I saw a cat documentary in 3 parts (The Story of Cats on ITV). One of the parts was on big cats/other cats than house cats. They showed one type of cat that lived in a swamp like area. It caught fish in muddy waters by dipping its wiskers in the water & could determine the location of the fish (& thus catch the fish) threw the vibrations it felt of the fish, in the water, with its wiskers. It had a bit coarser wiskers than house cats, but not very much. Thought that was really cool. Edit: Checked it upp & the cat is called "fishing cat" & lives in the swamps of Sri Lanka.
When a cats see an object coming towards them, as it gets to be about one foot away from the cat, the whiskers point forward. I have heard that a cat's vision gets blurry at close range, so the whiskers point towards the object to help determine what it is. Try it on your cat. You'll see.
Cats also use there whiskers to mark their territory by rubbing their scent from their whiskers on you. You need more subs cat lessons!!! This is a very neat channel.
Funny enough my big sisters cat has whiskers but my two other cat are actually siblings and they like eyebrow whiskers even my sisters cat dosent have eyebrow whiskers
One time, I pulled my cats' whiskers for fun but they didn't seem to be hurt from it or feel too much pain. Hopefully I didn't hurt them a lot when I did that. :O

From what I understand, if a cat's whiskers can clear an opening, its head can fit. And if its head fits, so can the rest of the body.
