Thank You for getting straight to the point smartly and quickly!
No problem.
People who have published books through prints and reprints may not understand the concept of KDP. This video definitely helps out with that! Thank you so much!
Unique take, Jeremiah. I'm glad you found it helpful. Thanks for your comment.

Wow, thank you! Thanks for the amazing comment. It made my day!
I can't wait for this process, particularly when it comes to the printed copy!!! đ But right now I'm only on step #1 with getting my manuscript edited. đźâđš A deeply crucial step, I know. But once I can hold a physical copy of my book, I'm gonna be on cloud 9, wholeheartedly and emphatically.
You got this! And, guess what??? The excitement NEVER goes away with each new release. I've published over 50 books since 2014 and EVERY single print book I hold is a feeling of joy. The best way to describe it is that child-like enthusiasm I had on Christmas when I would go to open presents. I was always pretty sleuthy and had a general idea of what I was getting. But, it never diminished the feeling of actually holding it, owning it, and enjoying it in my own way. It's that feeling, every time.
I'm looking forward to hearing what you think of your first book. I recommend if you have the funds, test out a few different print on demand companies. See what you like best. Reedsy did a fantastic article about it this month: blog.reedsy.com/print-on-demand-books/
In the article, they mentioned a new option to me called BookVault. And, they seemed to get good marks. The only limitation I saw was distribution was to the UK and a "limited expansion plan." I'm still game to check them out because Reedsy said the quality of BookVault as "very good" compared to KDP with a "good" rating.
For the record, KDP print is actually pretty good.
Well, enjoy! And, feel free to join our Discord community. That'd be a great place to share your experience and ask questions, should they arise.
At last I saw the book and especially cover good series Dale thank you so much. Now I have some ideas of what a good cover is like

Thanks Dale! You're an awesome teacher!

Thank you!! A lot of these videos are 30+ minutes and I just don't have time for that. Thank you for being succinct!!!
You are so welcome! And, I agree, no one has time for that.
Thanks Dale, I have lots to learn and this helped a ton.
Great to hear! Keep at it.
This was very helpful, I;am planning to publish my book soon! Thank you!
You're so welcome!
I'm sincerely grateful sir. Thanks for your enlightenment.
You are very welcome!
A HUGE thank you. I followed your advice from another one of your videos, to use more than one word in the key word section and BAM it worked like magic. I am a rule follower and without your sage advice, I would have limited myself to one word per slot (actually I had one word in each slot, then I saw your video and went back and updated) THANK YOU!!
Yeah, a lot of newbie publishers think keyword means one word. I made the mistake too. Iâm glad we cleared it up and you were able to get your book more discoverable.
Thanks Dale. I am looking forward to uploading my books with your great counsel. Blessing
As always, very informative. I anticipate publishing in December and I know Iâll be referencing this again and again until that date!
Thanks, Dale! Iâll be sharing this with some self-publishing Facebook followers!

Hi Dale, Your informational videos are awesome especially for new authors. I have a question, do you need a new ISBN number assigned for an e-book and then a different one for your paperback? Or do you use the same one for both. Thank you
Thanks, Sue, I appreciate the kind words. Yes, you need a different ISBN for each version. You cannot use the same one.
@@DaleLRoberts Hi, Dale: I see you said one for each version ebook and paperback with Kindle Publishing. So does that mean we have to purchase two separate ISBN numbers? Thank you
Yes
Hiya Dale! Thank you so much for this video! I have a question; when you select a free ISBN from KDP, is a barcode automatically added to the back of your book in the standard manner as a regular print book or do you have to add a barcode to your cover yourself? Also, is it possible to adjust the dimensions of your cover so that the spine design aligns up with the spine of your print book, or is this done automatically too? Please let me know, Thank You!
For print books, they will add the barcode for you. You can do it yourself, but it's much easier to let them do it.
