History of Algeria, the largest country in Africa

Algeria, an Islamic state with a population of about 43 million people is sited in Northern Africa and extends southwards deep into the Sahara desert therefore adopting the hot climatic condition associated with it.
It also spans across a total of 919,595 square miles thus making it the largest country in Africa and the eleventh largest in the world.
However, the country like many other African countries grew from a rich traditional background, faced the battles of colonialism and fight for independence, specifically experienced transition from ruling to opposition party in government, are blessed with natural resources, tourist attractions, festivals and forms of entertainment which translate in the economy of the country but still has challenges which plagues it like every developing country. Before colonization by the French, Algeria was ruled by the Ottoman Empire with Algiers as its capital (even up until now) and was ruled by governors known as Pasha and subsequently Dey. The official language was Turkish and this period also called the Ottoman era ended after its defeat in World War I. Islam which became the predominant religion after the second Arab military invasion by the Umayyads( a Muslim dynasty in Damascus) between 642 and 669 also is a strong sacred institution which influences several of the customs of the people of Algeria. Also, Kin groups also stand as traditional institutions as they wield political power in villages.

I've always wanted to know the history of African countries before the Europeans arrived. Who were the kings and how did they become kings. What were the famous battles, or were there african explorers that discoverd other tribes. Who were there legends. Certainly African civilization didn't begin when the French, Dutch, Germans, English men, etc arrived on the African continent. All is ever taught is shaka zulu or Mansa Musa . Seems like there's a huge gap with African history
