स्वामी दयानन्द सरस्वती जी का प्रमुख उद्देश्य था कि शिक्षा प्रणाली के साथ-साथ विद्यार्थी के व्यक्तित्व का निर्माण भी होना चाहिए । स्व किताबों का चुनाव करते हुए समय विशेष की पहचान करना क्योंकि शिक्षा का मुख्य उद्देश्य बालकों के व्यक्तित्व का पूर्ण विकास करना है।स्वामी जी ने गरिमा पर अत्यन्त बल दिया है । ब्रह्मचर्य व्रत ग्रहण कर विद्याभ्यास करना इसी प्रयोजन को सिद्ध करता है। उनके अनुसार सद्गुणों से विभूषित मनुष्य ही अपने समाज का कल्याण कर समता है । शिक्षा का उद्देश्य मानव में सभ्यता, सदाचार, परोपकार, आदि गुणों का विकास करना है।