For eBooks, you only need the front cover. For print, you'll need to grab a template and add the spine and back cover. - kdp.amazon.com/cover-calculator
Thanks Iâll keep up Iâm dropping my first book soon
Congrats! I wish you all the best!
Hi Dale, thank you very much for all your input! I'm just at the final stage of submitting my book, and I'm running into lots of... let's say: shortcomings of the kdp interface. For example, I want a format that's common in the UK, but not a default option on kdp. Sure enough, I was able to set up my desired format, yet then I realize there's no cover template according to my dimension. Now, I realize that for the template, you hack in the page count to determine the thickness. Since I don't have this option, I'm forced to use a template for other dimension. I'm in the graphic design business and have no problem adapting stuff, yet what kdp spits out when I upload my files is pure bonkers. For example, in the proof process, it tells me the desired resolution is something like 9000x6000 - which goes totally awry when followed. Now, I don't want to bore you with the full story or the myriads of other issues unrelated to the cover or even ask you to help out (I fixed it, finally. everything's looking good so far...), but what I would really love to see on your channel is a more in-depth look into all the quirks and stumble stones that one likely encounters when you have one or two wishes that are not a default option, as I find that kdp lets you down in a BIG way. I started to dig deeper into your playlists... but yeah.
Anyhoo, I'm still totally stoked and utmost thankful for the insights you provide. Keep it comin ;-)))
Hey, thanks for the detailed share. I know my back log of videos is deep. I have quite a few videos about covers. If you have a specific question, fire it off and I'll do my best to cover it now or in a future video.

@Self-Publishing with Dale Thank you Dale. I will be joining on KDP soon. Question: The ebook requires its own ISBN but does not require a bar code like the paperback, correct?
Correct. đ
Thanks!
You got it!
Great content
Thanks!
Great job! so much info in such little time. Question, what do you mean by, "Below the dollar"?
So, $8.99 (as opposed to $9). Or, $14.99. Or, $99.99. It's based on some case study from years past. Sadly, I've long since lost the source article, so I'll have to be anecdotal for now. haha I hope that helps.
Hi Dale! Great tips! I'm getting ready to publish a children's book. I was wondering on the bleed/no bleed section - I would want to select bleed right because I want the whole page to be covered in the illustration? Also, did you set aside a page in your children's books for a legal page (i.e. like a copyright notice page). Lastly, what is the resolution required when uploading illustrations to your KDP or when you put it together as a full manuscript. I just want to do this correctly the first time! Thanks sir!
Thanks!
Correct. You want to select bleed.
Yes, I set aside a page after the title page for legalese.
300dpi
@@DaleLRoberts thank you!
Excellent! Do you add hyperlinks to your ebook? And, do you recommend my illustrator place my isbn with barcode on the back of my book? Or, is there an upload area on Kdp to place the bowker barcode image? I am concerned that Kdp will cover up certain art work. And finally, when you upload the cover do you also include the back cover jacket as well as one file? Thank you so much
Yes, I use hyperlinks in my ebooks. Yes, you can have your illustrator do it, but you don't have to. There is a space where you input your ISBN during the publishing process. If there is not already a barcode on your cover, KDP will add one for you. I would advise you not put any important artwork in the lower right corner of your back cover.
Yes, the whole cover should be in one PDF, front, back, and spine. You can generate a template to use here - kdp.amazon.com/en_US/cover-templates
This will also be helpful if you do decide to have your illustrator place your barcode.
@@DaleLRoberts Thank you Dale. I looked at the template link you sent, and was wondering if I place the barcode in a different spot is that acceptable? Is the template just for those that will have Kdp generate the bar code?
@@metalpractor5150 no, you must place it there if you use most print on demand services.
How far in advance to your actual publishing date can you select "pre-order"? Your videos are so helpful Dale! Thank you!
One year.
