Arabian Nights | Choreographed & Directed by Amita Batra | Aladdin

An exploration of the song Arabian Nights from the 2019 Live Action Aladdin in a manner that's choreographically more inclusive than most film and stage interpretations, especially by Disney. The goal is to show an interpretation that is more authentic to the music than allusions to cultural stereotypes such as head bobs, half assed Namastes and unreal belly dancing. Rather than to portray "Arab" or "Indian" culture, however, we are being honest in our own expression to this song and thereby appealing to an aspect of representation. Not to mention the idea that South Asian-inspired movers and creators have what it takes to offer something incredible to the table.
Body language draws from Kathak, contemporary, musical theatre, and simply humanity.
