- To anyone who loves music theatre, 'G&S' means melody, irreverence, wit and fun. Essgee Entertainment has thoroughly updated the Victorian operetta allowing today's theatregoer a fresh look at this classic. All the original songs and tunes are included though and despite the 'pop feel' of many of the chorus numbers the most beautiful solos are untouched. The end product is true to the spirit of Gilbert and Sullivan, but much more accessible for today’s audiences.

The EssGee version of Pirates of Penzanze is operetta for people who hate operettas and a special treat for those who love them, extra jokes and lyrics while keeping all the best bits of the show we adore.
This just cropped up in my feed and made my day. I live for the day we can safely see shows like this once again. Hang on in there, Opera Australia!
still the best updated version of a G&S operetta so funny I think G& S would be watching from the wings and laughing so much, I miss jon English he added such a diferent aspect to these operettas RIP Jon, I saw them when they toured NZ fabulous
I quite agree. Gilbert and Sullivan would have heartily approved.
This is pure gold. Even if Simon Gallagher looks stupid.
No better version. Jon English will own The Pirate King forever.
I was watching this thinking I would nod off and go to sleep. That didn't happen but I am exhausted. But fully satiated! So was the Audience!
What a fantastic production!
I've always thought of the multiple encores of Cat Like Tread to be the 'conductor's revenge'
Absolutely my favourite version do so wish they would re release it on dvd for the European market. Did have it on vhs but it’s no longer playable due to machine being obsolete now.
It is available, along with HMS Pinafore and The Mikado, all three with Jon England. It is a bit pricey...Amazon and eBay.
@@onemercilessming1342 thanks but it’s not available on region 2, did have a multi region DVD player but when the U.K. changed its services it no longer worked.
The funniest police Sargent was one in the Pirate Movie.
A M A ZING!!!!
This is my absolute favorite version of this play! I had this on VHS as a kid but i'm not sure what year it is from, any info on that?
1994
Haha same
And Tony Azito was the most funniest police Sargent too.
He was unique.
Awesome
that was certainly a great performance
Amazing people in australia
Kevin Kline was less comic/slapstick and more libidinous. Both he and Jon English were great in their way.
I think the choreography in the NY Pirates was better, but the dynamics (choral and orchestral) in "With catlike tread" was superior in the Australian production.
George Rose killed the Major General role.
This is brilliant. Reminds me of a D'Oyly Carte last performance of the season. Pinafore set, pirates costumes and business from most of the others. Dick Deadeye was decidedly effeminate and Ralph Rackstraw was as deformed as I have ever seen.
During the curtain calls, the stage crew struck the set until, at the very end, there was nothing of the set left on stage, all the way back to the brick wall.
Turns out it can be bought in digital form www.essgee.com/html/Videoshoppingpage1.html for anyone that's interested
are the rights available to community theatre groups ?
+Royalbrettania Yes, they are! If you live in UK or Ireland, we manage the rights (www.stagescripts.com), but for anywhere else go to www.davidspicer.com
great thank you for responding ! I am " anywhere" else !!! our group has to pick a musical for 2017 ! next year is Camelot :) .... but this looks really fantastic !
Rex Smith was the best frederic and Linda Rondstad was the best Mabel so true to top that australia.
Sorry, but I saw the Shakespeare in the Park version that was later filmed in studio with most of the same cast. It was well done and enjoyable, but EssGee Productions trilogy (Pirates of Penzance, The Mikado, and HMS Pinafore) are very well done, indeed.
Box Office receipts said that we did, Martin
Kevin Kline the best Pirate King ever.