Wow thanks, I didnt realize Amazon offered to print paperback that is a game changer
Well, I'm about to blow your mind, because I have a more recent video covering how to publish ebook, paperback AND hardcover through KDP: czcams.com/video/oSe3mTdZdSI/video.html
Hi Dle, Thank you so much for the video. It was very Helpful. My question is should I publish both e-book and Paperback format for the same content. I actually have a journal ready to publish and this video has given me this doubt.
You're welcome. Thanks for the kind words.
If you're publishing a journal, there's no reason to publish it in eBook format.
For regular fiction and non-fiction books, you would publish in both formats.
Hey Dale, Thanks for the information. It is really helpful. One question though, for my ebook, I have an ISBN purchased but for the "publisher" section, do I put my personal LLC there if I want my LLC to publish the book?
You can put whatever you like there. Sometimes it's easier to create a publisher brand to promote your books rather than creating branding of each individual book. If it fits to use your LLC, then you can use that as well. It's really up to you.
@@DaleLRoberts thanks again for the information đ
Do I need to register the publishing company brand separately from my LLC? Ex if my business is ABC fashions and I begin ABC fashions publishing, do I need a whole new business registration for the publishing arm of the LLC? Thanks. I just came across your channel and it is awesome đ
awesome video
Thanks!
Hey Dale - GREAT VIDEO - especially for me, a new, ebook author/publisher. Now about the foreign pricing. My books will all be $2.99 - the series compilation will be $6.99. Can u put up a chart converting US dollars to the top foreign markets you showed in this video? It will just make things so much quicker. (Iâm just looking for a âshortcutâ instead of Googling it!) (-: Keep up the great work!
I didn't use any chart in this video. That is a screen you'll work through during the publishing process in KDP. To see anything closer and for longer, pause the video!
Hi is it best to create a new Amazon account that is tied to my business checking account & my llc since the book will go under my llc? Or is it best to do so with my regular shopping Amazon account that I use? I want to do this for my 1st childrenâs book
You don't have to ask a question twice. I answer all comments, especially one of this nature.
So, what I said in the other comment:
That's 100% up to you. But, it probably is a good idea to have your KDP account associated with your business. Just don't open two accounts. If you have your KDP account currently listed under your personal info, you can probably ask them to switch it to your business. Reach out to support through the Contact Us link in the bottom of your KDP dashboard.
Oh man, I could have put this in my book for a tutorial. I can slip it into my next update. It can go right into the paperback though. I haven't uploaded that, gotta wait until preorder is over.
Wonderful! Thanks a million, buddy. Yeah, it was a challenge to shoot and edit this video.
@@DaleLRoberts No problem, anything for you. I'll slip it into the eBook before it goes live. You're already in there with your tips, so the audience will know you already. I haven't formatted the paperback yet, so getting it in there is no issue.
Kevin Maguire awesome! Again, thank you.
Merci !!!
Itâs my pleasure! Thanks for watching and commenting.
Aloha again Dale, do you have videos on Amazon's printing costs for standard color printing? I ask because my Diet book has 2 versions for final edit - One with 100 Photos - The other with 200 Photos - Does it matter how many photos are on with Basic color printing? Do you recommend I use the one with 100 Photos and NOT the one with 200 photos and that will save me, or that does not matter? Please advise and recommend which videos to watch on this. Thanks again, ALOHA!!!
Aloha! I don't currently have a video on this, but KDP lays it out pretty well here - kdp.amazon.com/en_US/help/topic/G201834340
I'm going to go try this but my book is a photo book mostly, with black pages/background. The word pages with white background. I hope when I upload the pdf it recognises that. Since I don't see color option
There is an option for color, but you have to choose white paper to use it.
Hey Dale! My book is complete and copywritten. Should I now do my book cover or hire an editor? Which one first? Thanks! Great vids bro! Learning alot!
I'd say editor. You can get your book cover done when you're close to being ready to publish. Thanks for the kind words!
@@DaleLRoberts Great! Thanks so much...!
