  • Today songs are Le Freak by Chic and lingerie by unknown Hinson
    In this video I discuss in my best effort to distinguish between a standard conventional scanner and a digital and analog trunking scanner what you should buy and what the differences are.

    Very interesting video.I dont think I'll run out and buy a digital trunking scanner right away not only because they are so complex ,but here in Canada everything is way more expensive for some reason.
    Watched Unknown Hinson Voodoo Child
    Loved it .That guy can play a guitar.
    The song i have for you was one of my Grandfathers favorites.
    The song is: When Im Cleaning Windows by George Formby.
    I remember sitting with him as a kid listening to these songs.

      On Queens albumn A Night at the Opera, Brian May played a George Formby banjo ukelele on the song Good Company.

    I have a closet full of scanners. If you want to listen to the cops, you are SOL. Not going to happen. There may be a few small police departments across the country that do not use encrypted radio transmissions, but pretty much all larger police departments do. I really have no other reason to own a scanner, so I have not bought one for quite a while. And all the ones I have are worthless. I am a licensed amateur, and have pretty much lost interest in that because it has gone from radios to computers.

      I understand, you are more about wave propagation and SSB/CW instead of repeaters and digital transmission (which basically feels like the internet)
      Well i am like you, I like the old school ways, maybe the younger generation will prefer to do things the old fashioned way considering how boring and common software has become.

    You can put a discriminator tap on the old analog scanners and hook it up to a PC and decode some digital signals, it's just not going to do trunk tracking.

      @@JohnnyNJones I have a Uniden BC355n, which looks similar to the scanner on the left, but it will scan up to 800-900MHz (it just doesn't go into 700MHz range which many locations use not only for the control frequency, but also the frequencies the control frequency assigns the radios. luckily those frequencies that get assigned in my location are in the 850MHz range, the control frequency is 774MHz, but I can't use the control channel on the scanner anyways).
      I Installed a Discriminator tap in it, and hooked the 3.5mm of the discriminator tap into the line in (Mic input will work as well) to one of my PCs which was running DSDPlus (there's a free version which will do P25 phase 1 and a few other digital modes, and a paid version which will do Phase 2 and a few more digital modes). I use my SDR to watch the local control frequency (when running SDR++ set to output to VB cable and DSDPlus configured to listen by the VB cable) to see what frequencies the control channel uses to assign to the radios and I programmed the scanner for those frequencies, the only issue with this method, you don't get to choose what you get to listen to, if PD/Fire/EMS use those frequencies and only want to listen to PD you have no choice, it's either all of it, or none of it (you can't lock/block an agency out).
      I then bought a mini PC (MinisForum N40) as the PC I was using was just too big, produces too much heat, and uses a lot more power, a 5" HDMI monitor, and a Sound Blaster Play! 3. (All of which sits comfortably on top of the scanner).
      I hook the scanner up to the Mic input of the Sound Blaster Play! 3, and run DSDPlus on the mini PC and it pretty much works like a digital scanner. Been listening to local PD/Fire/,EMS which is using P25. DSDPlus (the paid version) will decode P25 phase 1 and 2, D-Star, Yaesu Fusion, NXDN, DMR, and a few others.
      And if for whatever reason the scanner dies, I can just buy a second SDR (the first SDR sits on the control frequency, and the second jumps around to whatever the frequency the control channel assigns) and use DSDPlus (it's capable of operating multiple SDRs), the mini PC and the 5" monitor and will have a truck tracking digital scanner. The only reason why I'm currently using a scanner now is that I already had the scanner that was pretty much collecting dust, and wanted to see if it could make it somewhat usable again.
      Sorry for the long winded post. It's far far more complicated to explain, than it is to set up and get working.

    Is a dual trunking scanner still any good now?

    • @JohnnyNJones
      @JohnnyNJones  Před 6 měsíci

      Well, that’s debatable.
      Even old-school FM scanners are still useful because many paramedics and EMS still use standard FM frequencies
      Rule of thumb is if you can get it for cheap pick one up 👍

    Hi Just Watched This CZcams Video And It Was Great!! Interested In Buying A Scanner That Can Cover All The LAFD,LAPD,My Local Police Department ETC Like That. My Scanner That I Currently Have Is An Old Radio Shack Scanner Which Can Not Cover The New Trucnking System That My Sheriffs Department And Police Department Have. I'm Not Getting One For Only The Trunking System But All Sorts Of Frequency's. I Would Like A Radio That Would BE Affordable With A Wide Range In The Price Range Of $10-150 If Possible. Kindly Let Me Now In The Comments What Scanner Is Needed For This. I Was Looking At The Baofeng UV-5R Two Way Radio But Dont Now If That Supports Trunking And Non Truncking Frequency's. Please Let Me Now. Thank You!!!!

      @JohnnyNJones  Před 2 lety

      For that price I recommend the trunking scanner i showed in the video.
      The bearcat bc796d
      The problem is the channels are constantly changing and software is evolving. I don’t know if it’s worth 400 bucks just to get a few extra channel modes
      The baofeng is not going to help you any more than a cheap scanner

      I have an all band radio, I picked these up mostly for my subscribers and my mother
      But I do listen to hams occasionally
      I have a RadioShack shortwave radio with AM FM and SSB/CW functionality
      I got it for a decent price too, but like I said most of what I buy is for my subscribers so I don’t get a chance to mess around with my projects a lot

    great video, however, I would say for people who live in a rural area some should just get a Uniden bear tracker 3 15x new as its a trunking scanner, I live on an island al it picks up is 1 channel for the sheriff so I think just a basic trunking scanner works well, just my 2 cents on the subject, great video, keep up the good work.
