  • Here is the way I count Simon Phillips 33/8 which for me technically is a 33/16 split by 17+16 (or 17/16+4/4), the shuffle parts have still the same tempo but subdivided different (the 33/16 can be mantained with dotted eight note instead of dotted quarter and 11/8 instead of 11/4, but this def sounds indeed like a triplet 11/4 shuffle), there is also a nice hemiola near the end on the shuffle parts which gives the ilusion he plays 4/4 over the triplets. Have fun counting.

    It is so:
    1 bar in 4/4
    1 bar in 3/4
    1 bar in 3/8
    2 bars in 4/4
    200 bpm quarter note ca.
    Or...
    1 bar in 6/4
1 bar in 5/8 (the one on the octoban)
    2 bars in 4/4
The second section is in 5 dotted half note (15/4) + 3/8

I once broke down the maths that I was hearing as according to the length of the drum phrasing by Philips and this video doesn't follow that order necessarily. But it does offer a clearer and easier way of hearing Simon's phrasing against the pulse and also emphasizes the true lenght of the 33 count. Great video, great aid and great upload

I count the A section as 7/16, 5/8 and 4/4 looped. I count the B section as 2 bars of 12/16 and a bar of 9/16 looped (with all 16th notes in groups of 3). For me, that's the simplest possible way to think about this piece.
