      Canon lore states that lightsabers consist of a *plasma* blade. This makes sense since plasma can be created when a gas gets ionized at high temperatures, energized or subjected to a strong electromagnetic field. Plasma acts somewhat like a hot gas, which expands and cools, just like an ordinary fire. So if a plasma is the base technology of a light saber, it needs to be contained. Since Plasma is composed of charged particles, they can be manipulated by magnetic fields.
      Therefore the lightsaber draws power from a power cell with the kyber crystal channeling and focusing that energy. A force field generated in the hilt captures and redirects the plasma stream back into it’s point of origin.

    You're also forgetting that a lightsaber isn't just technology. It's space-magic, too. The blade and especially its forcefield is also a Force-field, powered by a Force-enabled crystal that is attuned to its wielder as the weapon is constructed. They cannot be mass-produced; each is hand-crafted through Force rituals, usually by its wielder or its wielder's master.
    In Star Wars roleplay, the working assumption of most people I've met (hundreds) is that the Force perfectly contains the plasma. In physics terms, that would mean that all frequencies of radiation coming from the plasma is completely self-contained and recycled back into the plasma with near 100% efficiency-except a small proportion of visible light and sonic energy (purely for effect; a perfectly efficient lightsaber would be black, which does exist in Legends canon). Thus rather than 35 MW of power, actually while the blade is idle, it's only drawing about as much as a typical toy lightsaber in the real world, to cast the light it casts and make the noise it makes (give or take a few watts here and there to ionize the air it passes through, but as I'll explain next, that is actually recovered).
    When it's actually cutting things, it would only generate/consume as much power as is required to precisely ionize (not just vaporize or sublimate) the matter in the kerf the blade consumes as it passes. It would not radiate additional heat even then to boil away surrounding material. So, what happens to the material it does ionize? Well because it's ionized, it can also be controlled by the forcefield, and is then absorbed into the plasma blade and converted into power to recharge the power cell (which is why they last basically indefinitely never needing to be recharged).
    You'll note that in all movies, shows, video games, etc, when a lightsaber sticks in something and begins to *melt* it, the Force User in question closes their eyes and concentrates. The assumption there is that they are using their own Force Abilities to *disrupt* the blade's inherent balance of energy recycling to allow thermal energy to escape into the surrounding material. Or did you think it took Qui-gon that much focus that he had to close his eyes, concentrate, and break into a sweat, just to hold a stick still? In fact, I think there's enough evidence in that Episode I scene to assume he was using yet more Force energy to Absorb Energy to avoid the heat coming off of the modified blade and melting blast door from burning his skin.
    The end result is a 100% efficient (to within any reasonable margin of error) weapon that only outputs bursts of energy when it needs, then immediately reabsorbs just as much energy as it put out by absorbing the ionized matter back into the energy source. Of course this flagrantly violates the 2nd law of thermodynamics... but that's neatly covered by space-magic. ;)
    So, while this was a neat exercise in physics analysis, and maybe taught some kids some critical thinking skills, really I think that if you're going to analyze a fictional weapon, you should really use the actual properties of the weapon within the fiction, don't you think? Especially in a setting with this huge and dedicated a fan base, where people have absolutely worked through these kinds of things in great detail over the decades because we have *way* too much time on our hands. ;)

      Fog Battleship NCarolina I feel like you could also go the comic book route and create an over complicated pseudoscientific explanation. For example you could say that lightsaber are actually only about as hot as a burning red piece of iron, and that they cut by somehow moving matter out of the way through some other means than vaporization or sublimation. Just sort of parting matter on contact by some scientific miracle. And that the heat is just a by product caused by this effect.

    You made a joke that by lighting the LightSaber, the heat from the blade would set you on fire. If the blade was just plasma, you would be right.
    But, in the canon, there is a field around the blade which allows mater to move through but stops energy (which is why lightsabers can stop blasters and other lightsabers).
    That field would also abosrb the energy from the blade and thus even if it is turned on, you would not be feeling the heat from the blade unless you actually touched it.
    I don't know how this information would change the rest of your theory on the effects of the lightsaber on Qui-Gon Jin though

      This is why I keep posting a response anytime I see something regarding lightsabers.
      Lucas envisioned them as glowy cutting weapons, literally a "laser-sword" and the whole plasma and heat thing was retconned in I believe to make it seem more realistic, just like our friends the midichlorians.
      Here's the thing, I don't believe that lightsabers are plasma based at all. Their unique properties of both being able to cut through blast doors like butter and NOT setting the whole room on fire come from the blade not being a magnetic toroid containing plasma but instead being composed of the force field technology that SW has mastered.
      Lightsabers don't contain a plasma basin, and throughout all media it's always been said that sabers only lose power from their highly refined hilt power packs when the blade makes contact with something, interrupting the closed loop. This would not be the case if plasma composed the center of the blade, nor the power expended in keeping a tightly wound magnetic field always on. Not to mention that a magnetic saber would attract everything metal in the vicinity.
      No, the best solution is kind of the one Lucas originally envisioned, and was somewhat expanded upon in the old EU material. Lightsaber blades are just highly focused ray shields/force fields, explaining their ability to reflect blaster bolts or melt metal. The color of the blade is caused by the focusing crystal.
      A firesaber like Kylo Ren's is due to the unstable focusing crystal causing power arcs to erupt from the force field blade.

