Knoxville is a city in and the county seat of Knox County in the U.S. state of Tennessee.[16] As of July 1, 2019, Knoxville's population was 187,603, making it the largest city in the East Tennessee Grand Division, and the state's overall third largest city after Nashville and Memphis.[18] Knoxville is the principal city of the Knoxville Metropolitan Statistical Area, which had an estimated population of 869,046 in 2019.
First settled in 1786, Knoxville was the first capital of Tennessee. The city struggled with geographic isolation throughout the early 19th century. The arrival of the railroad in 1855 led to an economic boom. During the Civil War, the city was bitterly divided over the secession issue, and was occupied alternately by both Confederate and Union armies. Following the war, Knoxville grew rapidly as a major wholesaling and manufacturing center. The city's economy stagnated after the 1920s as the manufacturing sector collapsed, the downtown area declined and city leaders became entrenched in highly partisan political fights. Hosting the 1982 World's Fair helped reinvigorate the city,[20] and revitalization initiatives by city leaders and private developers have had major successes in spurring growth in the city, especially the downtown area.
Knoxville is the home of the flagship campus of the University of Tennessee, whose sports teams, the Tennessee Volunteers, are popular in the surrounding area. Knoxville is also home to the headquarters of the Tennessee Valley Authority, the Tennessee Supreme Court's courthouse for East Tennessee, and the corporate headquarters of several national and regional companies. As one of the largest cities in the Appalachian region, Knoxville has positioned itself in recent years as a repository of Appalachian culture and is one of the gateways to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
The first thing I noticed as you are driving in the downtown area is there is NO TRASH AND NO TENT CITIES. Very well kept up area and I love seeing this!
Go to southeast Knox and check out the crackhead neighborhoods. Bars on all gas station windows, cops everywhere, prostitutes, and drugs galore. I lived there for over a year before I finally got out. I assure you my friend, Knoxville is not all nice and neat.

I've been to nearby Gatlinburg several times during summer vacation! It has some of the best scenery east of the Mississippi!

Still the best sceneries
I know family members of mine moved to Knoxville from Phoenix (who moved with the snowbird migration there) to get a break from the excessive heat of Arizona and the monsoons, where the rain isn’t even cooling because of how hot it is in AZ during the summer. They were more than willing to take the trade offs (cooler winters, spring allergies), and the best part: home prices and unemployment are lower there than in Phoenix, along with commute times being shorter an being less crowded than Phoenix.
The guy at 22:08 looks like he literally walks into another dimension right before our eyes!

I live in Knoxville and it's a lovely City .. Market Square/ Gay Street has a beautiful site and vibe with plenty of shops and restaurants..
I live in south Knoxville...it has its ups and downs. Ups...urban wilderness, market square, Old City, lots of good outdoor activity close by. Dirt bike woods riding 45 minutes away, excellent curvy roads all over for my street bike. Good clean lakes and rivers...
Downs...high property crime and violent crime has exploded. Homeless wondering around aimlessly and harassing people in some areas. Bad mix of older and younger drivers resulting in crazy driving situations.

Moving to Knoxville from Orange County, CA at the end of October. SOOOOOO looking forward to it!
But Orange County has been increasingly blessed as a pedal-to-the-metal diversity-on-steroids success story. Why would you wish to leave a constantly improving "diversity is our strength" heaven?
I lived in Knoxville for 28 years and left because the weather and allergies are both bad! 6 months of gray, gloomy, rainy, and cold weather is just to much!
I justt moved from Knoxville I lived there 14 years. Nice place to be.

I love seeing the city of Knoxville. We have never been through the streets there. I did notice at one of the red lights you stopped at man walked across the road and disappeared. I don't know if your camera stopped at that time or what. It was a few minutes before you get to the World's Fair Park.

@Milage Mike: Wish you'd do a follow-up video - where, instead of turning off, you'd follow S. Gay Street down across the Gay Street Bridge over the Tennessee River into South Knoxville. There are some lovely, old neighborhoods down, back, in there. My grandmother ( my father's mother ) used to live on Island Home Boulevard, in the historic Island Home Park subdivision ( homes built there 19- teens - 1930s. )
Good to know. If I come back through I might check it out and do a South Knoxville video.

I will always remember, fondly, the drive over the Gay Street Bridge, then - back in the day - you had to make a couple of turns to loop around behind the old East Tennessee Baptist Hospital* ( where I was born, ) and get on the street that runs parallel to the Tennessee River, then you drove straight for ( seemingly ) a LONG ways with the river close on your left and high buildings on your right, then you turned right, then left on to Island Home Blvd. Island Home Blvd. runs a good number of blocks ( although not always interrupted by side streets at each block end ) until it ends ( right side, "down" side ends, but you could cross over to left "up" side there ) at the gates of the Tennessee School for the Deaf.
*Unfortunately closed, then later torn down, 2014.
@@MileageMikeTravels Island Home also has a school for the deaf where students live on campus. Not sure about now but years ago you could take a sign language class at no charge, and I did for a couple years.
@@AmericanOne9621 Yep. See my post ( under OTHER username of mine - Robert C., ) above, about that the gates of the Tennessee School for the Deaf are right at the end of Island Home Blvd.
My ( now the late ) father and I used to go down there and pick up ( ?- hickory ) nuts off the ground that had fallen in profusion off the trees. ( This was long before such schools had to be SO security aware. Now there's a security gate with a guard shack with a security guard. Was NOT that way when I was a kid. *Sigh* )
Also - did NOT know they ever offered a sign language course. That's cool that they did. Maybe that was later. [ My family moved from Knoxville down to the metro Atlanta, Georgia area when I was about 14 ( would have been about 1972. ) Although my ( late ) grandmother ( my father's mother ) continued living in her house on Island Home Blvd., about a block and 1/2 up from the Tennessee School for the Deaf, for many years after that. ]

COVID cancelled our scheduled April 2020 trip from DC metro to see *both* places as picks for budget retirement. I like Johnson City being so close to the hills to its east.
My G*d, Knoxville looks perfect in so many ways -- (ideal size, retention of many classic architecture buildings).
Did it not stand out for you in beauty and excellence compared to other NC/TN/VA small cities?
@@readwriter Yeah between Johnson City, Knoxville, Asheville, and Roanoke, VA I'd take Knoxville overall. It's the largest of them and has more of the beautiful scenery close by. Plus Gatlinburg and Great Smoky Mountains National Park are in the area.