If you upload an eBook with equal margins, then select print book, does the process automatically convert the equal margins of the eBook, to left and right pages of a print book for the binding? Cheers
Sadly, no.

I used a screen recorder in Camtasia.
Finally!!! Someone who gets to the point while answering all my questions!
Will you marry me? Think of the royalties we could make đđđđ
haha THIS is comment of the day! Sadly, my wife wouldn't be too keen on me marrying somebody else. And, yes, I try to get right to the point in my videos. I used to mess around and do all these tactics CZcams experts told me to do. Then, I threw all their advice out and just made a video that I would want to watch. So glad you enjoyed it! Stay tuned for more like it!
thanks so much for this helpful walkthrough of the process ! i have a question : iâm currently a high schooler , and wanted to publish my childrenâs book . do i necessarily NEED to have publishing rights for that section ? or could i just use the public domain work option , and what would that entail ? thank you so much !
If you create the work, you own the publishing rights. The only time you need publishing rights is when someone else produces the work for you or someone else created the work (i.e., public domain) a long time ago. If you choose the public domain option, keep in mind, they reserve the right to deny your book. AND, you get half as much money per sale than normal books.
@@DaleLRoberts oh i see, thank you for your response. so basically i could click the publishing rights option upon the completion of my book ? also , does this mean i wouldn't necessarily need to go through all the legal stuff to register it with a copyright or something ?
This really helps. I don't think KDP should hold my hand. But tutorials would be nice.
Oh, they've got a great free course called KDP Jumpstart. The video tutorials are succinct and clear. They cover ebooks and paperbacks. I'm not sure if they've covered hardbacks yet. I recommend giving it a look.
Thank you so much for this step by step guide, being a creative writer with dyslexia.these videos are very helpful..
One question if the book has copyrights once we upload it into the KDP why would we need digital rights management to protect the Ebook?
And when you say he careful when you click into that, you sounded like it was something to beware of?
Can you explain.further why we must be careful when clicking that service?
đ
I'm glad you find my videos helpful.
DRM is just an added layer of protection against piracy. It simply makes it more difficult for your book files from Amazon to be shared and sold in nefarious ways.
It's just as I said in the video. Once you select DRM to be added to your title, you can't remove it later.
There is a growing audience of readers who feel like they are being prevented from truly owning the book if it has DRM enabled. It's just a note of caution. Don't overthink it.
Here, Nikki, I answered your question live on the air. Watch about 10 minutes in. czcams.com/video/zZ_h3h02RIk/video.html
If I want to publish an Ebook only with KDP is that possible ? Or do I have to also do a print version as youâve shown in this video?
The print version is not required. You can just publish an eBook.
Great videođ
Thanks! đ
@@DaleLRoberts Your welcome.
Hi Dale, AMAZING VIDEO đ„ Could you please explain to me the âother marketplaceâ price should be below $1. I donât understand it. Thank you.
Instead of $5, do $4.99. Instead of $10.34, charge $9.99 or $10.99.
Thank you so so much
Can you make a video about the conditions of creating the interior and the cover, because when I put my book with word format, it seems horrible on Amazon.
For eBooks, the formatting is quite simple and can be done with Word. Don't do anything too complicated. Basic formatting and fonts, page breaks after front matter and chapters, H1 for chapter headings, insert clickable TOC.
Print is a lot more complicated. If you can't do it yourself. Hire someone on Fiverr. You can find more in-depth how-to stuff in my free beginner course - dalelinks.com/diyfree
Hope that helps!
When you do your printed hard copy, do you pay to have it printed or do they take as they sell?
They take the printing cost out of your royalties.

That video has all the answers you need about publishing public domain books.
Whatâs the difference between the copyright and the public option? Do you need to do a formal US copyright to select that?
What do you mean by "public option". A formal copyright is not required for self-publishing.
