I grew up in a broken home raised by a single mom in an urban area which was crime and drug infested in the sixties and seventies. I come home from school pop in a TV dinner and watch shows like the Andy Griffith show. It gave me hope and I believed that there were good god fearing decent people in the world. And l dreamed that there could be a town like Mayberry. As crazy as it might sound I learned many values from those wholesome shows. I believe that it helped me become a better person and survive the insanity I was exposed to as a child.

They make me feel good and they remind me of growing up watching TV with my grandmas and grandpa's. I remember moments like doing woodworking in the garage with my papa (currently 90) and hearing the sounds of Gomer Pyle traveling through the house as grandma made raisen bread. "Too bad every town isn't like a Mayberry."
While I used to watch this show, recently what has struck me as 1 thing odd about Mayberry and The Andy Griffith Show is that considering it took place in the Carolinas....there are no black people to be seen, ANYWHERE. I have lived in the south (Alabama and Texas), and while white people try to convince themselves that non-white people don't exist in either state, it is not really possible to have a "slice of life" type show and not include a person of color in at least a small role. Ironically, in interviews and probably at least 1 of these CZcams videos, Andy Griffith will tell you how he and the other actors tried to make the show as "real" as possible.

@@howardkerr8174 I like the Andy Griffith show. As a black woman, what you just said never once entered my mind. It was a show about a small town, race had nothing to do with the show. Only someone like you, who is a racist, would feel the way you do, because to you race comes into everything. Moreover, Andy Griffith never said they wanted to make the show as real as possible. What he and others said was they wanted to make a show where there were no problems so people could forget reality. The opposite of what you just said. Watch season 7 episode 26 "Opie's Piano Lesson," and even in that episode the man's race was not an issue.
The Andy Griffith show was just a show about a small town, where everyone knew each other and were friendly. The fact the people were white was irreverent. Their race, nor my race, had nothing to do with the show whatsoever.

I will never forget Nov.22, 1963. I was 12 and in a Catholic School. The nuns were crying. I never saw a nun cry. They let us go home at 1:00 p.m. My mom said "What are you doing home? I said," The nuns were crying and said " Children, you all have to go home" My mom put the TV on and we saw Walter Cronkite crying and say that President Kennedy died in a hospital in Dallas after being shot. We were in total shock and disbelief. How could this happen? That day was my 911. I will never forget it! I also am a big fan of The Andy Griffith Show and enjoy the reruns on MeTV. The show helped all of us get through the 60's, a bad time in America just like the show helps us get through 2020 and Covid 19, today! When I was a kid, my mother worked at Universal Studios and she was right below the lead public relations person at the time. She said that out of all of the actors she met, she singled out Don Knotts, and John Forsythe as being absolute "princes", (very warm human beings). I have a picture of my mom with Jonathon Winters from 1967, and some, where she is posing with cardboard cutouts of Martin Milner, (Jim Malloy) of Adam-12. She is kissing him on the cheek, and he has a big smile on. I made a copy of it and gave it to a retired policeman, with the caption, "we love our cops", and he really liked it!!
There was a file cabinet in her office, at Universal Sudios, and she said to me, "go pick out some signed pictures for yourself". I picked out Andy Griffith, and the stars of Adam-12, because I really liked their TV series. I still wish that I had them, but they are long gone!
Another time, with my mom and brothers, we were on the vacant set of "Ironside". I was rolling around in Raymond Burr's wheelchair that was used as a prop for the TV series. Darren McGavin, (star in A Christmas Carol, and the Night Stalker TV series of 1974-75) walked on by, saw me and said, "hello young man", shook my hand and continued on his way. That sure made me feel special!
My older brother told me of the time, while with my mom, (I was not present), that he was in the Munster's house on Universal's Lot. He told me that he operated the staircase that lifted up, where "Spot the Dragon" was, and that one of the prop men showed him how they shoot all the spider webs in the Munster house!

As a film, television stage etc etc fan I absolutely love watching your well thought-out, and insightful biographies, and stories about the people we've come to accept as family if not friends. Andy Griffith totally shocked me with his move to television. I can't believe that the incredible that the incredible actor who portrayed Lonesome Rhodes in, Elia Kazan's A Face In The Crowd which Imo should have been an Academy award-winning performance for Andy. After a face in the crowd, came No Time for Sergeants. Hysterical! Once again, Griffith shines as an ignorant, backwoods character who gets drafted. No Time for Sergeants should have earned Andy a Academy Award nomination minimally. Both flicks, and characters were Polar Opposites, and Andy proves he could do it all. Next was onion heads. Not the best script, but Andy did his best, and although it's not on par with a face in the crowd or No Time for Sergeants Andy does his best. Two out of three isn't bad for any actor. Onion heads was a bad script, and would have been difficult for anyone to make the movie anything more than it was. He kills every performance as Andy Taylor in hit televisions, The Andy Griffith Show. It still shocks me that he chose to go from Broadway to movies, and then to television. He was such an incredible force on the big screen. Moving to the small screen doesn't make sense to me. Andy possibly didn't enjoy working on movies, and found television a much easier medium to work with. The fact that he probably had total control over his show, a large paycheck, and who knows what other perks made him choose the small screen over the big one. He was indeed an incredible actor. And a face in the crowd although pain during its original release, has become a film students required viewing. it is more relevant today then it was when it was released. After all we have a demagogue similar to the Lonesome Roads character currently in the White House. My suggestion for fans of The Andy Griffith Show that might have never seen a face in the crowd and No Time for Sergeants, do so and do so soon. You will not be disappointed!

I still live in the county just outside of town limits. Most all little towns in Southwest Virginia were like that back then.
Mount Airy, North Carolina, Andy Griffith's hometown and model for Mayberry is just a one hour drive from my home. Of course, I've visited many times. Saw Andy's childhood home and enjoyed lunch at the same restaurant Andy ate in as a child, still called The Snappy Lunch. I too still watch the show at every opportunity. My brothers and friends often joke and make references to the show, and know in great detail the plot of every episode from memory and can quote many script lines, and often do. We don't care for the color episodes though. Just the black and white ones. Most people say the same thing.

At :34, "Although his show shied away from controversial topics". Wouldn't THAT be nice today. I guess they recognized the fact that it's called show BUSINESS, and it's pretty stupid to pick a political side and alienate half your audience. Too bad the entertainment industry doesn't realize this today.

That's a pretty cynical outlook. Judging by the quantity of remakes, sequels and rip offs, I would say entertaining the plebs is very high on the agendas of those that decide what gets made. Entertaining people means money coming in. Whatever has made money in the past if rehashed is likely to make more money. Original interesting stories are risky- people are suspicious of them.
As for 'them' despising their audiences -that's a very sweeping statement- some probably do, others don't. Telling 'us' what to do and say- celebrity endorsements have been around for a long time. A great many people really are influenced by a face they have come to trust through various fictions. Sad but true. If you are one of those few who are immune to the effect of celebrity, well done.

I never really got that from him. Maybe he said he liked America and that was offensive to you?? I don't follow him that much.

Oh...you're talking about the character he played. The show was actually very Liberal. They made his character that way to make fun of Conservatives (much like Archie Bunker). It was a pretty funny show. Very well written.

Dosent matter anymore though. All the networks are owned by the same people now. If they run from one show of theirs the only choice is to go to abother they own. They can play both sides of the field these days.

This show had a big impact on me growing up. My grandparents watched it & I did with them. Let anyone bring up old TV shows of the 60s & most of the time people say Andy Griffith show by all means. Andy & Barney lol was 2 helluva actors & down to earth. I sure miss them. I was just watching Matlock on METV.
