Having been raised around farms and veterinary medicine, I am always impressed by the great commentary from Mike, Ranger Felicia, and Ranger Naomi. You each keep the explanations fact-based but also express such empathy for viewers. Nature can seem harsh and unfair as it seeks balance. Your observations help build a better understanding of that reality with these exceptionally beautiful creatures.

Isn't that the perfect truth!! As human beings we always look for answers reasons or blame. I wish I could stop that.
Deep down I suspect something happened to the cub that had nothing to do with a boar. I have felt all season that it wasn’t that healthy-looking & not as food-motivated as you’d expect from a growing young bear.
My suspicion is that it went down in the bushes, 901 panicked, and she charged Bucky & Chunk to push them away from her sick cub. Then she waited as long as she could until it was over. That could also explain why the other two coy stayed treed so long, if their sibling’s body was underneath them 🥺

No. That cub was smaller but had almost become the same size as the others. Immediately before the incident it was swimming just fine with the rest of the family. It was a boar-that is why the cubs stayed in a tree for 12 hours! That is very hard to do even for a cub-they were scared.
@@CastleMc they were treed for almost 20 hours, FYI
@@CastleMc they were definitely scared, they actually stayed treed for over 19 hours. We don’t know if the small cub had trouble swimming or not. There is an infectious canine hepatitis that kills cubs, including one earlier this year at Katmai. Also, 901 was acting protective of the area before either boar appeared, at least on-camera.
I’m just giving my hypothesis. None of us have hard facts-and we may never get any. But I’ve been concerned for this cub for months.
That is just incredible!! It is definitely a sign that they were very scared + that 901 wasn't encouraging them to climb down. That is a VERY long time to hold on, esp. without eating or sleeping @@CorsoLady

I just started watching these bears this year after watching a few birds nests streams, owls and loons. Some of the chicks were lost in various ways. I was very sad but I know this is a part of nature. Someday I would like to have some chickens and I know I will have to be prepared for nature to be nature.
Where's the bear police when you need one?! Also, 901 needs a bear attorney so she can file charges against the perpetrators of the crime they've commited!! Let Otis be the bear judge and Grazer as the persecutor!! 😭😭😭😭😭✌️
I believe I can accept/understand the balance of nature. If I didn't, then I shouldn't be watching. But I can't seem to stop the humanistic part of me that resents cub killers - even tho I love them, I hate it. I'm pretty certain that's what happened, let's be realistic. And it happens every year, everywhere, there are predatory activities. Anyway, 901 is a wonderful new Mom, but she has to learn about life just like we do. It's wonderful that she still has TWO cubs.
CHUNK is a big boy - that perspective was crazy against 901. Blessings to 901 and family. Thank you for the play by play.
My thought is that the cubs were hiding near the same spot 32 was sleeping and didn't know it. He woke up when 901 and Bucky got into it. He caught up with one of the cubs as they scattered. Followers of the stream know male bears aren't kind to cubs. Mamma bear spent the night tending to the injured cub while the other two slept in the trees for protection. Don't get me wrong, I hope to see a video of the family reunion, but I don't have a lot of confidence it will happen.

901 appeared stressed before the Boars showed up. She never physically made contact with the Boars and vice versa, I think the cub was already deceased :( We will never know.

Something traumatic happened to send the other cubs into a tree for 20 hours which is almost impossible to endure-they had to be highly motivated by fear to accomplish that. Naomi said she saw an altercation between 901 + another adult bear-it just wasn't on camera
I think she realized she was missing a cub...causing the stress...I posted what I saw shortly before the incident...I pray that lil cub has been eating and hopefully adopted...we may never know...I do keep scouring all cams still looking for it...I keep ears open for cub crys

Thank you for this video. It was hard to tell what happened with the 3rd, but from our view, Chunk and Bucky were nowhere near the cubs. Bucky backed off immediately and Chunk seemed as though he just wanted to be left alone. Nature can be so sad.
Mike F. said there was a case to be made that Chunk just wanted to be left alone, but I think he may well have killed the cub. He and 901 fought briefly and she was afraid of him. The 2 surviving cubs were obviously traumatized or they wouldn't have stayed in a tree for 12+ hours! that is very hard even for a cub.
Will there be any investigation by rangers to find out the facts?

Why do these huge male bears feel so threatened by a baby bear and need to kill it ? 😢😢😢 or is this a question only mother nature knows. First 26j and now 901s baby.
they kill the cubs in an attempt to bring the female into Estrus/Season so they can breed her before they den up
There is absolutely no confirmation of it being killed by a male
I still hold firm in my belief of what I had posted earlier on the BF chat ...a bit earlier that day .her and all three cubs were at the bridge. One cub went into the water to the left...and was paddling away on a mission looked like...901 and the other two got in the water and swam away to the right....all at the same time ..I felt at that point they were gonna be separated and could obviously do nothing but watch all the while very worried. Then a bit later the incident happened with chunk and 164 who just looked more curious and then afraid of 901 and chunk and his presence. I have scoured the cams since then looking for the missing cub. 901 during that incident may have realized she didn't have all three with her and became frantic as expected. I still hold out hope that lil cub is still around and hopefully eating ..it just really bothers me seeing them all swim away opposite of each other

Can't understand why bears like 856 and others are cub killers.
Nature. Bears are far from the only animals to kill their own or others' young.
They are not like wolves who live in packs. The males mate and eat. Including cubs, even their own
Cubs were killed. I saw it from heat sensoring camera 😢.

@@BenNSyder_ What a horrible "joke"! We don't know what happened to this cub. We probably never will. But saying you know it was killed because of images from an imaginary camera is just uncalled for.

Mother is not going stick around male bears specially a mom with cubs. It seems that one her cubs ran into big bear and was killed. So mom isnt going to stick around trying see what a big male bear is doing unless it got one of the cubs. Reason for her keep trying go to spot where male is has be he got a cub. And the cubs arent small so it would put up a little fight, also the male bear keeps gping back to same spot and isnt after the other cubs. My guess. Yes only a guess.
