  • Living in a rural location with no ambient light, it’s very important to have a powerful torch in case of emergencies or power outages. We received the Maglite ML300L 4D (4D because it takes four D-size batteries) and based on first impressions I think that is a torch we are going to have for a very long time.

I have a total of 6 Maglites. I have 2 original Maglites that are about 35 years old and have upgraded both of them to LED, and they are still going strong! The other 4 are the newest technology LED. You won't regret buying them.

Great for a calving aid for cows, the calving ropes have a loop at each end two ropes. You need to pull the calf out sometimes. Nothing to put through the loops of the rope to pull on. On a dark night calving a cow..need to.pull on the ropes use your maglite. Works. I have done it.

Maglite was the first choice for a powerfull and durabilty Torch in Aviation maintenance.
Worldwide are Batteries available for another run around.
The Maglite ML300L 4D LED is obvisusly in Lengh, stamina and durabilty the best argument in these days.

As a 100km Long Distance walker for many years, much in Belgium during nights, I used the small Maglite which was able to be carried in the belt, but without the ability to make nights to days, I must admit. It used the traditional bulbs, to be changed at intervals, so I never had the pleasure of low power consumption from LEDs. Finn. Denmark

Hallo, i have the 4D LED and 3D LED, both new and same Batteries. But why is my 3D with 750 Lumen a little brighter and has more range than my 4D?

Invest rechargeable d cell if not don't store alkaline cell inside flashlight too long or they will leak and expand if you don't use the torch often.

@@MyHomeFarmI'd like to give another friendly tip. Some of the online chatting I've done on flashlight forums (Candlepower Forums) indicated that Maglites may suffer from something known as parasitic drain, which essentially means the batteries may continue to very slightly discharge even while the light is not in use. To prevent this and maximize battery life, it's been suggested that you can unscrew the tailcap to sever the full connection. Just turn the light on, and unscrew the tailcap (where the batteries are inserted) until the light goes off, and parasitic drain should be halted. But in any case, ALWAYS keep at least one set of spare batteries in the house if you are going to be using regularly, of course! Glad to see you guys giving Maglite some love!

Thank you for the detailed comment and great advice. We always keep spare batteries for emergencies, but we’ll definitely unscrew to the tail cap to prevent drain. Great tip. We’re loving the Maglite, and it came in extremely useful when we had our first major power failure courtesy of storm Arwen.

I recently bought 4 of the 4 D Xenon Maglites in order to get them for cheap and upgrade them with an LED. So I paid at Walmart 18$ for each and ordered an LiteXpress 525 Lumen LED for it. These 4 D 1002 Lumen LED flashlights cost over 100$ online. To me the runtime is IMO way overstated. There is no chance the light will output 1000 Lumens for 5 hours. Although the factory LED MagLites are a bit more efficient than third party LED upgrades but not by much.
I ran thus my 3D factory LED 168 Lumen Maglite for 3 hours with 20% the power source (3 x AA NiMH batteries) and thats the point where it diminished greatly the light output. The same light is stated to have an runtime for 80 hours when used 3 D cells but that translates only to 16 hours of runtime in real life (considered 10000 mAh for an 4 D). If you divide the stated runtime by the factor 5.5 you get to the real life runtime. I get with the LiteXpress about an runtime of 1.4 hours on 525 Lumen (high) and about 15 hours theoretical for the low 55 Lumen mode.
In your case the 4 D 1002 Lumen light will last on high about exactly 1 hour. On medium setting it will last for about 17 hours and on moonshine mode (about 5 Lumen that is) it will last you about 78 hours. Compare that to the standard 3D LED 168 Lumen Maglite which is stated to last 80 hours but in real life it would last only about 16 hours of runtime.
The thing is these batteries have allways the same power and are in series and not paralel. If the batteries are in series they just make for higher Voltage and thus for the same amount of time you get just way more light output. Thats why these have allways increasing lumens.
The Xenon 98 Lumen Maglites my new ones came with (which I upgraded afterwards) lasted with 4 x AA batteries exactly 1.5 hours. So thats 20% of the power source being 100% (propper 4 D cells) it would last 7.5 hours of shining (Xenon bulb at 98 lumens).
So your light will last on high about 1 hour, on middle setting about 17 hours and on lowest mode around 78 hours. That means theoretically that the middle setting is around 250 Lumens of your flashlight.
A Thousand lumens are very much but that comes with an cost of the running time. Remember the same 4 D batteries must now power 1002 Lumens while these same batteries power my 525 Lumens. Thats half the light but double the runtime.

Maglite seems to be constantly playing with the runtime and top down times, but most of the multi mode lights that I've played with seem to stay at their marketed brightness for 1-3 minutes, then ramp down to the low setting - about 25% of full power. It'll then stay like that until near the end of the advertised runtime. This has been my experience with the ml300's from around '18-'19.

It's a shame that the flashlight doesn't have an indicator for the battery status. Otherwise the quality is impressive. Many greetings from Germany.😊

I’m a big flashlight fan, have many of them, including one LEP (there’s a laser instead of an LED) which has a range of nearly a mile, but this is purely search light, not really useful in day to day life. Have also really nice gadget lights made by Olight which has everything you can dream of on the flashlight, even proximity sensor not to blind someone when you point the light too close to the surface or face. The one I’ve got has 2000 lumens and it’s pocket size, the model is Warrior 3S.
HOWEVER. I really doubt these lights are half as sturdy as Maglites. Long, long time ago I’ve bought maglite 6D, incandescent, which is now at my family home, has probably about 25 years now and I’ve only changed the Incan bulb into LED and I must say it’s literally indestructible. It served really hard times, don’t have gizmos, led battery indicators, all that stuff, but that’s the thing. Simplicity is the key sometimes. 1000 lumens is probably just about what you need in real life and focus / zoom abilities is a nice add on and quite unique. The only one zoomable light I know is LED Lenser, but don’t give that much throw unless you buy their flagship light which is about £400 :/
The other thing is that 4D version has much more capacity then usual pocket size led. It simply lasts much longer. I recommend buying 1.5v rechargeable D size cells from Amazon. Yes, 1.5 volts. There are rechargeable like that. Most of them are 1.2 v, but getting 1.5 volts won’t make losing any flashlight’s performance. You can get USB rechargeable together with charging cables as a set. I am going to buy the flashlight for myself soon hence I was looking especially for beam shots and these look really impressive. This light should be in every household as D batteries can be bought in nearly every store and it makes great emergency light if no power to charge your rechargeables. Thanks for the review, just subscribed your channel, you’re really nice and professional people, your channel is a pleasure to watch. All the best!
