Old asuka was a fantastically well made character in a show already full with really well made characters
She was a unstable mess that care about nobody. The rest of the cast were worst whit little to none development except misato. Prefer characters like kensuke and toji over the other overrated cast.

She’s boring as fuck after the first two episodes. And least shinji has SOME sort of development.

I like the fact misato became a leader of her own rag tag team to go up against nerv and battle the angels. Gendo was a psycho that care about nobody as long he got what he want. She became the leader Eva needed to survive and it work. Sadly it came at the cost of her life but it was worth it. Fun fact: Theres a theory saying in the rebuilds we are seeing a different Asuka, this is hinted with their names one is call Asuka Langley Soryou and the other is name Asuka Langley Shikinami, hope this plays a major role in the series as theres no reason to change your character name

There’s a theory i like that suggests the rebuild is to show the audience what they initially wanted and is anno spiting them, because all of the girls have nami in their last name they are essentially the same person. This is shown through the basically zero character development shown by the three main girls. I would go more in depths but there’s so much shit in the theory (as with all eva theories). You could probably search a yt video up on it

I love the art style of older EVA. Not just the characters but the backgrounds, too. All of it had that 90's anime "warmth" to it. I won't deny that in some scenes the characters looked like dolls, tho
90s anime definitely had a different art style than modern anime. Watch any anime from the 90s and any anime from 2023 and you'll see the same thing as with Eva.

Rebuild Asuka: Soulless copy of the original. Written as a tsundere out of obligation and not to establish an interesting character arc. She literally has no reason to be mean to anyone or have a fragile ego. There is no facade to be broken or interesting backstory to make her developed as a character. She is everything wrong with the trope.

NGE's Asuka was the amalgamation of "tomboy" parody, staffs disagreement with Anno's input and Anno's writing. The tsundere archetype wasn't as established and I was shocked as how she made it popular, when she's not a typical "tsundere". First, her relationship with Shinji was complicated and not in a "tsundere" way. Anno wrote her as being attracted to Shinji, but other writers have also mentioned that they have more input on her. Her attempts at romance resembles the modern "copium" or dependence rather than real "romantic interest", but what's the difference anyway. She wanted a pillar to lean on, and when Kaji exposed her and later, didn't reply, she turned to Shinji. They shared a common source of anguish, but can't come to term in peace, which was beautiful. It adhered to the common theme of the series "hedgehog's dilemma". They both realised each other are in pain, but cannot bring themselves to comfort each other. I love that Asuka was so caught up in her own trouble that she never quite connect with Shinji and have any obvious "affection". It contrasted with other prideful, tomboy characters who are somehow hopelessly in love with the protagonist that they are somehow "dere dere". It makes more sense for prideful people to act like Asuka. Yet, behind that pride is insecurity formed by deep trauma. She was an awesome, tragic character.
The new Asuka is, as everyone else had mentioned, a poor imitation of the original with all of the nuances emptied out. Her being just a "tsundere" teenager makes her just another typical rom-com character. The 4th movie speedrunning all of the character developments certainly did not help improve nor explore her character. The troubled teenager that formed an entire archetype is now completely forgettable. I don't hate the "post timeskip Asuka" as much as the 2.0 Asuka, but overall looking at what the remake did to the whole host of characters, it's just disappointing all round. It's quite telling when his long time partners in the "making of" documentary just candidly said that "well it is written by Anno" when asked about the script. They were clearly not impressed, and so were many of the fans of the original, no doubt. I know that Anno from the beginning did not went into the project with a passion, his wife even alluded to the fact that he made them to make money for his other projects. Yes, we are being milked, but the experience of watching Evangelion on copied VHS tape would never leave me for the rest of my life.
Asuka is such an amazing character. I started watching Evangelion just because it was a classic and I wasn’t expecting much. to be honest the fans actually made me go into it expecting it to be a bunch of like waifu bait tsundere shit, and I’m the kind of person who likes watching Ikuhara (who funnily enough is close friends with Anno and the ending of 2.0 is modeled off of Utena) so I was ready to be disappointed. But I was absolutely blown away by Asuka… I genuinely think she is one of the most well written characters in anime. there are so many different interpretations you can make of her and her psychology because of how complex she is
I read an analysis of asuka saying that she looks to Kaji as not only an object of affection but also as a masculine role model. When she moves onto shinji he fails in that aspect and it makes her resent him. I also think he reminds her of herself, representing her insecurities. She isn’t a traditional tsundere at all. The rebuilds really missed this with a whole lot of nothing
