      I replaced my front cover gasket on my 302 in my Mustang and I used the bolt to press the balancer back on. It went on fairly easily.

      I'd rather use the installation tool.... because beating it with a hammer will do internal damage to the engine.

    Just want to say thanks for these vids. I had to pull my drivetrain out of my 72 C10 for a leaking freeze plug behind the flywheel, these vids are making it easy to put things back together correctly.

    This will be my first remove and replace on my 68 C20 truck. Started making a chirping sound. Ran the engine with no belts to find the noise and it was the HB.

    Sometimes they go in so far, (the bolt) you can get a wrench around it so go to the hardware store get some big washers it helps, good video Im doing my Pontiac this helps

    Knew a guy that tried to get the balancer on a sbc 283 with the balancer bolt and striped the threads he ended up haveing to pull the crankshaft and bring it in the shop to have us rethread it the cost was way more than just buying the tool. CastleVania....man that brings back memories Simon Belmont with the whip battleing monsters ah the Nintendo days,,good times!

      Sometimes not spending a bit of money on the right tool or part can cost you a lot more in the long run. I love this shirt. I wish I still had my Nintendo. I do have my SNES so that's pretty cool.

    THANKS, I already put my Summit Racing damper on my 350 1980 corvette build but I am going back to the parts store to rent the installer again. I need to pull it out and make those marks to be sure its bottomed out. It has kept me up at nite...LOL good video! Wiill like and subscribe! I also like that you are mostly GM but have Ford vids too, I too am a mustang/chevy dude...It's all USA and All good!

    Great video. Perhaps a few dumb newbie questions: 1) when you put the new balancer on, will the "0" mark on this balancer exactly "meet" the Timing tab arrow mark? 2) If is does not align up, what should I do, because if I now find true TDC, will I have to mark it on the new balancer and therefore, "ruin" that neat "degrees ruler" on the new balancer? Thanks

    Working on a big block I replaced my Harmonic balancer with a Summit Racing® Bracket Racer SFI, and when installing it when it seemed to be at the end, and then the tool backed it self out. Everything I have looked at, this does not happen. They Show it getting to the point were you can not turn it any further and you know your done. Any ideas, thank you for any help.

    Is it external balance or internal balance .my 496 Chevy big block is internal balanced so it has to be 0 balance

    When I installed the same harmonic balancer on my 454 the belts on the pulleys wouldn't line up. Any suggestions on what the problem may be?

      it either isn't seated all the way or its a completely different height than your old balancer.
      did you happen to lay them side by side on your work bench and visually compare them BEFORE installing it?

    Never beat on with a hammer. You can easily damage the thrust bearing!

    Why doesn't anyone ever finish the job. I have watched a ton of clips where they all show how to get the pulley on but not finish the install with the crankshaft bolt. How to stop the engine from turning so you can tighten the bolt to its torque spec?

    Press it on ALWAYS!! Rent tool at Autozone or local automotive store if you don't own one. $75 removal and install tool.

      if you have the funds and are going higher horsepower buy new,if its a refresh and the old one looks ok
      and you just cruise then go with the old one,just examine it closely first for damage or excessive wear.

    Definitely pressing on with a tool the hammer and wood is caveman style and you risk damaging the crankshaft.

      Because you run the risk of stripping the threads in the crankshaft snout.

      No biggie, crank it on till it starts spinning, then give it a few more hard and qick turns and ur good.
