  • Learn about the design consideration of hydrogen fuel cell stacks from experienced engineers in the hydrogen economy. Steven and Roger discussed the technology behind the hydrogen economy, focusing on fuel cell stacks. The factors that influence stack design are such as power, heat rejection, efficiency, voltage, and packaging space, as well as shock and vibration. In terms of shock resistance, rail applications have the harshest requirements. Roger also discussed the difference between fuel cell stacks used in marine, automotive and rail applications. The need to match the stack voltage to the DC DC converter and the importance of ensuring the stack can handle shock and vibration were also outlined.

Executive Summary of Tech Talk Script:
Hyfindr Tech Talks is a video series focusing on understanding the technology that makes the hydrogen economy work. In this episode, Steven from Hyfindr Tech Talks interviews an experienced fuel cell stack designer from AVL Fuel Cell Canada, Roger. Steven asks Roger about the maximum number of fuel cell stacks that can be stacked together, and Roger explains that the number of stacks depends on the required power, heat rejection, efficiency requirements, active area, current density, packaging space, voltage, DC-DC converter, compression force, shock and vibration, and customer requirements. The topics such as converter voltage and shock and vibration were also discussed. Roger explains that when designing a fuel cell stack, factors like heat rejection, efficiency requirements, active area, current density, packaging space, voltage, DC-DC converter, compression force, shock, and vibration are all interrelated, and the designer must take into consideration all these inputs from the requirements and the customer to decide the number of cells that are required in the stack.

Designing the gearboxes in trains involves significant technological difficulties due to the intense vibrations. It's intriguing that even though the majority of rotating parts will be eliminated when fuel cells are used as a power source, this issue will persist even though the vibration's amplitude has diminished. Regards for this discussion.

The stack is like a carburetor. The carburetor has a little tube with a plunger that adds gas for exceleration. With higher exceleration the vacuum increases and that draws in mkre fuel. What I'm saying is that it functions like a small battery to start the exceleration that increases the speed of the pistons (vacuum) to set your new fuel requirement.
So you will not need all that math and expensive engineering to make a good product.
For the cell stacks, put slices of your plastic cutting board under the cells. 😂
