  • Michigan herbalist Jim McDonald describes the many benefits of and how to prepare marshmallow (Althaea officinalis). The herb is easy to grow in lots of different types of soil. The leaves, roots, and flowers are all edible and have cooling properties. Marshmallow, a demulcent plant, can be used medicinally to moisten and lubricate, including dry, inflamed skin-and in the digestive system.

    I love the way Jim thinks about plants. Makes so much sense. Also, I find that Marshmallow works much better for the GI Tract than slippery elm.

    Thank you, I enjoy watching you describe the use of plants. Common sense and understandable. I grow Marshmallow, always made capsules. However will make some lozenges now for my grandson, he recently had a kidney stone and it took 2 surgery's to remove it. Not to go into to much detail, He is my shiny star, was born with a very special syndrome, Angelman Syndrome "Clinical", I have raised him since he was 2 months old and he is now 22 years old. I have been giving him herbal concoctions all his life and been using plants as healing most of my life.

    A cold infusion of the root is one of my personal tonic beverages. Just a couple quarts a month soothe and support my dry constitution - inside and out, especially during the dry New England winters. And more than a few folks with longstanding, chronic digestive challenges have realized relief and re-harmonizing with a cold infusion. I think I brew up a quart today. Thanks Jim and HerbTV for the Good info and inspiration!

    Great video! I had some marshmallow root sitting in my cupboard for weeks. I didn't quite know how to incorporate a cold infusion into my daily routine. I like my hot teas. I drink a lot of water and the tip he gave about adding some of the infusion into your daily drinking water is brilliant!

    Coincidentally I’ve been drinking marshmallow root tea today for a sore throat. I’ve used it before and it works!
    I am a somewhat constitutionally dry person so I am going to try marshmallow on a daily basis and see if it helps moisten my tissues. ~ Thank you for another great video. - peace

    Hi , and thank you for this video. I know this may sound silly, but I was wondering whether there are any possible benefits of smoking dried marshmallow leaves? I do realise that regardless of what it is, smoking anything must have plenty of negative effects which would ultimately outweigh any benefits, but I am still curious if there Are any benefits of such practice at all

    Can marshmallow root grow in a wooded area or a woods?

    • @HerbTV
      @HerbTV  Před 2 lety +1

      The plant grows best in moist, heavy soil in full sunlight. Partial sunlight is OK, but as they can get fairly tall, make sure they don't crowd out other plants close by.
