    You can now preorder the Kurzgesagt Immune System book! “IMMUNE - A Journey into the Mysterious System That Keeps You Alive”: kgs.link/ImmuneBook
    IMMUNE is a fascinating and fun journey through your own body, where we’ll be exploring mystery organs, murder universities, your enemies from viruses, bacteria and cancer (and how your immune system might have killed a cancer cell while you were reading the last few sentences) and the incredibly beautiful and amazing parts, cells and systems that keep you alive. After reading it you should not only gain a new appreciation for your own body but also experience disease differently. Also 45 illustrated pages by the Kurzgesagt team make the book very pretty.

    It's very difficult to put in words how motivating this is for me as a med student who's lost lots of my initial drive because of my university's covid coping mechanisms. The complementary system was an especially hard lesson for me to understand considering the absurd amount of random letters and numbers I've had to memorize. What's the difference between an old man and a baby? what if we could transfer a person's brain to someone younger than him? if each beginning has an end, can we extend the time between death and right now by transferring our brains to someone else instead of finding immortality?

    Presumably you've already thought of this, but I'm curious to see a video on what happens when the immune system is overwhelmed and the cut becomes majorly infected and you have take antibiotics, that would be really interesting

    • @cockatoo010
      @cockatoo010 Před rokem +24

      Most common antibiotics are not bactericidal, but bacteriostatic, this means that they don't kill bacteria, but they prevent them from reproducing. In the end the infection will be taken care of by the immune system but the presence of antibiotics is a massive help.
      This is also why you don't interrupt your antibiotic treatment as soon as you feel better, if you do, you are allowing the static bacterial population to once again begin reproducing and this will hurt your immune systems chances. Even more because when you feel bad and restart the antibiotics, the bacteria will have adapted and developed resistance!
      I do agree that this would be a good addition to the immunology series from this channel!

I just cranked out a slightly above-mediocre paper about how the complement system is activated by drinking alcohol and contributes to alcoholic liver disease (it basically does the same things it does to the bacteria in this video but to liver cells instead). Thanks Kurzgesagt for the inspiration!

    Excellent! NP student refreshing the immune system. This is the best explanation of a very complex system. Starting advanced pathophysiology this week and after watching your videos and then reading my very confusing textbook cleared the cobwebs.

    They should make an rts game based on the immune system, bacteria, and viruses.
    Like the viruses are slow and sneaky, the bacteria can strike hard and fast but take time to adapt, but the immune system is the reverse of bacteria

      theres one where you play AS a bacteria or virus, but its more about infecting the world on a large scale and not about the small battles that occur within bodies

      Well for highschool biology I did make a simple simulation game of the immune system
      where the player could do things like add cells of the few types I included and viruses
      and if you were able to start with a good balance and a bit of luck it was reasonably fun to watch the battle between the b-cells and antibodies against the viruses
