  • This is a short review of the DriftMotion short shifter and R154 transmission rebuild. After using a 25+ year old tranny and over 500 HP, my trans was starting to grind and having difficulty engaging into gear.

I also have this short shifter. What I was finding is when I use the large rubber boot that you recommend using to keep the heat down, I get interference with the dash console. It drives fine, but when I hit the brakes in first gear , it will pop out of gear. I have it set on the medium throw though, so that makes a difference. What I may do is delete the large rubber boot and go with the "intermediate" one that fits the short shifter shaft better and the one that comes with the short shifter and see if I get any better results.

Are you using the R154 in a MK3 Supra or different setup? Since the shifter is shorter it takes more effort to to get it into gear properly. The shorter it is the more difficult it is to engage. Let me know what your results are.

Yes, my setup is a MK3 Supra with R154. I’m 90% sure it’s because of the rubber binding. If I feel behind it is very bunched up against the center dash piece. I switched back to the stock shift to see if it was possibly the transmission but it’s shifting great with stock shifter. No popping out of gear.

So I reinstalled my short shifter (using Medium throw again). What I did this time was I removed all the stock rubber insulation off of the stock shifter, which is a bit of a pain, but greasing it up helped. There are four pieces of rubber insulation. I did NOT use the rubber insulator that came with the DM short shifter. I can report that it no longer pops out of gear when hitting the brakes while I'm in first gear. It also seems a bit quieter than before as well. The only time it's a bit loud is when I do a hard pull I get a rattling sound. I think the spring that is on the stock shifter helps to dampen the vibration / rattling sound but I can't think of any way to incorporate the spring. Hope this helps someone!
Also I can report I don't get any heat issues, however, I'm in Canada, and a hot day here is not nearly as hot as in the southern USA.
