  • I like floating my pieces on a wooden frame that I've stretched with canvas. Here is that process with my finished piece, "Flow".

    After graduating from Parsons School of Design, I began my career in fashion design and freelanced both in New York City, as well as London. I designed hand knits for Elle Magazine and was the editor of the Hand Knit Page before hand knits fell out of fashion in the early 1990's and the page was discontinued. In 2008 I launched my jewelry design business, designing fine jewelry in 18 & 20 Kt Gold with gemstones that I hand select for each piece. Several awards and numerous write ups & interviews in all kinds of magazines and online zines, I rediscovered hand stitching and my life took another turn. I have been designing in some form since I sold my first felt embroidered xmas tree ornaments to a small shop in Northern California when I was 16 years old, and have never looked back. And while I've had detours along the way: had two children, worked at an advertising agency, got into acting in my early 20's, published some articles for various magazines and wrote for the Huffington Post for a few years, I have always come back to designing. It is my first love and remains so to this day.

    VERY VERY nice. I know that I'm subscribed, but this is the first On The Other Hand that I've seen in quite a while. Wonderful to see this one finished and framed. "Africa"........well, I think that there's no doubt that if that's the title that you go with, that it will certainly remind you of your Mom considering the whole "connection" between the trip and her. Neither can ever be separated. Blessings to you

      Hi Alice, yes I needed to take a break from everything as I'd been working hard 7 days a week 12-16 hour days and was totally burned out. I'll be back at some point, but need to find a balance that works.

    • @alicemoline698
      @alicemoline698 Před 2 lety +1

      Good for you, I say with a superlative CHEER. Some of "us" know in our heart of hearts that we need a break but either we don't have the courage or the wherewith all to just do it FOR "ourselves" and we keep plodding along day by day, not totally realizing the self destruction that we're doing, mentally, physically, and emotionally. We think that by doing this that we're being strong and tough, carrying the victory flag of "we are women". We need to realize that taking a break does NOT mean raising the white flag of defeat. It's the absolute greatest kindness that we can do FOR "ourselves", right?!?!?!?! So KUDOS to you for paving the way and being as transparent as you have always been with all of us. I know all about finding a balance that works...........I definitely do not want to be that man on the Ed Sullivan Show with all of those poles, balancing spinning plates and trying to keep every single one of them from smashing to the ground. And Lord knows that we have poles and we have plates.......many many many. Praying that you find a balance that works for you. For me, structure seems to do it.......the ole "if it's Belgium, it must be Tuesday kind of thing"......if it's Monday, it's laundry and ironing day, Tuesday is baking day, Wednesday is vacuuming and dusting day, Thursday is shopping day, Friday is bill paying and filing day, Saturday is yard sale day, Sunday is church day. If I structure my a.m.'s to a particular task, then it's very surprising just how much time I have left for the rest of each day. If I ignore this routine, then it all becomes to be too much.......like trying to eat an elephant all at one time instead of one bite at a time. OF COURSE, my structure has serendipity woven into every thread of each day. It's not cast in concrete, I do allow myself flexibility. BUT I need to be mindful if I don't pay attention to the "vintage dish towel adages" for household chores, that my life goes amuck really fast and takes a luge ride that's not easy to come back from. When I saw those dish towels with those daily chores embroidered on them, I wondered if it'd work for me, so I gave it a try. Everyone has to find their own balance that works and I know that you will. Blessings to you. Inhale, breathe and live in the flow of Mercy and Grace.

      Thx so much Christine. This summer kind of flew by. I was teaching up until the end of July then needed to take time off as I was completely burnt out and then one thing after the other happened with our home, leaks from upstairs neighbors, AC dying, and on and on, so it's just been non-stop. I will be back in the late fall/early winter. Thanks for thinking of me. ❤️

    I wonder what happens to all this gorgeous, really exquisite work: do you exhibit the pieces or sell them or are they for personal enjoyment? I love your videos & this style of embroidery. The whole process somehow reminds me of Margaret Fabrizio & the quilts she makes if you don't mind me saying so. Thanks for showing me that there's more to embroidery than flowers... 😀

    Well done, Ariane! Your stitching is an inspiration to me. The improvisational creativity has opened the flood gates for me. (I still get kind of paralyzed placing larger elements of a designed piece, though. I’m currently working on a “tide pool” with lots of borrowing from your “river rocks.”) Your channel, your freedom are gifts and I thank you! Take good care of yourself; art needs time to rest and breathe.

    This is wonderful Ariane, I thought you had moved away from your stitching into abstract painting so to see your work combining the two makes me really happy. Yesterday I picked up piece that had languished for months and added some more fibres , a small bit of overdyed silk scarf I felted in and some sort of stretchy knitting stuff I had also dyed. This morning the plan is to stitch them down but first I checked CZcams and here you are displaying your gorgeous work. Serendipitous or what?

    Wow! I love, love, love this beautiful, colorful, complicated and bright project! I stare at it every day because there are so many beautiful things to look at! I just started embroidering a couple months ago and can't stop thinking about how much I loved it! Then, I was toodling around CZcams and found you. I love your work, your teaching style, and can't wait to delve into abstract art. I have one question, where would I get fabric like what you used in this project? Or, what type of fabric is it and did you dye it? I would like to get fabric such as this if you can direct - in any colors, I don't know much about fabrics yet. Will you be having any classes soon in embroidery? I don't see any on your website. Again, love your work! Seriously, I'm so inspired by your designs, colors, style, etc. THANK YOU for making me even more serious about this craft!!!

      Hi Cathy, thanks so much!
      My favorite source of hand painted linens is from my friend Pat Pauly: www.patpauly.com/shop?category=Linen+Fabric. For prepared for dyeing linen I use Testfabrics.
      In 2023 I will start doing workshops again, and will likely post them later in the fall/early winter. I know that I will be teaching my Improvisational Stitching workshop and my Finding Your Voice workshop. I may even develop a few new ones, but I'm taking a much needed break, so I haven't thought all of that completely through.
