- With no state, no public amenities, no bank system, a scarce army, an under-equipped police force, and almost daily attacks, the majority of Somalia is completely out of government control. Despite the presence of an international African army, AMISOM, the country lives under the rule of armed Islamists who take orders from Al Qaeda.
Every year, the international community spends billions on aid, and yet the country is weaker than ever. Rather than benefiting citizens, the majority of international aid money is tied up in astronomical security costs, or is embezzled by a corrupt political class. It is estimated that less than 20% of aid money actually reaches its intended recipients.
With unprecedented access, our team was able to spend 16 days filming in the capital, Mogadishu, and its surrounding areas. This film attempts to understand how this country, under control of one of the strongest Islamist groups in the world, remains in chaos.

This was documented along time ago somewhere around 2015 when Mogadishu was at its lowest, since then it has improved significantly. I currently live in Mugadishu. No corrupt police. Al shabab no longer exists in the capital city. And soon we’ll get rid of them. Please don’t mislead people with 10 years old documentary.
The mayor was killed in 2019 so it’s a little old considering it’s supposed to be about currant affairs. The article I read it in on mentioned the killer having connections to Al Shabab. I hope it has improved since 2019, but I’ve noticed this channel has a habit of churning out old documentaries.
@@rebekahtaylor6142 Yes honestly, Somalia is has grown tremendously in terms of safety and the economy, I can attest to this as my family have traveled there this past summer. They concluded the safety and the people along with the beaches were amazing. The terrorist were driven out of major cities. Somalia has made great progress over the last couple years and I only hope the country can continue to develop - Cheers from the US!

Al-Shabaab still exists in Mogadishu, that's not the fault of Somalia, but it is how it is. In June 2023 Al-Shabaab attacked a hotel, they aren't gone.
