My favorite album of all time is Level 42's "World Machine". Mark King is a beast.
Been a huge Fan of Level 42 in the 80's and totally dig their first 5 albums. They really killed it live.
In did the best ❤
Soooo there are NO left hand slap in Heathrow atleast not in the intro bassline which is what you are teaching here. So not only do you show in the wrong key but you're also showing the wrong technique. Please LEARN TO PLAY MARK KING BEFORE TRYING TO SHOW OTHERS HOW TO
43 of Level 42 has the funkiest bass riff ever. When I first heard it in the 80s, I had to hear it like 100 times in a row.

thank you julia and guten freitag bass meister.....i have been listening to ida alot lately i am learning to use a loop pedal and shes impressive with loops and her slap style is amazing .thanks for for giving her props
I've been a guitar player for nearly 50 years. Watching your videos and your grooving while playing is very inspiring and is encouraging me to get myself a bass and learn how to play it. Grüße aus Bolivien!
I am also a guitar player, since about 35 years and I recently bought a bass. My advice : buy a bass and enjoy 👍🏻 Best regards from Belgium
Same here...
@VD Only if they try and play it like a guitar. Its a different instrument
Same. I got a music man stingray "used" for decoration. The bass is going to be put to good use. Thanks Julia.
@E.T I'm a shining example of that, but I'm still working on it. It's much easier to get a gig as a bass player ... if you are good.
Nice video and I really love the enthusiasm Julia puts into all these vids, fantastic!
Great vid. love your bass playing, thanks for sharing Julia
Amazing talent👍🏼Thanks Julia
I m a Mark king fanatic since the 80s we're the same age got all the cassettes! And played all these! No big Deal

Run for Cover is one of my absolute favorite basslines to play! Such a great groove! Thanks for the great video :)
You are a great teaching style: explanation, slow progressive demo, then real time example. Awesome.
Please give us more of these lessons, really awaiting your videos to learn more....thanks for all the great stuff...keep it up miss Julia!

The first one really helped me, Scott's bass lessons has a similar progression lesson that i started months ago, super hard to get down but finally got it and this just further connected some dots for me, thank you!
stoned after these exercises, red hot cant'stop it seems to me in slow motion 🤩 tanks Julia! 🙏💙
Essa garota é muito talentosa. Virei fã já a algum tempo. Maravilhosa!
Another Awesome video Julia. You inspire me to take my thumping to the next level
That was great. Thanks for sharing this wonderful video.
Julia, really good playing, the 'feel' is right on and of course your sound is immaculate. Thanks for presenting this and inspiring us all. Keep playing fearlessly girl you 'got it' ! A big thank you and shout out to you from Canada!
Amazing vídeo, love you julia!
Great lesson Julia!! its hard for me to slap and i really apreciate this video, thanks!!
Julia....
Thanks for slowing it downn....good job....not alot of talking ...grateful appreciated that so much...straight forward approach. Thanks for sharing..very generous
Thanks for making my Friday night, Julia! 😍
So nice that you remembered Mark King! I started to play bass because of him. "Something About You" was always one of my favorite songs and when I ran deep into this song and other ones, I became his fan.
wow man..i'm in the same trip. discovering MArk King has been an inspiration. just buy a Bass from Thomann's 2 months ago and currently giving my baby steps in bass world. Also Julia is a badass
I also wonder why Mark King is forgotten so often. His style is so unique and he uses such increadable groove patterns and tricks - wow. I saw him live in 1982 and after that I sold my Rickenbaker and bought an Alembic Spoiler.

Just discovered this channel and Julia today. Fab! Please some more stuff from Mark King, been a huge Fan (and still am) of Level 42 in the 80's. Cheers from Germany x Ilona
Great stuff. More lessons please!😎
Thank you for this video. I recently bought a Harley Benton PB shorty and this is my goal. Wanted to really learn slap bass. All the best!!!!
Hi ,I have been watching Ida Neilson since last 4,5years almost daily.BASS guitar gives me immense pleasure.

