      Thanks so much! Really want to use these videos to teach about the wider context of experimental music, and how new tech relates back to existing ideas. Glad you enjoyed!

    Oval’s ‘Systemisch’ (1994) and '94 Diskont' (1995) both also make fantastic use of purposefully damaged CDs. Both albums are currently available in full on CZcams if you do a search and are well worth a listen.

    I like your case. Those are some serious hinges. I love the raw look. This video is inspiring. I have one of these on the way to me. I've been trying to do these kind of sounds with Morphagene and Clouds and other modules. This totally flew under my radar until the other day. I'm wearing out the mail tracking service. I can't wait. Thanks for the video. I have prepared several tracks to run through the data bender. Drone pads created with multi tracked vocals and multitrack acoustic guitar drones to build chord pads. I can't wait to run my acoustic guitar frippertronics through this module. It's gonna be cool. Thanks man. Great video. Great inspiration. I've watched this three times. Haha!

    During lockdown I first learned of modular through your videos. The aquisition of all of your modules ensued. I created 4 ambient collections in 2020. The last one was awarded Ambient Album of October' by Bandcamp. Happy to see you posting again. Thank you sincerely for everyhting.

    I’ve been watching basically all,of your videos recently as I love your style. Your explanations are so succinct and interesting, even getting a bit academic with this one. You’ve turned me into a Qubit fanboy too, and the Bloom will be at the heart of the system I’m currently planning. Now I have to make room for the data bender too! Please make more content, you’re so so good at it!

    I know this is technically a gear demo, but honestly it'd be super cool if you expanded on that intro section at some point. Always felt strongly about that one Eno quote about recording tech and the fetishization of obsolescence:
    “Whatever you now find weird, ugly, uncomfortable and nasty about a new medium will surely become its signature. CD distortion, the jitteriness of digital video, the crap sound of 8-bit - all of these will be cherished and emulated as soon as they can be avoided. It’s the sound of failure: so much modern art is the sound of things going out of control, of a medium pushing to its limits and breaking apart. The distorted guitar sound is the sound of something too loud for the medium supposed to carry it. The blues singer with the cracked voice is the sound of an emotional cry too powerful for the throat that releases it. The excitement of grainy film, of bleached-out black and white, is the excitement of witnessing events too momentous for the medium assigned to record them.”

  • @wariusgaius
    @wariusgaius Před 3 lety +3

    It’s a real cool module, and I am tempted to get it. But the fact that a dedicated module saves you from the hassle of dealing with failing equipment takes a chunk of the magic away. Because isn’t it the road to the sound more valuable then the sound itself? It is efficient though, when you have kids.

    • @Braunld
      @Braunld Před 3 lety +3

      My thoughts as well. It's sort of like a microwave dinner, instant 'damage' applicator. I'm conflicted about it. Twenty years ago, it took some work, or at least a novel approach, to get these sorts of 'unintentional use' results... not to mention the befuddlement, or disapproving reactions from peers. Now there's a Eurorack module that's designed specifically for those traditionally undesirable / damaged / chaotic effects, or results. The internet / technology has ruined everything! Cot damn these useful tools. *curses cloud*

    Interesting..... broken or malfunctioning devices.
    Someone gave me a Deepak Chopra CD set. (I think he's full of sh**) (see M. Shermer).
    I took a razor blade and made various deep scratches on the face of the CDs..... and depending on the brand of CD Player, it would repeat and glitch randomly.
