  • On May 29th, 1985, in Bruxelles was going to be played the most important soccer event in Europe: The final match of the Champions league, between Juventus (IT) and Liverpool (UK). At that time they were by far the most popular and winning teams in Europe.
Liverpool fans were also considered very dangerous and called "hooligans". Thousands of Italian and English fans went to the Heysel stadium, which was unsafe and very old, unfit to host such an important event.
Before the match some of the hooligans began to rush toward sectors occupied by some Italian supporters, as they usually did. But that sector was not occupied by their counterpart, it was packed by families and common supporters.
The Liverpool hooligans, probably high on alcohol, kept on rushing and pushing, while the Belgian police was completely incapable to manage the situation, and the Italian fans began to jam against a wall, trying to escape.
Eventually the wall collapsed, due to the pressure of the Italian fans, leaving 39 dead on the ground, crushed by the crowd beside them. The Policemen were just staring at the tragedy, doing absolutely nothing.
All this took place before the match. The match was not cancelled, Juventus won its first Champion league, in front of 39 dead. Later on, all English football teams were banned for 5 years from any European competition.

The thing that makes me sad about that night apart from the deaths and injuries was the fact that the game could have been a classic. Obviously once the teams were made aware of what had happened their heads had gone and their hearts weren't in it.

At least 40 people died, the riots were still going on all over the stadium, the police seemed completely unprepaired for something like that, but the match was played as usual. Unbelievable.

UEFA boss at the time Jacques Georges is the one who should have been held accountable for all of this for choosing Heysel for the game to be staged, despite both Liverpool & Juventus wanting the game to be played elsewhere because the stadium was practically falling apart after many years of no proper maintenance to the ground. Georges said no & should have resigned as his decision was the one that killed those fans.

it is quite sad that there was no one with balls in this hell to say out that 'come on guys, it's over'. At the end there was a pitch invasion, they could stab the players or anyone really. It is unbelievable that match was played after what had happened.

Why are all the Juventus supporters celebrating even they know all these people have died?

If it wasn't for the tragic loss of mostly Juve fans (this match for me shouldn't have been played, and certainly Liverpool, because of their fans that day, didn't deserve to win it), this match would be the biggest fix in history.

The Juve players did not know people had died. The club kept it from them for fear it would impact on their performance. The Liverpool players knew but Platini an Co did not.
