- The John Wick franchise has told us more about the title character’s backstory with every installment, instead of giving us a big information dump all at once. The gradual revelation of the character’s full backstory helps the pace of the series along, but some viewers have found it a bit challenging to keep the whole timeline in order. Wick is a legendary assassin, so it’s understandable that his backstory is larger-than-life, from his early years in Belarus to the last job he had to do before his (temporary) retirement. His backstory is all over the place. The tattoo on his back orginally led people to believe he was an ex US Marine. But then the John Wick graphic novel came out and revealed that he spent much of his childhood as a street rat in Central America. Then John Wick 3 retconned that and told us he was from Belarus and the Ruska Roma immigrated him to New York and trained him from childhood to be an assassin.
He had been in the marines tho I think even one of the scriptwriters or someone said so

All three JWs are classics, unheard of, I can't wait for part 4, I THOUGHT MATRIX WAS HIS DEFINING ROLE, BUT THIS IS EPIC ACTION STORY TELLING.
Keanu was extraordinary in Street Kings. Not sure why that movie didn't have a sequel or at least received more attention.

@@XinneH He does. His theory also works because Winston never shot John Wick in the head, where you would expect someone to shoot if you're trying to kill. Instead, he only shoots John's bulletproof suit, forcing him off the ledge, where several metal things break his fall(and also probably his back)

The Bowery king was considered dead before Winston so no they had no contact he did that because John had saved him and he was a righteous hit man and the Bowery king wanted revenge so that’s why he found John

In Russian folklore, Baba Yaga was a witch that ate naughty little children, so she was the equivalent of the boogeyman. being the boogeyman, she was everything you feared, incarnate. ... But remember, John Wick was not just the boogeyman, he was the one you sent to kill the boogeyman.
Baba yaga is from the Gilgamesh epic...that was the name of the demon giant that protected the cedar trees in the great cedar forest

I’ve not made a deep study of the three (as of April 2020) movies but: 1) I’m pretty sure John’s stash was cemented under his basement floor, not his garage; 2) Sophia’s dogs were Belgian Malinois; 3) it’s strongly implied that Winston didn’t really betray John (just put on a show of doing so for the Adjudicator) since he was likely aware that John’s suit was bulletproof and given their proximity, Winston undoubtedly could’ve made a head/kill shot as he likely has some training of his own.

John's Blood Marker with/ to Santonio isn't a mistake (re - 4:20). Not at all! While it's not explicitly hand-fed to the audience, the wording of the Blood Marker is easy enough to extrapolate; "I, Santonio, will help you perform this impossible task so that you can retire and stay retired. However, if you ever dip your finger back into our world/ if you ever come out of retirement, I will call upon you and your Blood Marker to do a favour for me."
So, again, had John stayed retired, he would never have heard from Santonio again. It was only when John came out of retirement to avenge his puppy and reclaim (and eventually destroy his beloved Boss 429 Charger) his car, that Santonio was able to go to John to fulfil his Marker. So it's not really fair for _Looper_ to say that it was a mistake for John to ask Santonio for his help via a Blood Marker. It wasn't a mistake at all and had Helen lived, had young Iosef Tarasov not killed puppy, John would have been able to continue to live out the rest of his life in peace.
Well that just saved me several hours on netflix, for such a nice bloke in real life boy does he do badass well.

This is one of the few franchises that has made it to 3 movies and not totally trashed the concept. I thought JW3 teetered on the brink at times , especially some of the stupidly elogated fight scenes later in the movie. Halle Berry was pretty good I thought, you could see she had done the work behind the scenes. I thought it was going to be more forced wimmenizem but she had a good part and carried it off well.
I can’t wait for the fourth one!

Actually the writers of John wick have confirmed that he was a US Marine. His tattoo on his back, from latin, translated to mean fortune favours the bold, is a USMC battalion motto, stationed out of Hawaii. The writers offered that to honour Keanu's Hawaiian heritage. You can Google this to confirm as fact.
And yet his entire backstory is grounded in Slavic, specifically Russian culture, and as the video says, the tattoos are largely shared by his "Ruskya Roma" (Romani of Rus) people. Not all of that community are going to be marines. The tattoo may have been added to honour Keanu's Hawaiian heritage, but Keanu is Canadian, and John Wick is very clearly of Russian (Belorussian) extraction. He'd be a Spetznatz if anything.
there are a couple of confusing facts, first Belarusians are Orthodox, not Catholics, Jovanovic is a Serbian surname, and Jordani are not the same as John they took it because it starts with the same two letters, Jordani actually have Greek origins which means a great gift from God

If John was spetsnaz he would mainly use AK type rifles, but he uses AR type rifles instead

That doesn't make sense. He'd just live free.
@M G but there's nothing to suggest he did join the marines. Everyone cites the tattoos, but the tattoos are shared as a social and religious marking by all of his Ruskya Roma people, so clearly they aren't meant to denote marine service.

The way I look at it is that John is literally the embodiment of death. Throughout the movies they refer to him as inhuman things like the Baba Yaga and deaths very emissary.

If we notice we can find that winston shoots john wick at only those specific points ,where the doctor told john wick at the beginning of the movie and those shots were fired to show that he was intending to kill him but the real plan was something else . To overthrow the high table.

2. Winston didn't betray his friend. He had given the hints to John on his arrival on the rooftop on what he's planning. No wonder why he only landed shots on his chest, while he knew that he's wearing bulletproof clothing.

Okay anyone could tell that Winston didn't betray Wick. The main reason's why I say this is because winston told john "I would rather get killed by a friend than an enemy" and in the end he also said "baba yaga" showing that it is their plan to take revenge on high table. Also the receptionist of the continental didn't seem to be much bothered by winston shooting john as he knew that it is their plan to gain trust from the high table.
It's like the "cliff notes" of john wick the series. But seriously, watch the movies, they are fantastic.

Clearly I’m not as attuned to the films as others(didn’t really find the breed of the dogs that important). I will say the video was helpful in understanding wick’s motivations and most importantly, tying the trilogy together.
