  • Torticollis is a condition where the muscles on one side of the neck contract, causing the head to tilt to one side. If left untreated, Torticollis can cause long-term issues with feeding and delays in the achievement of infants' developmental milestones. BUT it can be treated with Occupational or Physical Therapy!
    In this video, Dr. Sarah demonstrates two stretches you can try at home to support your infant's treatment. However, if you are concerned that your baby might have Torticollis, it is important that you you seek an evaluation from a trained Occupational or Physical Therapist.

    Hello. I think my newborn has this and we just noticed it yesterday, (Saturday,) before being released from hospital. She is 3 days old and we have the first visit with pediatrician tomorrow on Monday, in which I plan to bring this to the doctor's consideration.
    Are these stretches appropriate for a newborn? Thank you so much for your time and help. As a new parent, this information is very appreciated!

      Yes, our OTs start treatment and use these stretches with newborns. You might not be able to hold the stretch for quite as long, so just pay attention to how much your infant tolerates.

    My daughter doesn't have the tilt so much facing head on like you mentioned, but she can't seem to turn her head to the left without tilting forward when she turns. If she looks in that direction, her head dips forward to where she's kind of looking up to the left, rather than straight over to the left. If that makes sense? It gives the illusion that her head suddenly got so heavy and she can barely hold it up, if that paints a clearer visual at all. Could this still be an indicator of torticollis without her showing the generalized tilt?

      Thanks so much for reaching out! Based on your infant's tolerance, severity of torticollis, age, etc., we typically holding the stretches for 2-3 minutes and complete them 2-3 times a day. However, it totally depends on your baby's unique needs and so we recommend reaching out to an occupational therapist or physical therapist in your area for an individualized treatment plan.

    • @emergepediatrictherapy

      Thank you so much for reaching out! If you have concerns about torticollis we recommend reaching out to your pediatrician and receiving an occupational therapy or physical therapy referral to provide the best quality care. You can also contact our office and set up a phone call with Dr. Sarah if you have further questions. If your child has a preference for looking to the left side (which is categorized as right side torticollis) then for the second stretch, you would be focusing on bending the infant's neck to the left hand side. If your child has a preference for looking to the right hand side, then you would focus on bending the infant's neck to the right hand side. It can definitely be a little confusing so if your child is demonstrating a preference turning to one side or a frequent tilt to one side we would recommend seeking further care.

    • @newyorkphysicaltherapy5072
      @newyorkphysicaltherapy5072 Před rokem +2

      You actually would be stretching the baby the other way as the torticollis was a left torticollis (defined by the sidebend component (tilt to Left) thus you would stretch the left side into ride sidebend - so just the opposite to what is being shown for the second stretch.

    My daughter is 8months now. She wasn’t born with this and I have pictures and videos of her with her head positioned appropriately. About two weeks ago I noticed that she Tilts her head more to the right. She rotates the head if I move from one side to the other but I kind of notice a consistent preference of her tilting it to the right shoulder even when she sits down or walks in her walker. I became concerned as any parent would. Planing to see the doctor on Tuesday. In the mean time since she tilts rights should I follow the guide here and try as much stretch practice with her more to tilt left and is it good to make her lay on her left side so that the head or neck will lean left…. Advice.
