Does Phil Gould deserve credit for Penrith Panthers' success? | NRL 360

  • James Hooper and Phil Rothfield were involved a heated back and forth over the influence of Phil Gould in building the Penrith Panthers’ roster into a premiership force in 2020.
Gould parted ways with the club shortly after Ivan Cleary returned for his second stint as head coach in 2019 and Hooper believes his impact has been unfairly forgotten.
However Rothfield believes Cleary reshaped Gould’s roster by offloading some underperforming overpaid stars as the two journalists were involved in a fiery exchange.

Of course the 'five-year plan' didn't win them a premiership. However, apart from last season, Penrith have been fighting for the top eight; even the top four! Gus' plan has helped youngsters come through from their own academy. Panthers Club is up and running well, membership numbers getting better. Yes, it hasn't won them a premiership, but they are on their way, largely, due to Gus' help.

"The 5 year plan" was never about a premiership, they covered it on this very show. Gus was asked how long it'd take him to get the Panthers from a basket case stable and he said "I've inherited such a mess I'd take half a decade to fix it." That's the origin of the "5 year plan" the media like to go on about.

He was important in that he facilitated revamping the training ground, paid off the banks and he says that they have the most local juniors in their squad (but then shouldnt they anyway given the nursery). That cash injection, some say saved the club. But roster management hmm. Lewis, Jennings, Graham he couldn't convince of his vision .. list goes on of how many players left that won premierships at other clubs. The my way or the highway method sucks balls, you need proven strategies for dealing with different personalties to get the best out of them. What Gus brought to the table as GM was good enough to make the top 8 but not enough to make them title contenders. I think him absolving himself from Ivan Clearly who was struggling at the time was that deficiency in his mentality in that he doesn't have a growth mindset. Hes anchored to certain beliefs and that will always hurt you.
