  • So whilst Cov19 has brought my trainspotting to a halt for the time being so I decided to pass the time by trying out a new series called ‘Revisited’
It will be 5 episodes which will be 5 videos I filmed last year revisiting them eventhough some of you may know already from my premieres I did on them at the time.
The difference this time is instead of the station background of it’s history in the description it will be about how I went about filming them.
So Episode 1 of 5 is from my 3rd visit in 6 months to Didcot Parkway back on June 15th 2019
The original video titled 'Great Western Railway and CrossCountry Trains at Didcot Parkway on June 15th 2019
    • Great Western Railway ...
At the time this was my 3rd attempt filming there after my 1st two times didn’t go according to plan.
The 1st time I filmed at Didcot Parkway was way back 6 months earlier on December 15th 2018 when filming my Christmas Special 2018 there.
Unfortunately was blighted by bad weather of heavy rain and 25mph winds which as a result was limited to filming on the GWML platforms.
The 2nd attempt was over 7 weeks later on February 2nd 2019 which was 2 weeks before I moved from Essex to Devon
The conditions were better but was blighted by crowded platforms and even going a bit too far down platform 2 filming a HST depart which ended up getting a warning from a staff member however I excepted the mistake I made without any fuss and moved on however wasn't good enough
So fast forward to June 15th over 4 months later and well on the day the weather was on and off heavy showers which I ended up get drenched when I was filming at Swindon before heading to Didcot Parkway.
So when I got to Didcot Parkway the weather was a bit overcast to begin with and the showers from Swindon were lurking and did threaten my filming however fortunately this time it was only brief.
Now unlike before I wanted to cover everywhere including the shuttle service to Oxford in this case departing Platform 5 although sometimes they can use Platform 4 with Stopping services from London Paddington using Platform 4 or 5 as well.
And not forgetting the junction for the Cotswolds line used by CrossCountry Trains and GWR services via Oxford.
In the video itself although the overhead wires were up however the IETs could only use them between Didcot Parkway and London Paddington or through Swindon even at the time of filming the line had been electrified to Bristol Parkway with Cardiff Central still in Progress.
So the only time the IETs would switch between Biomode and Electric was either on Platform 2 for the stopping services or after Didcot East Junction where the services from the Cotswolds Line via Oxford would join.
It also turned out that the reason that passing IETs were running in biomode through the station instead of Electric was due to software issues especially with electromagnetic disturbance.
In the original video there was one train I couldn’t identify at the time the 5 car IET from Oxford just before 802007 & 802006 to Weston-super-Mare arrived on Platform 1 however it was determined it was 802003 from Oxford.
So since filming the GWML is now electrified to Cardiff Central which was completed in January 2020 which as a result that the Class 800s and 802s on the fast lines now use electric mode through the station however the only exception is in the 4 mile Severn Tunnel which due to problems with the overhead conductor rails that power the overhead equipment being corroded due to the damp tunnel conditions which the IETs at the moment run in biomode for that section.

RoscoTrain107 It’s the first time I’ve been but I have wanted to go before during HST times.. After the lockdown, if your free an afternoon or whenever we both film, we can collaborate on a few videos of you’d like.

InfinityGeorge8 cool but remember the videos I’m uploading for the next few weeks are not for encouraging trainspotting at all due to cov19.
