Had my first liberty in 1965 as an 18 year old sailor deployed with the USS FORT MARION LSD 22. Lots of fun memories. Fell in love and out of love a number of times. My youth will always be tied with this city and Subic Bay. I made 3 deployments and those memories are very dear to me. I wish I could go back in time as be 18 again.

Thanks Navy Vet. This brings back years of life 74-79 of living there in and out off the ships. I loved being there and loved the people there. Filipinos are some of the most wonderful people on the Earth. Some of the best times of my life were in Olongapo and Subic Bay. One day I'll be gone from this Earth and the Filipino Peoples will live on being a most wonderful and fun loving people...If only the world would know and protect them.

New subscriber here... Aerographers Mate aboard the USS Midway from 74-76. Glad I found found your video. Back then the streets were dirt and martial law was still in effect but I loved this place (of course I did at 19/20 years old). As a wet behind the ears kid, I thought Olongapo City was PARADISE! Everything about the place was perfect; the beautiful woman, friendly people, the climate, and you could live for a week on 20 bucks. And let's not forget just how damn good the Filipino bands were! Never have I danced so much or drank so many San Miguels!! I had a chance to spend two weeks Christmas vacation there in 75 and I damn near didn't leave. While I appreciate the video it saddens me to some degree to see how progress has changed the City. Thank Navy Vet!

I just visited Subic and Olongapo. Was stationed there for 7 months just as the base was closing in 91. I'll be honest, don't waste a trip coming to Subic/Olongapo. It was a little depressing for me. I have such great memories from that time. There is nothing here left from those days. The Freeport has some decent restaurants and shopping but it's just not worth traveling here if you are nostalgic for the old Subic/Olongapo that we all remember. There are so many other, more beautiful places to visit in the Philippines. I recommend Bohol, Dumeguete, Palawan, etc.

Who would have thought it would happen to us. I'm 49 and feel I've lived 10 Lives so far. Anyways good luck thanks for sharing. For those of us it does mean something. There are thousands of us who have thought about tracing the footsteps of our glory days many times between now and whenever then was." - You practically read my mind!! I still have dreams of my adventures overseas while in the US Navy from Jan. '79 to Sept. '82. Sometimes I dream that I'm back on the ships I served on and other times I dream I'm back in PI, Hong Kong, Tokyo, etc., etc., Still I'd love to go back to PI and see what's it like IN PERSON and not through videos or pictures....thanks for posting what I feel inside!!

In the afternoon the heat was overwhelming at times but we survived. At night couldn’t see your hand in front of face so dark in the jungle. And who could forget humping up the seven steps to heaven. And JEST school learning how to survive in the jungle hanging out with Negritos. More fun than Okinawa. Semper Fi

Many fine times in Olongapo. The U & I was my favorite place. The Rodono and Omali family were great folks. When they opened the Villa Rovisa at Halfmoon Bay my friends and I on the USS Markab (AR-23) were the first ones to stay there back in 1968. No electricity out there then. Over the years it changed with the real wild times and then martial law. On my last cruise there on the USS Enterprise (CVN-65) in 1987 Auntie Connie remembered me and we threw the most awesome three day CPO Mess party ever. Bittersweet memories. Found out my favorite GF made it to the states and lives in Kentucky. All good.

Hello Navy Vet and thanks for the great video....I came thru on the USS Okinawa Wespac 85 we stopped over twice for 30 days each and it was a Liberty Port for us we were very lucky to be here when the country was not at war.....As a US Marine our only job was to go for a run on the Flight Deck maybe twice a week the rest of the time we were off duty. I am living here now in North Caloocan City...it's a tough culture to adjust to and there are no Foreigners where I live here but it's super cheap to live here..I too have a channel teaching prospective expats what it is like to live full time in the Philippines.

semper fi. I arrived there in 85 and left in 87. Bravo company 3rd platoon cubic point marine barracks. I got to see the revolution first hand and also the so called workers strike in 86. Spent a week trying to get back onto the base. Got shot at a few times, several fights. Finally left olongapo, went to Manila, and got a military flight back to subic bay. Other than that it was good times. Looking back I think we pulled a MUC and a NUC out of that couple of months in early 86. The rest was red horse, chicken on a stick, vias tacos, and the bar scene.

Many thanks for yur comment. Lots has changed here, but the people are still nice and friendly. Don’t sit and be depressed, hop on a plane and come to the Philippines. Besides the airfare you don’t have to spend a lot, hotels are fairly inexpensive and if you are staying an extended period they are usually willing to offer you a discount. You can eat three squares for about $10 a day, and for entertainment to can go to the beach or watch a free show at the mall, which they have several times a week.

Left RP in 76', when my dad got sent to Guam. Dad was stationed at NSD. I remember vividly the sh*t river and the girls and little kids in the Banca boats, though at 6 yo did not really understand it. Remember the stories told of being in the go-go clubs front and center stage, at that age. A bunch of NAVY guys were escorted out, when they tried moving me, because I WAS in one of their spots. When your filipino Uncle is president of the Olangapo Bar Association possibly had something to do with that. Used to live in a complex behind Pauline's, in my dad's earlier tours, then lived in Binictican on his later ones. Oh, the stories my dad would share...

But I plan to visit Olongapo and Barrio Barretto. Subic City was my hang out. But it's pretty much dead now. I remember when it was still a dirt road going through the bar section of town. My hang outs were the Jupiter and High Times Inn. I had a steady gal at High Times,,,lol,,

If you two are interested contact a CZcams channel called my pi dream. He's also a retired U.S. air force. When you and your wife plan to buy one of the former model home you have to make way for a car port including do some touch up inside of the house. The video clip of the two former model homes is how to make banana chips but that's half way of the video clip at the beginning of the video vlog is two model homes.

I TOO WAS ONBOARD THE USS MIDWAY, and lived with my girlfriend for 3+ years (...so desperately wanted to get married, ...BUT didn't [In retrospect I wondered ""IF" she ever really did...]); I learned so much Tagalog (NOT TAG-LISH...) that some people thought that I was a local. We lived in Barrio Barretto.
GOD HOW I MISSED THIS PALCE. I often dreamed about returning to see the changes, ..especially afterthe Pinatubo eruption.