Você é maravilhosa Professora Julia!!!
Cool video
Thank you Julia xx
Thanks! i asked for some Mark King, and you did deliver :) Totally worth subscribing for. I'm going to buy a bass once I free up some budget.
I knew about Level 42, of course, but I didn't know Heathrow and it's fantastic! Thank you!
It's on their Debut album and it's dope.
It’s from their early years of jazz-funk fusion where 2 or 3 out of 8 album tracks were instrumentals…

Great video and slap bass is still something i have to work on
Such a beauty and skillful musician. Greetz
Ciao Julia, video interessantissimo e tu bravissima come sempre. Grazie.
Tanti saluti dall'Italia! 👋🏻👋🏻
Cool examples 👍👍
Wonderful and patient tuition, Julia - thank you! Can I suggest “Mind up tonight” by Melba Moore as a bass line to consider. I think it’s ‘Ready’ Freddie Washington originally. Very cool bass and a great dance tune!
What a really good Julia... I admire you a lot!
What a beautiful Queen of Bass Julia!!!!

love it! Thanks =)
Thanks for including the King from the UK, Been slapping on a 4 string for years, Now trying to get it down on a 5 string is so much harder. Thanks for the video, There are not too many advanced slap lessons on youtube that are as clear as yous, Keep up the good work.
Check out TalkingBass's video on Run For Cover. A very clear, complete lesson.
What!?!? I missed this video! :-) Super cool!
Great stuff as always Julia, would love if u could do a dive into some more of pino's playing maybe from the D'Angelo era or more recently his collab with Blake mills, cheers:)
You're a great teacher.
You are soooo awesome!
awesome technique 👍👍
Thank you so much for doing these videos Julia... I was wondering if you could add the music or Tabs to your videos so I could tell what notes you are playing some times.... again, Thanks so much... you are totally AWESOME!!!!
Das schläppli isch aber guet!🔥
That was awesome. The only other slap had learned was the Alabama slap... it comes from way down south! 🤭
Very good teacher👍🏼
Thanks for the heads up about Ida Nielsen, I thought I knew everyone lol
Good job 👍
Hey Julia .. I was watching this one again .. you make it look easy & I thought I might share a few tips I use to compensate / overcome my lack of mobility in all left hand fingers .. I use a delay & a slap back echo set to allow ' me ' time to get set for the next part . Of course if you try this it will not work in every situation But it helps me when I am trying to record & if I use a looper & ( when I get it right ) I can Bounce along as if I am playing way beyond my own personal skills .. Think like the ' Edge ' in U2 .. when he get's in time with himself .. as I say not always practical live but handy for short sections .. Love you all at Thomann .. So much stuff I'd like to buy Direct from you at Big store but with Covid & vat & delays at Borders .. it makes more sense for me to wait for now .. Stay safe & keep on being cool .
Thanks Julia.
One of the most memorable bass line is Marcus’s Run for Cover with David Sanborn. Check the live studio concert of David Sanborn (video in black and white) is the best Run for Cover version. And Julia you’re really cool and top bass player 👍🏻
COOL VIDEO !!!
That Ida Nielsen video was 🔥🔥🔥!!! I love all the grooves Julia drops knowledge on! Such amazing stuff!
1:05 Sick!
Thank you!
Cool ideas. Ida was also using double finger plucks to get some of the triplets at the end of the clup you played.
You also touched on but didn't go into the left hand thump technique that Mark King uss a lot: thumping with middle, ring and pinky while fretting a note with his index finger, like in the main figure of Heathrow. Maybe next time?
Julia, you should play the ultimate bass song: "The Awakening" by The Reddings. Love your show and I hope you get a good raise for the work you are doing!
Love ❤️
Thanks Julia 🥰

