, they give me a vibe like no other band has. Just puts me in a dreamy other dimension even after all these years of listening.
The Cure reminds me of my early 20s..... this chit never gets old.....
Loving the way Lex is bopping away and grinning from the very start of the song... it's so infectious and exactly the reaction of all the Cure fans throughout the years
1) I LOVE The Cure. Well done.
2)Robert Smith played guitar for Siouxsie and the Banshees for a bit and is well known as having been inspired by that experience
Lucky enough to see them in 2018. Absolutely brilliant live. A lot of old goths and loads of young fans xx
Lex looks like such a Cure fan! If she listens to their catalogue she will surely be a mega fan.
Only Robert could make heartbreak sound this happy.
"Friday I'm in Love" is a must, it always reminds me to my childhood, I remember watching the video sitting on the coutch with ny father, and my uncle, great times 💯👌🏻
This was the first band I ever saw live, back in 1992. It was a life changing event.
The Cure and Depeche Mode in the same day? Two of my favorite groups.
Check out The Cure - Pictures of You
Lex is an internal punk rocker born after her time.
More of The Cure! Woooooo!
Oh The Cure nice! Club music back in the days '80s and '90s. New wave 👏 goth punk type. Brings me back to my youth. Roller skating days
Song that puts smile on your face from begining to the end... The Cure, iconic band!!!
The Cure live...3hr odd sets, absolutely LOVE THEM!!!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
The Cure are arguably the most successful goth band ever.
Also worth checking a lot of their other songs, I'd specially recommend The Caterpillar, it sounds like nothing you've ever heard before.
Not goth in any shape or form... because of his hair.. goth music is far darker.. the cure is very commercial alternative.
@@jaycordner3890 and here it is, as expected, some rando gatekeeper had to come and claim that they can't be considered goths because they've had success.
@Marco Lopes Robert Smith left Siouxie and the banshees... they were goth. What is goth about the cures sound??? Its far to commercial and more like alternative because he looked the part. Listen to Bauhuas, Siouxie and tell me they sound similar. I like The Smiths but they ain't no goth band... that's for sure. And yes I grew up with the British culture. This was in my teens.. I ain't no rando and know a s... load about punk,SKA,goth, synth, pop, industrial, grunge etc.
I remember picking up goth girls in clubs in the 80s when I was a teenager, they all loved the cure so hey, went home to the guitar and learnt the songs. If it wasn't for girls I probably would have spent the 80s and 90s playing nothing but metal, 😊
John Lennon said he started playing music to get girls.
@@sonnybarry it really does work. ;)
@@zoeherriot it depends, no girl gets turned on with thrash metal shredding, the lady's like more meaningful songs, something with soul and melody, and since so much music is so emotionally expressive being a competent musician is definitely an automatic advantage when it comes to attracting girls,
@@Kipperbob Well, I played mostly selections from the catalogs of The Cure, U2, Smiths, Doors, Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, The Church, etc - but I was also happy to learn a new song if I thought a girl liked it. Again - worked a treat. ;)
This is what I LOVE about alt 80s college rock... if you didn't live "in" the time.. you'll never really get it. Ours forever!!!
I saw him for this concert. He was also in Siouxsie and the Banshes, The Glove, and produced other bands like And also the Trees and the The Cranes.
This was a staple for 80s night at the club.
Glorious love song, I love the Cure.
The Cure top 10 band of all time 👍
Written & Recorded As A Wedding Gift To His Wife,, The Cure "Lovesong"
ahhhh... thank you for reacting to this one. It's one of my favorite songs.
The verse "stole the only girl I loved, drowned her deep inside of me" could also be interpreted as either a memory of her literally drowning, or leaving him to live across the pond.
I totally missed you guys doing this! Appreciated. Just Like Heaven is my favourite song ❤️
In the 80s there was Rock, Metal, Pop, and of course, welcome to New Wave and the Cure. For other New Wave, check out: The Smiths, Brian Ferry, Flock of Seaguls, Oingo Boingo... whole different vibe.
Wow man, Brad you are such a lucky man, i don’t care what kind of day you are having that big smile of Lex’s could melt your soul…
He sounds like that a lot. Sweetest song.
The word you guys are looking for to describe the Cures sound is Lush. It’s the most commonly used word to describe all that glorious sound mixing together and all somehow fitting into your ears at once.
This song was definitely on my post-wedding playlist. And I got married in 2009. Timeless stuff right here.
Saw them live last week, great live band even after over 40 years on stage, so fresh, so funny and playing for over two and a half hours. Awesome!
The Cure, one of the most underrated bands of all time..... My teenage years
This brings back some very old memories. College days was just fun.
Their song 'Primary' typifies the 80's sound even though I think it was one of their earlier late 70's song.
Robert Smith, such a great songwriter, up there with Lennon and McCartney in my books. An ability to write the perfect pop song like this and then write something like Fascination Street, Pictures of you or Last day of Summer. The man is a genius. If you enjoyed this track, check out Friday I'm in love, Mint Car, Boys Don't Cry, Inbetween Days, and Close to me.
THE CURE has tons of great songs.
You need to do Disintegration by The Cure, love that song.
The wohle Disintegration album is so perfect, one of the best albums ever made.
@@_Shadoh_ I concur, but I was actually just thinking of the song...but it's whatever, I'd watch it, just saying. Lol.
@@_Shadoh_ It's a superb album, from the subwoofer pounding atmospheric opening of Plainsong to the melancholy untitled final track. The only problem with recommending a single track off Disintegration is that it almost feels like something is missing. The whole album really is a package experience, like Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. "Time" or "Pictures of You" are excellent on their own but they gain something from being heard as part of the whole.
The Cure are an amazing band you really should listen to “A Forest” it’s a big fan favourite, more indie 80s please
Lex always gets into the groove from the first few notes.