@@DaleLRoberts ohh ok I was talking about the publishing rights section where you select copyright or public domain. I was thinking you need a formal copyright to click the first one but I guess not thank you for clarifying đ
I have an Illustated cover which I did myself on the front of my books, how would I know if the cover is adequate?
Do you have to have a certain cover for them to print your book?
And do I have to have a design for the back of the book?
I just read one of your comments and the trouble he had with the cover, which sounded very complicated to say the least. đ
You'll based on the other covers in your niche. Place your book among the top 20 books for your category. Does it match? If so, great! If not, fix it.
Yes, a book cover. Haha They have specific guidelines you need to follow. Just Google it up.
Yes, you need to design the back, front and spine for a print cover.
It was suggested to me that I research each country's typical book pricing because a book that sells for say 3 dollars in the USA would typically sell for 50-75% more in Australia, for example, even with the currency conversion. You might be leaving money on the table if citizens of say Australia, or the EU are accustomed to paying more than 3 dollars US for an Amazon book.
That's a good way to look at it.
Hi Dale, I have a question. Once it's published with KDP, can you still sell it elsewhere in an ebook format? If so what would you say are the best platforms for selling an ebook format that is more detailed in terms of graphics and pictures within the book? Thanks, Subscribed!
So long as you don't enroll that ebook in KDP Select, you can go everywhere. I did a video recently of the best self-publishing platforms that could help you: czcams.com/video/H6kVCEKO41Y/video.html
@@DaleLRoberts Nice one! Thanks for replying đ
OMG THANKYOU SO MUCH FOR THIS. I was lost lol. When I go to upload my manuscript, how do I take it from Google docs and upload it? I don't have the script as a file on my computer.
Hit File, highlight Download in the drop down, then click EPUB Publication. Thatâll be the file you upload. đđ„đ
@@DaleLRoberts Question, whenever I downloaded it, and went to open it, the file wouldn't open and continues to do so. It mentioned something of needing an app to support epub. Do you know what that is about? When I clicked upload manuscript it said it couldn't convert my html file into Kindle format.
@@ilovewater7595 yeah, youâll need an app that can read the file. I recommend opening it with Calibre. Itâs free software and Iâve used it time and again. If you have Mac, it should open it automatically in the Apple Books app.
@@DaleLRoberts I'm still having trouble lol I'm sorry. I have windows 10 Hp and it says I must switch from S mode but cannot switch back if I want to use calibre. The size is going to depend on the age the book is intended for. Since it's only 14 pages, I'm assuming it's for early childhood. The most popular size for that age is 8.5x8.5.
KDP has a print book page minimum of like 24 pages. You're going to need to contact them directly for help.
Do you have to have your book registered in the U.S Copyright office to select publishing rights?
No.
Hi dale I hv uploaded my book on Kindle Amazon ebook and paperback both but how the book ll be Live what's the exact time 4 Live
There is no exact time. Amazon advises within 72 hours. It almost never takes that long.
Hello,
Do I have to publish in order to get arc copies (not proofs) on Amazon. If so, how do I do this?
You can send ARC copies out as PDFs.
Hi, thanks for this. Does anyone know how I can claim the publishing rights/copyright for my book before publishing? Thanks.
If you wish to register a copyright for your book and you're in the U.S., visit copyright.gov.
If you're outside of the U.S., you'll need to Google how to do this in your country.
@@DaleLRoberts Thanks for the reply Dale, love your videos. I`m actually in Japan!
I saw the video. Dale, I haven't yet created a cover for my book. How to do I go about creating one through Amazon?
I don't recommend creating one through Amazon. They always look crappy. Hire it out. I highly recommend this designer - dalelinks.com/oliviaprodesign
Thank you, please can I use one one isbn for one book in 5 published platform
Yes. But, that ISBN will only work for one version of your book across all those platforms. Meaning, when you assign the ISBN to your paperback, it can ONLY be used for the paperback. However, if you use the free-assigned ISBN from Amazon, you can only use it on Amazon, nowhere else.
