Does Phil Gould deserve credit for Penrith Panthers' success? | NRL 360

- James Hooper and Phil Rothfield were involved a heated back and forth over the influence of Phil Gould in building the Penrith Panthers’ roster into a premiership force in 2020.
Gould parted ways with the club shortly after Ivan Cleary returned for his second stint as head coach in 2019 and Hooper believes his impact has been unfairly forgotten.
However Rothfield believes Cleary reshaped Gould’s roster by offloading some underperforming overpaid stars as the two journalists were involved in a fiery exchange.

I like listening to blokes who think they know everything
Think 🤣
🤣🤣🤣
Its like yarning with the missus
These blokes have forgotten more about Rugby league than u know
How can you be salty? Their professional NRL journalists and they sure as hell know more than you.
Correct headline: Ben Ikin and three clowns who are stealing a living reporting on something they know nothing about.
Couldn't agree more mate
I think Hooper made sense here.
Ikin played origin at least
Start a blog and work your way up to replace them...or quit whining.
@@benbishop7512 low IQ comment, if I steal your wallet and the police do nothing about it. I'm guessing you won't complain given you can't replace the police force by yourself.
Why is buzz on any show the bloke is ridiculous
I love him entertainment
Snotfield's got a horrible voice
Buzzwitt
Of course the 'five-year plan' didn't win them a premiership. However, apart from last season, Penrith have been fighting for the top eight; even the top four! Gus' plan has helped youngsters come through from their own academy. Panthers Club is up and running well, membership numbers getting better. Yes, it hasn't won them a premiership, but they are on their way, largely, due to Gus' help.
Fox League - get Ian P on the show instead of Buzz
100% agree mate, good to see someone talking about the real facts.
Dwight Schrute Oath mate, another bloke with some common sense lol
"The 5 year plan" was never about a premiership, they covered it on this very show. Gus was asked how long it'd take him to get the Panthers from a basket case stable and he said "I've inherited such a mess I'd take half a decade to fix it." That's the origin of the "5 year plan" the media like to go on about.
im aware this is a 3 year old comment, but there was never any "5 year plan" by gus, that was the media.
Ivan clearly deserves the credit
There’s more then one person deserving of credit.
I see what you did there...
No
Its well known Kenty doesnt get along with certain people in league hence his answers sometimes
Really??? You don't say.....😏
He'd go better working at macas !
I had a debate with some wanker about this the other day, im not even a fan of penrith or gus but no doubt the work he put in at penrith has helped them get to where they are now. The proof is in the pudding, the success no coincidence
get on your knees and suck.
what a suck hole lolol
By the look of him you should Phil Gould with fruit and vegetables.
This is the best joke I've ever read
The Murdoch press just loves Gould!
And very bad journos !!
What success? What have they won?
eddie lasowsky lost 1 game this year
@@hygyyghiurcnji8646 They've not won anything since 2003. They've had no success.
@@eddielasowsky7777 Are you stupid? They are on top of the ladder and have only lost one game.
Eddie come out of from under that rock...record so far so good for this season...they seem to be the ONLY team playing like Team!!
@@ksonahkson6546 Got to win a competition to be successful, end of discussion. This bullshit about being a good team means nothing.
With all due respect, Phil Gould set the club up then took the necessary step back and now the club is at the top of the table. You guys have a strange perspective of success.
How rediculous - what an extreme connection. It’s 100% Ivan Cleary
Credits to Gus! He is the reason for this Roster at the Panthers.
Yes gus planted the seeds
When did everyone start calling it a roster?
After the Roosters started winning.
Please give Kent a Football Managers' role in an NRL club and see how he goes. He has no clue.
Gould gone gives Panthers playing team a whole new energy- politics aside, I'd love to see them play grand final.
Nathan Cleary has been a dominant half since he was a junior. James Maloney impeded him towards the end. He was a different player when Maloney was injured. Pearce did the same thing in Origin last year and got in the way. The kid is too respectful.
The bloke who almost got the Dally M before being suspended was Greg Inglis in 2012. He would have gone very close to beating Ben Barba
I’m confused here, which numbers did Buzz and Kenty play back in the day?
In some ways, Yes. His contribution is invaluable, but Gus departure was good. Had he remained, there would be too many heads and confusion on who is running the show.
These guys were Super Coaches in their hay day
He was important in that he facilitated revamping the training ground, paid off the banks and he says that they have the most local juniors in their squad (but then shouldnt they anyway given the nursery). That cash injection, some say saved the club. But roster management hmm. Lewis, Jennings, Graham he couldn't convince of his vision .. list goes on of how many players left that won premierships at other clubs. The my way or the highway method sucks balls, you need proven strategies for dealing with different personalties to get the best out of them. What Gus brought to the table as GM was good enough to make the top 8 but not enough to make them title contenders. I think him absolving himself from Ivan Clearly who was struggling at the time was that deficiency in his mentality in that he doesn't have a growth mindset. Hes anchored to certain beliefs and that will always hurt you.
My only problem with Gus was that he tried to be the coach without actually being the coach.
Gould this, Gould that...it's pathetic, the media wars in our code are boring
Built pathway infrastructure and panthers group, i think.
buzz not giving Gus any credit, what a surprise !