Maybe science cannot always properly prove or explain an observed phenomenon - but in this instance it can properly disprove (reasonably rule out) a suicidally impractical speculative phenomenon. 35MW seems like a fair approximation and even if the numbers are off by a few orders of magnitude the results of lightsaber combat would basically work out pretty much as they're described in the video.

That it's a supernatural, mystical weapon like king Arthur's Excalibur, the sacred sword of the Japanese emperor said to be originally the weapon given to Amaterasu omikami by her brother Susanoo-no-mikoto-sama after he slain oroachi the eight headed dragon, spear of Odin to name a few. Ada Kloosterman - Agreed, the light saber blade is very tightly controlled, so controlled that the saber presents absolutely no harm when turned on, and there’s no sign of any radiating heat given off by the saber. It has to have some very specialized containment field that limits or eliminates radiating heat and confines it to the blade to the point that it only does damage when coming into contact with a surface or object.

It was changed from ESB on that the lightsabers are considered so hot they cauterize wounds instantly.

  • @TheUmbroDragon
    @TheUmbroDragon Před 6 lety +332

    So , A lightsaber acts like a light beam made of plasma from what is observed. In the movies its portrayed to cauterized and melt everything besides itself . If it did put out that much energy with the technology that we know of today. Not only would it set us on fire it would explode the reactor that it was coming out of.
    Unless there is more to the tech than a simple plasma blade. Sure there is need of Keiber crystals (Hope that is how its spelt), But what if it uses other tech from the universe that we are not thinking about.
    I notice from the prequels there is a shield that covers the gungan army. People could go in and out, but blasters and bombs do not go through. In fact, when the shield is hit, it doesn't seem to even generate heat from the blasts around the shield .
    SO, what if the Lightsaber's beam actually has this shield around it that grows and contains the heat and the blade from expanding , but objects and people can go through the beam and get sliced . It would also explain why the Lightsaber can deflect blasters and other lightsabers.
    So, to be able to wield a lightsaber is still possible if we can figure out what this Shield is and how it functions.
    Thoughts?

      Kyle, I really like your show. However on your explanation, I offer a counter to that. What if there is something to training to be a Jedi and that being able to use the Force is integral to the ability to wield a light-saber? I posit that only through this training is it possible to contain and deflect the heat of a Jedi's weapon. Therefore it is possible to use a light-saber without harming the user. Now I know that you might be thinking that this would be mean that they should be immune to attacks from other sabers as well but lets suppose that a Jedi is using all of his power and concentration to contain and control the deadly effects of his blade so he has to rely solely on his skill and swordsmanship to defend against an attack. I would be interested to hear your feedback on this. Keep up the great work!

      If I remember correctly the Gungan shield did not reflect the shots but instead it diffused the energy that the shots imparted on it. It looked more like water when something dropped in it. So if lightsabers did this they would still cut and maybe even clash with other lightsabers but blaster shots would be absorbed. This was all from memory so if im wrong let me know.

    Fun theory: The Jedis learn to dynamically manipulate the output of different areas of the saber using the Force. So when melting a blast door, for example, they only allow the parts of the saber that are touching or inside of the door to get ultra hot, leaving your hands and face unharmed. This would help explain what makes them so difficult to wield and why so much training is involved; you'd have to be mentally manipulating different parts of the saber like crazy during battle just to make sure you didn't obliterate yourself.
    This makes Jedi fights even more fascinating; on top of what you see there'd be a whole mental game of "chicken" going on of balancing the energy to be as hot as you can stand without burning yourself.

    I once heard it said that a lightsaber is pure energy from power cells that is focused through the Kyber crystal. There are superconductors in the hilt that regulate the temperature of the blade and keep it cool. The blade's ability to melt through a blast door, as demonstrated in The Phantom Menace, happens by the energy of the blade exciting the molecules in the durasteel and said molecules vibrate, causing friction and heat, therefore causing the doors to melt. It was a canon explanation before Disney threw the E.U. out, but at least at the time it perfectly explained the attributes of the lightsaber blade. Changing it to super heated plasma seems to be more problematic, at least in my opinion

    I'm sending this video to some former RPG (pen & paper) players. It's been years but you really nailed my arguments. They didn't like how I had to modify "laser swords" meaning most of the glow was a containment field and power was drawn as it was used and applied to actually form the "blade" during its use. It's a science-fiction RPG, not a fantasy one, people. I wish I saw this video back then. I did shut them up in an earlier situation with a more realistic "phaser" with a disintegration setting found on a mission.