Nice video !
There are sooooooo many other mark king licks to explore . Mark , like many great bass players ( Jaco, will lee, charlie drayton, Mark was a drummer first. That's why he plays the way he does!..and sounds so funky. But the real amazing thing is that he sings lead , chews gum, & even flew on cables above the stage ( wembly 1986 video " hot water "and used to me a madman on stage. Jumping & running all over the place ..he's an amazing musician. Check out his 1st solo record "Infulences"..he played almost every instrument on it!..Mark is Mr. LEVEL 42 !! ..and is still doing it as good as ever!!
Very good
I don't even own a bass and I find your vids fascinating!
👀
Hi ,you are fantastic tutor.
It is such a pleasure watching your craftmanship and good spirit. You seem to be a soul girl, you should check out the Gino Vannelli records. Lots of great bass stuff there.
Just subscribed I am a bass player for life. Of all the stuff I watched over the pandemic - you were fantastic! Watch the wrecking Crew
I just love the way you say Thump,
But I love the way you play more and the spirit you have is the best
Julia makes it look so easy.. 😎
Огонь!
I will come back after I finish my begginer training
Hi Julia, thanks for all the great vids. Can you look in the lens please ? Makes it even more personal.
Thanks for the lesson, girl.👍👍👍

Children Say... just such a great Mark King Groove - BTW my Fav level 42 album for sure is "Running in the Family"
OMG! Epic Bass Goddess! Slap Like! Do it NOW!

Try sliding up from the 7th fret D note on the G String as a 1/16 note pickup on the last sixteenth of the bar before that Run for cover phrase ending lick! Still with the fourth pinky finger and other fingers flat across the neck for muting. 👍🏻
Hi Julia have you tried the bass line in Level 42 “To be with you again” it’s insane to play especially the verse
This shows how that something that was just "slapped together" can be a great thing, haha.
You gotta do a lesson on dirk lance: the slap part on redefine, a certain shade of green, and new skin
Hey, like your teaching style. Are all of instructive videos in one place? I would like to work on the techniques. Thanks. Miller
Hey Julia another cool lesson featuring some gr8 clips .. & now here is my Boring old man tips .. Lol To avoid RSI or repetitive strain injury which is common to Tennis player's One tip is to do what a lot of boring old guys like EVH & Mark knopfler admit to doing lol .. is to sit & watch TV & just keep " Noodling " Technically this will involve dividing your attention & allowing you to relax ( & can you imagine in the olden times there was no remote control & you had to keep getting up tochange channel lol ) But this habit of short periods of practice .. Rather than Intensive Focus Method ( which is useful at other times ) means that the part of your Brain that controls ' Muscle Memory ' is engaged in a different way .. & also that some moves start to happen automatically .. like the muting & damping .. Also I heard a rumour that in Mark Kings early day's He used to heavily tape up his Thumb ( & having an Alembic bass didn't hurt ) Peace & love to all at Thommann
ojala escuches uno de los primero albums de Level 42, llamado The Early Tapes, canción Love Meeting Love por favor
Hi Julia, big fan. Would you consider doing a bass review for “best left handed basses”? Lefties are so likely to be stuck with entry level and 1st tier basses. How about showing us some higher level and higher end lefties that maybe available to us. I only ask because it is so frustrating watching ‘basses of the year’ videos when all those desirable instruments are unlikely to be available in a left handed version.
Merci
I love Julia

I really enjoy this woman's teaching. She's extremely effective at conveying technique.
Where to go for inspiration? I come here of course :-)
🙌🤘
I proper love what you do! Any chance you could do a Squarepusher video?
Also you are ace! Total inspiration!
Hi Julia....really amazing how you are doing your videos...I´m ímpressed!! These great bass players like Marcus, Stanley, Victor, Louis...they are my teachers in playing the bass :-)... My "bass live" started with Love Games from Level 42 and I can´t understand why he is so under estimated in the US as he is so great in playing the bass. Thanks for "heathrow" in this video and greatings from Germany
HE is of course Mark King
wicked --great job ,can you tell me what the pineapple is about ;]
Who is she talking to?! I joke, another great lesson. I'm 38yo and hadn't considered slap until you started on this channel. Best I did when I started was 'What Was I Thinking' by 311 but now I know I've been doing that wrong all along 😆
Rob Trujillo for his work in Infectious Grooves!
Your a good teacher

Estás muy linda!
