  • I can kill standing still - it's easy
    I can scare with a stare - it's easy
    Hey Ringo, it's sad, though
because it's hard to walk tall when you're small
whether dressed in disciplined style, oh never mind
when you're small you walk as if you're falling 1
I attack from the back because it's easy
and I can assail while wearing very nice jewelry
    Hey Ringo, it's sad, though
because it's hard to walk tall when you're small
whether dressed in disciplined style, oh never mind
when you're small you spend your life crawling 1
    I burst into public bars
and I throw my weight around
...but and no one can even see me
no one can even see me
    nobody can see me
    no one can see me
success is just a mess 2
Hey Ringo gringo, it's sad though
because it's hard to walk tall
    when you're small
    whether dressed in disciplined style
    oh never mind
    when you're small
you're bound to look appalling 3
So compadre, please do this for me
compadre, please weep for me 4

Morrissey’s B-Sides for You Are the Quarry are the best of his career they’re as good as the album tracks.

It's funny to see so many people love him and it's even more funny to see how many people HE hates !!!

@@bibolehabib He is one of the few people that even if I know they hated me, I'd still love them. I know that he is a problematic figure, and I personally disagree with many of his opinions. Nonetheless, his music is something that I cannot live without, his lyrics are so deep, ironic, so different than everything else. In fact, whenever I'm happy or sad, I always can turn to his songs to feel better. That's it... Feel free to disagree 🙂

      @@jvfg170 You're quite amazing, man!
How could I disagree with anything you've said? It's so perfectly said and written.
In fact, I feel the same way: I loved him too much to ever hate him. I just know that I have no intention of becoming a vegetarian, even though I try to avoid meat more than I used to. And I hate it when he says things like "We've never been so close to the Smiths"!
But, of course, his words can affect anyone. Elvis Costello once said: "Morrissey can write good songs, but he can't write a real song". I half agree. Solo, he's written a lot of good songs and often one or two good verses. Sometimes he only writes one verse which he repeats and ends up yodelling, doing his weird screams, moans etc.
He shouldn't spit on the Smiths. He's free not to want to reform them (anyway, it's too late now with the loss of the mighty Andy, such a great bass player, but people were only talking about Marr & Moz!).
His career is magnificent, but he's never had a better guitarist than Johnny Marr. What's more, with the Smiths, they really said everything there was to say in four albums: loneliness, meat is murder, death, love...
He also lost Alan White and Gary Day.
As a musician, I can only say that his best musicians are gone. But, again, he can just say that he's become more Latino than rock. He can say whatever he wants, but we know he won't admit to many things, even though he seems to be a man who is not afraid of anything.
Anyway... he's not the only genius!
Captain Sensible is just as intelligent as he is, and certainly a much better musician.
      And David Byrne.
I'm not going to make a full list, but as a music lover, I'm glad I'm not just a Morrissey fan. His fans sometimes sound like a cult. And I'm not sure they really know who he is!
But he's very important to me too. And, after all, hating people is his job.

    • @jvfg170

@@bibolehabib Oh, thanks for the words! I actually don't know some of these musicians you've mentioned, since I'm not from the anglophone world, but I'm certainly going to look for them. By the way, I was very sad last week when I read about Rourke's passing. It was for me as if a family member had died.
Turning my attention back to Morrissey, there are a few things about him that still play some sort of trick on me. I'm not sure if he really knows what he is doing, or if he has one or two mental disorders that, for one side, help him to create, but to the other, make him feel apathy for the others in a narcissistic way. Sometimes it just seems that he is not a real person. You've quoted a statement affirming that Morrissey can't write a real song, and I also half agree with this position, because he is, at a certain extent, something not real. For most of his life, he never engaged in a relationship, despite being a symbol of beauty in the 80's; he also maintained, for a long period, the image of an androgynous person, incorruptible, infallible to pleasure; when people say, e.g. "A" is good, he promptly responds with "A" is bad and vice-versa. In short, he does (almost) everything that society (or at least a considerable chunk of it) considers the norm. A sort of "outsider", maybe...
He is very ironic in his songs, but in one of them, he once said "I'm not a man, I'm something much bigger than a man". Does he really think it of himself? Is it just a character, an irony? Sometimes he even supports ideas that contradict what he sings. He is a very complex man, I simply can't understand who he really is.
I've downloaded his autobiography one of these past months, but I still haven't finished reading it. But being truly sincere, I don't know if I really want to. I feel like I have more important things to do in my own life instead of chasing down information and discussions about artists and other famous people. I like him, I like his music, I admire his work, I share some thoughts with him (I'm a vegetarian, but not because of him) I disagree with many other things. But you know what? At the end of the day, he is he, I am I, he has his life, I have mine. I see him as a human being, even if he doesn't view himself as such.
Just to end my commentary, I pretty much like his new songs as much as I like the old ones, but I totally agree with you. The Smiths really said everything it was to say. Johnny Marr declared in an interview that Smiths' music is somehow immortal, mainly because they didn't follow the trends, not as a base for their work, and their themes were and still are universal. It's because of these factors, I believe, that they never get out of fashion, like some pop songs or musicians whose only interest is to make money.
I'm also a music lover and musician, it's very pleasing to know that there are other people like me (and other different, as well) around the world. I listen to rock, indie, edm, pop, folk, sertanejo raíz, caipira, bossa nova, national anthems, etc. A bit too diverse hahaha.
It was very good chatting to you!
      Salutations du Brésil !