It's gotta be Trent Barrett
Can everyone chill out yes they are on top of the ladder but until they win a comp it means nothing
I believe he does.
Kenty played only one first grade game for parramatta. Don’t think he knows what he’s talking about..
Aaaaand have you ever played any rugby league??
Playing the sport doesn't give you definitive knowledge on it. Living and breathing it does. I've learnt more about rugby league in 2 years lately paying attention to the game than I did in the 12 years I played the sport
I agree 100% with Paul. Phil gets way too much credit. He is no where near the footy head that he appears to be. There are way more intelligent people in the game than him. He is very good at milking the media and the public and for that and that alone is he great
Anyone who does not give Gus credit for the Panthers rebuild has zero idea about RL. Without Gus the Panthers would have been finished years ago. Haters hate. They are the envy of 90% of clubs now. Thank Gus for that.
These guys are criticizing a club and team that are quite successful and are winning 10 games and counting and are currently on top of the ladder and STILL have so much to whine about. When did NRL get so political?
Ask Phil he will tell ya ???
Buz, you can disagree because that's what you do. You look in the mirror every morning & disagree with what you see every time!!
No he doesn’t deserve any credit.
You reckon man? I don’t think the panthers rise over the past couple of seasons was single handedly the work of gus but no doubt he has helped, penrith are currently on top of the ladder and they have been producing some of the best juniors, I don’t think it’s a coincidence. Does he deserve ALL the credit? No. Does he deserve a mention? Yes
This boy must clean Gus's pool...lol
When can we just admit that Gould is HIGHLY OVERRATED? Because he is.
We'll said
A basket case when on the verge of bankruptcy who are almost always a bottom 4 team when he got the club and look where they are when he left. I wonder who changed all that if it wasn't the guy in charge.
@@ARandomGuy24 You're defending a guy who clearly is a hack. He has no new thoughts and does what most "managers" would do anyway. He is nothing special. Like seriously nothing special. Many people bring companies back from bankruptcy.
He goes on talk shows and has no original ideas.
@@bc0150 Who was responsible for the massive turnaround at Penrith? Who prevented the club from going bankrupt? I'm legit asking this question, if it wasn't Gus who do you believe turned the club around out at Penrith?
@@ARandomGuy24 I never said it wasnt. I am saying that if it was gus he did something that people do every single day. I have pulled a company from almost closing to making a profit. He is nothing special. Who ever did that to the club is nothing special. Its just business. If that's the only thing people can say he has done well congrats to him, he joins a long line of middle management who did their job
So from this I take they need to create a New Position, the Czar of Junior Rugby League. A power to it's own, only answerable to the ARLC through KPI"s and bringing through players with good culture and behavior. Ensuring Junior Player welfare and post career player welfare as a side. (Look aft your rugby league veterans).
Don’t like Gus as much as the next bloke but they wouldn’t be where they are without him.
Why is it that kenty always sounds like he 's half sloshed?
He absolutely deserves some credit. He built that club into what it is. But I also think he had to go for it to take that last step and let the head coach be the numero uno.
But Gould will be to blame if the loose the grand final
The guy with the bald head needs a slap on the head think he knows everything
Which one lol
The young 1
Ivan Cleary deserve all the credits. Gould talks too much nonsense
😂🤣😂 ... No
There is one good bloke on this show that I respect. The other three are parasites. I’m not going to mention which one that is because i doubt I need to.
I just wish Phil Gould could stop commentating so I don’t gotta pay for fox just so I don’t gotta here his voice .
I think I understand what you mean
Gus deserves no credit. Panthers fighting for the spoon last year Gus was there. Gus left, and Panthers start performing. Gus Deserves credit for leaving
Panthers can win the premiership this year!
😂sure
Not even a penrith fan but they certainly can! They’ve been on fire this year mate
The storms and Roosters will chew them up in the top 8. It's a different game when the top 8 begins. Experience is everything in rugby
eman X We won’t know until then but if penrith take they’re current form into the finals they’ll be a danger for any side they play against, they’ve already schooled melbourne once this year
@@emanx2600. Panthers are a great chance of Winning the GF this year. From what I've seen far they're the Real Deal.
What success have they had they haven't had any since 2003
They are leading a comp thats had rule changes that suit players that were off the Toyota cup calibre hence the youth penrith have
They had a shocking year last year
But other then that there has not been any success
He's done nothing
Gus should of being sacked as soon as he sold Koroisau!
Time to get out and it give away, stop hanging on to your yesterdays,
Paul Kent is boring to listen to. The way he speaks drives me to sleep.🤣🤣
without johns, barrett, gasnier etc gould does not win origin. He is an overatted "coach" and even worse commentator look at the 2020 grand final somehow he got paid for the very clear failure to perform his role. #passenger.
No
NRL 360 is one of the worst shows, hoted by the biggest flogs it has been my disleasure to watch. It fitd well with the pathetic commentary from the likes of Alexander, Voss and Co.
In fact, the only decent prouct from Fox League is anything put out there by Matty Johns and the boys, the down side being the appearance of Paul Kent.