Question. So I'm in the final steps of finishing my manuscript. Just doing some grouping, as its a self help book written in poetry about a few of life's struggles. I plan to have font and size changed throughout, to fill the pages properly. So do I send the edited version only to kdp, or the edited + font to them.
Well, thatâs going to be tricky because if you want specific fonts, you wonât be able to used reflowable layouts. Meaning, youâll need a fixed layout ebook, think like a PDF more than an ebook. Most people using e readers will find it more of a chore to read that way.
However, if youâre doing it for the sake of the art, go for it. Just remember, reflowable content allows the reader to change font sizes and types in an ereader. That means whatever you create could be lost right when they go to read.
Is it possible? Sure, but again, itâll be a fixed layout ebook.
@@DaleLRoberts okay. That makes sense. Would it be possible to submit two manuscripts - of the same book - one specifically for ebooks & one intended more as an actual book? Or would that pretty much make no sense to do as its pretty much two different books then? I wanted the poetry to be somewhat appealing esthetically, but I'm feeling like going about that in this way would just hinder sales as its really two separate works that have the same content. Does that make sense or am I wrong.
Sure. You can still go for the unique flow in a print book. Thatâs fair game for sure. Doing two different versions as an ebook would be one way to do things.
But it might create market confusion. Never know till you try. Iâd recommend asking support first to make sure itâs okay. I donât want you getting in trouble for publishing duplicate content. Though the formatting is different, the content is the same. That could prove problematic.
@@DaleLRoberts yes this is exactly what I was thinking, it could create confusion as content is the same. I guess if I see fair results just having it normal font would be a good way to gauge whether or not its even worth considering paying a font editor. Thanks for the advice I appreciate it!
Thank you for the information. I tried filling up my details for the tax information but it showed that my country and the bank is not recognize. So I choose the alternative, now how will I get the credit alert for royalties when my book is being sold
You won't get an alert for every sale. Just check your Reports tab in your dashboard.
Thank you for your response, will I be allowed to access the funds and how do I access the funds upon sales
Dale, first and foremost, great video! I had a question regarding your upload process for the cover. When you uploaded the cover for the eBook, your file was JUST the front cover, correct? And when you uploaded your cover for the paperback, your file was BOTH the front and back cover, correct? In other words, you had 2 different cover files, 1 for eBook that was just the front (because why would you need a back cover) and another one for the paperback that included a back cover. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Yes, I just use the front cover for the ebook. And, yes, the print book needs to be one PDF with the full cover - front, back, spine and bleed lines.
@@DaleLRoberts thanks for the clarity!
what platform can I use to design the book? not seeing the option to do so in canva.
PhotoShop
You can use Word or even Google Docs for eBooks. It's super simple. You can create PDFs in Canva, but you don't want to upload a PDF as an eBook because the text needs to be reflowable. A Word doc is better.
However, for print, PDF is what you want. Here's a video covering some of the platforms you can use to format your books - czcams.com/video/_QYGlRMxpP4/video.html
@@DaleLRoberts thanks!
also, if you get an ISBN and want to change the content a little, do you have to use the same ISBN?
It depends largely on how much you change. If the page count, trim size and titling stay the same, youâre good.
I did all the steps lol. Now Im waiting on Amazon to get it out of review(day 3)
Wow, really? I've never had it take the full 72 hours.
@Self-Publishing with Dale finally up. That's after I contacted them
When KDP used to be Create Space, they provided the copyright. Does KDP provide that, or how would you get that? I authored a book years ago through Create Space, and the copyright was provided. I'd like to publish another book, but I'm confused on the copyright.
Here's what I know about that - czcams.com/video/GVnrnc_ASNI/video.html
I have a silly question. For the Digital Rights Management, if we select yes, is there a fee for the service?
No, there are no fees associated with the self-publishing process.