    This is my debate. The lightsaber is yes powerful but to understand it we need to look at the kybercrystal, it contains and controls the power through the force it’s alive. It emits a blade when the lightsaber is made because the kyber can’t emit its power any were else (also the saber itself is surging the kybercrystals power to its exit) is forcing a blade, the saber conducts the energy and forces it through but will not make the victims explode its controlled and contained energy is forcing the crystal to emit a force to stop surging all that power the saber is weakened and yet it stops the victims from exploding yet also stopping the bleeding because the conducted plasma forces the wound (that makes the target bleed) is closed yet making it like it is in the movies

  • @feranoks
    @feranoks Před 6 lety +279

    According to lore and lightsaber descriptions, the blade itself does not give off heat. You can't use to warm your hands for instance. Only when touching doesn it burn. So catching on fire shouldn't be a problem.
    And containing this heat is something they have the technology to do apperantly since Jedi Initiates were given practice sabers that would only singe or cause mild burns through the use of containment fields.
    Lore out!

    • @gavinjenkins899
      @gavinjenkins899 Před 6 lety +39

      That's all well and good when just standing there, but as soon as you use it to cut anything, it MUST cause that removed matter to go somewhere, no matter how it's being done. If it was contained fully at all times, it would just bounce off of people and walls. So at some point, it must transfer enough energy to vaporize anything it touches, which would still cause vapor explosions and so on and so forth. And if the thing it's cutting has a sufficiently high vaporization point, like steel, the amount of energy it would have to let through at a minimum to do that would still probably burn everyone in the room (because the vaporized stuff wouldn't be contained, even if the plasma remains contained afterward, and the vaporized door gas would still scald you)

    • @feranoks
      @feranoks Před 6 lety +18

      Oh yeah totallly agree. I was just talking about people going up in flames when close to a lightsaber. I totally agree with everything that happens at the point of contact.

    • @SteveWhetstone-UXDesigner
      @SteveWhetstone-UXDesigner Před 6 lety +10

      it could be the really hot part of the light saber is actually less than 1mm diameter in the center of a much thicker diameter magnetic heat containment shell. The electromagnetic containment would be circular polarize around a very very thin of high temp high energy plasma. That would also explain why light sabers don't just pass through each other and you can block one light saber with a parry by another.

    • @gandurk
      @gandurk Před 6 lety +8

      Steve Whetstone it could also explain why wielders use so much force as to actually reach targets with the small energy beam as you propose. In tfw kylos crossguards appear to be failing to penetrate finns shoulder even though causing great pain, which, as you suggest, may be down to the containment field around the beam stopping it from simply buttering through, but that enough energy escapes to cause pain and burns to finn

    • @johnoshack2429
      @johnoshack2429 Před 6 lety +6

      Isak Monstad I had read that the crossguard of kylos lightsaber is only a ventilation which stabilizes the main blade (because of the cracked kyber crystal, so it cannot be considered a actual blade, so maybe thats why it fails to penetrate finns shoulder. Just my opinion.

    • @ryandunn4848
      @ryandunn4848 Před 6 lety +9

      An energy sword and a lightsaber are pretty much the exact same thing except the energy sword is designed to cathch the blade of the enemy's sword to throw them off guard, like how the energy sword has two blades that meet in a parallel point.

  • @vanyac6448
    @vanyac6448 Před 2 lety +1

    Actually, in Star Wars lore, lightsabers don't slice by delivering heat to the target, they slice because the plasma blade loops back into the hilt, creating a gyroscopic effect. This gyroscopic effect makes lightsabers difficult to handle, but it also subtly pushes molecules of whatever the lightsaber is cutting into, aside. At least it does so if handled correctly, because in Episode 6, Luke's lightsaber bounces off of some railings during his duel with Vader.

    I don’t like to be picky about pseudoscience but this is a misconception that I see too often, about the energy a lightsaber should radiate.
    According to the official star wars sources, including the now non-canon Legends (which are canon unless something “more canon” says otherwise) the lightsaber does not generate heat outwards, there’s a containment field around the plasna that shapes it into a blade, and so the plasma cutting effect only happens when the blade makes contact with an object.

    • @10dschr
      @10dschr Před 6 lety +49

      You'd still explode if stabbed with one, the field breaks around the place it hits so that it can cut things. The only thing that wouldn't happen is everyone around it being set on fire when it's turned on.

    • @ajaquino85
      @ajaquino85 Před 6 lety +23

      If it was a fully closed system then it wouldn't be able to cut/burn though metal or people. From the visual effects it obviously uses heat to cut. And with how fast they cut body parts it would still be vaporizing chunks of matter enough to cause the exploding effect,

    • @ErizotDread
      @ErizotDread Před 6 lety +4

      There must be some limit to the amount of energy it can ever release on contact with matter, because otherwise, Qui-Gon would have melted through the blast door in a nanosecond, and probably destroyed the whole donut+donut hole ship they were on! lol

    • @gnom1146
      @gnom1146 Před 6 lety +5

      So where does the heat go then? You have to disperse that amount of heat somewhere, unless you want you lightsaber to explode. You can't magically contain the heat that plasma generates in a small box, in any box for that matter, it has to go somewhere.

    • @Mernom
