  • My spoiler-free review of The Black Coast by Mike Brooks. This is the first book in the God-King Chronicles, featuring war dragons, fearsome raiders, and two different cultures trying to build a new life together.

    That's some really good company with those other 21's. This one has been quietly on my TBR for awhile but this review might have just moved it up to the next month or two. Thanks for sharing Dom!

      No problem, Chad! The other 21s were Blood Song, Winter Warriors, and The Deed of Paksenarrion btw.

    Fantastic review! I'm always willing to give something a little different a try as much as I like tried and true fantasy.

      This one feels very much like a proper fantasy. It's just a different story to what I'm used to seeing.

    Sounds interesting. So I've bought the ebook. Not quite sure when I'll have a chance to get to it. Someday

      I know that feeling. But yes, this one was definitely an interesting one.

    Great review! Wondering if you’ve ever read between two fires, since you’ve reviewed black tongue thief. I highly recommend giving it a try even though it’s more grounded than fantasy.

      Thanks! I haven't read Between Two Fires - it's been discussed on Discord and when I looked at it, I didn't feel it would be the book for me. Some people I know who have read it really enjoyed it though.

    Deadly review, Dom! Definitely a series I should keep my eyes on

    I read this one in April too. I did really enjoy but felt like it was just missing that indefinable something to make it a favourite. I'm planning to read The Splintered King towards the end of May so I can pick up God Breaker in June. If you wanted to buddy read either give me a shout 🙂

    • @dominishbooks

      I don't think I'd be able to get to The Splinter King this month, maybe not next month either. I definitely don't want to leave them too long though.

    Dammit, I really need to get to this one, it's been lingering on my kindle for way too long! The premise of these two cultures trying to live together instead of making war sounds so interesting, I can't wait to read this!
    Thank you so much for the great review, I loved hearing your thoughts as always :)

    • @dominishbooks
      @dominishbooks  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes, that was a really interesting aspect of it, and one I've not really seen before. I'm glad it was the main focus of the book - you can see there are other things going on as well though, of course.

    This was a 5 star read for me and I share a lot of your same thoughts/praises. I do wish though that the povs had been a little more balanced in Black Coast because I think it sets up the wrong expectations for book 2. The lesser povs suddenly get almost as much, if not more, page time than Daimon and Saana and I hadn't become as invested in them yet so it took away from some of my enjoyment. Still enjoyed the sequel overall though!
    Also I hadn't noticed the similarity between Zhanna and Saana until you pointed it out but that would definitely be confusing in audio. In physical format, I found the Alaban gender forms a little hard to differentiate because I wasn't sure how to sound them out in my head.

    • @dominishbooks
      @dominishbooks  Před 2 lety

      I did sort of expect that might be the case for book 2, it's a shame, because as you say, book 1 doesn't really prepare you for that, other than a couple of bits that are essentially snippets.

    📚I need to read this! Where did you get hardback copies of Faithful and the Fallen??

    • @dominishbooks
      @dominishbooks  Před 2 lety +1

      It was really good! The Faithful and the Fallen are originals, I got them when they were published, so it was easy to pick them up at the time!

    Great review, I've been put it off for a long time as it has mixed reviews but now I'll buy it for sure, what do you mean by linguistic choices? Does it have very poetic prose?

    • @dominishbooks
      @dominishbooks  Před 2 lety +1

      Most of the mixed reviews I've seen focussed on that linguistic choice. What I meant by that was the majority of the characters referring to themselves in the third person, so instead of saying "I do", for instance, I would say "This man does."

    • @muttineni03
      @muttineni03 Před 2 lety

      @@dominishbooks @dominish_books Oh yes that can get confusing especially to me, but I'll try it myself and see how i like it.
