Arrau's approach to the piano was technically free and effortless, his awesome facility was always at the service of the music. Arrau was a virtuoso entirely without vanity, first and foremost he was a cultured musician with great artistic integrity. Thank you for this fascinating recorded document.
Eine Spielweise, der man äußerste Bewunderung zuteil werden lassen muss. Eleganz, ausgefeilte Technik ohne kühl zu werden zu drohen, sondern im Gegenteil sich im musikalischen Ausdruck bestätigt. Bravo, bravissimo! Herr Arrau!!!
interesting fact is that Arrau made a recording of Liszts etudes which was critically acclaimed. I never thought of Arrau as a Liszt interpreter until I heard that recording. Truly phenomenal.
Amazing! I had always wished to see these pieces complete with Arrau of which I only knew short clips. Here one can see his legendary technique based on weight and relaxation - and a good amount of fingerwork, as this film shows - and the unique romantic frasing in natural long lines.
True romantic man. Virtuosity appears here with a incredible softness and clarity despite the quality of the recordings sound. This grand, obviously does not match an Stainway but, such a great sound and it seems to respond very quickly to the Arrau's fingers. Quote for Baldwin too!.
Definitely worth every second. You can't go wrong with this guy. Excellent camera work as well. At 10:49 his face says so much, it's like he really means what he's doing.
I miss the resonance of the hall in this film. Notice the use of the hands and arms, no stiff angular movements, directing the movement through subtle weight transfers.

Really amazing. Do you know anything about a recording of Arrau playing the Concerto 16 by Mozart? Some years ago there were some videos of this on CZcams but sadly they are not available anymore.
@@ClassicalPianoRarities Yeah, a few 1976 on today show. I used my work email to chat with NBC. They won’t release unless licensed though will transfer samples for $250. I’m too cheap!
Heard Gieseking play this Mendelssohn 3 years later and prefer his interpretation. Here, Arrau is perfectioin - yet, to me, somewhat stilted in exaggerated dynamics (over-cooked) in opening tempo. The Chopin I would rather hear it sung (as Chopin wrote it) instead of Liszt having his hand in it (I realize MANY of the old guard greats recorded it). Arrau performs the Gnomenreigen EXQUISITELY -- his best of the three.

Some of my favorite Arrau Liszt is from the 1920’s and 1930’s. Stay tuned!
Hi. Arrau's teacher, Marrin Krause was a disciple of Liszt.

Awesome visual clarity! Thank you so much!
Too bad that as with many other works, Cziffra actually makes music with the rondo capriciosso and not another etude.

Horowitz was a good friend of Arrau ???
Horowitz was well-acquainted with Arrau, starting from 1925 or so!
@@ClassicalPianoRarities That Arrau went to Horowitz recitals, that is something everyone knows. Now that does NOT mean they were friends...

I will look around.
I think it was a recording from the Tanglewood festival. I never found the entire recording, just excerpts until now.
Nice! Can you get Lazar Berman’s transcendental etudes performances from today show? ; )
Interesting! Did Berman ever play the Liszt Transcendentals on TV?

Lol. Some people enjoy coca cola some others enjoy Orange Juice
Budweiser and Blue Label both get you hooked, without a doubt we already know which is the best quality.
