Excellent real world test. Agree active battery cooling needs to be managed better by the software.
Could be easy fix! Software upgrade
BYD naming it the "intelligent cooling system" is just inaccurate.
avarage intellect cooling system doesn't sound right, right?
I wonder if it'll be able to beat tesla world record on Nürburgring 😂
I'm assuming you own one and can make a qualified statement concerning BYD.
Intelligent; like a rock :3
@@curtisslaughter6014 He without sin can cast the first stone.
I doubt you own one and can argue against their point.
Thanks for the test Bjorn!
We have an Atto 3 here in Australia (as well as a Tesla Model 3) and have some thoughts as an owner:
1. The fogging issue is absolutely real and very annoying. They released an OTA update about a month ago which was meant to fix it, but actually made it worse. Apparently another is coming within a month.
2. Your consumption seems really high. At 110kmh (the limit here), I’m probably around 180-190Wh/km.
3. The charging curve seems similar, but for some reason slightly different. For example we (multiple Aussie owners) get 88-89kw max. It’s close to what you got of course, but I wonder why it wouldn’t be identical.
4. The Model Y is about 50% more expensive ($50k vs $75k), so it’s value proposition is quite good. No way would I choose it over the Y at the same price though.
5. I’ve found that for single-stop trips (say 500km), the Atto is pretty much as fast as the Tesla thanks to having such a flat charging curve. As you have demonstrated, rapid gating becomes a problem for longer distances.
6. Lane centering sucks.
Is this issue more the case when temperature outside is really high?
Damn, Atto 3 and Model Y cost the same in Sweden. 550,000 kronor for both.
@@Blasterxp I’ve never done a long enough road trip to encounter this issue.
Does the Atto 3 have the "one-pedal" or it doesn't like the Dolphin?
@@RossanoNana it does have some regen when you take your foot off the pedal, but it’s quite weak so I wouldn’t call it one pedal driving.
Great video! We have Atto 3 and the window fog situation is so true sometimes! Those aftermarket lights blocking the cooling vents don't seem like a great idea though. I'd think, when it comes to cooling, the less one disrupts airflow the better it is.
Another banger. Thanks for the experience and the ride along. All the best.
How can a single user (Bjorn) find soo many mistakes so fast, I know Bjorn is an expert on this field, but BYD is supposed to be a Tesla beater, and I expected them to have very smart software. Even if the software was created by a junior dev, some of the decision of BYD make no sense, needless to say for a big dev team it's really shocking.
Remember Bjorn is a Tesla fanboy to the core, many are on YT. A BYD fanboy can have an entire channel nitpicking on Tesla faults, build quality, recalls, autopilot accidents, and legal contests.
@@protagonist9716 That's relative, I feel like Bjorn is pretty impartial and seems to like a lot of other brands like Mercedes, Lotus, some BMW, some NIO, etc. He might be bias like everyone is, but I think it's unfair to say he is a "fanboy to the core". It's hard to say any other EV has a better or on par thermal management with Tesla. In any case almost everything he point out can and will most likely be fixed by BYD with a software update, he is even actively trying to help them doing so.
@@protagonist9716 ahh yes the usual chinese brands defenders making their appearance as usual

I have got the Atto 3 for 10 months now in Australia, never experienced the fast charger disconnecting problem you had, we have Evie & Chargefox networks in Australia, never failed once.
That is call Euro-North American bias I guess. The Mercedes EV are fareing pretty bad in China. But some how being praised in Europe
I had it disconnect twice in Toowoomba, which I'm now fairly convinced was this fault.
I also had it bizarrely disconnect every time I turned on the air con the other day at my local fast charger.
Great report Björn, valuable info about how and why the Atto fails at fastcharging on longer trips. This and your funny character is why we love to watch you!
Looking forward to learn, if the entire BYD model lineup on e-platform 3.0 acts like this.
All BYDs do this
@@UltraJaff Aaargh.
Apparently Han too at least
I have an Atto3 and a M3. Both great vehicles. The Atto's great attraction is its value proposition being about A$15,000 cheaper than the M3 while being accessorised to a better level.
Personally I havent encountered fogging (however, I live a dry climate) nor charging problems, noting there are very few fast chargers around here over 120KW.
We normally use the M3 for longer trips as it gets about 10-15% greater range than the Atto (both have 60KWhr batteries). However, we have done a few longer trips in the Atto with no problems at all. I normally stop for a top up every 250km but have occassionally gone 300km. By comparison, the M3 can easily make 350km.
It would be super interesting for Bjørn to do a 1000 km challenge in a new Model 3 SR with BYD Blade battery. Comparing to Atto 3 for charge curve, "intelligent cooling," and charger compatibility to see what limitations the battery pack has, if any, vs. software limitations.
What? The model 3 Sr currently only uses catl lfp and only the made in Germany model Y sr rwd uses the byd blade lfp cells.
@@4literv6 Thanks for the correction. I guess it is the Model Y SR that I would like to see Bjørn test. That way we could see how the Blade battery pack performs with Tesla software and octovalve heat pump. Comparing to BYD Atto 3 and to other Tesla models without the Blade battery would be very interesting, IMO.
@@georgepelton5645 welcome, I totally agree btw. 👍🏻
Some leaked owner charging tests show it charges slightly better than the catl lfp pack's.
And then there's the new highland refresh pack which is rumored to be the catl m3p chemistry at 66kwhs gross capacity.
Will this be the first lfp cells to hit 200+kws while charging?
It's said those cells match the best nmc cells from 2020 in pack level energy density and for 15% cheaper than existing lfp cells go for. Insane lfp cell tech has come so far so fast.
And tesla is supposed to be switching the base 300 mile semi over to using lfp cells. 🤔
@@georgepelton5645 you won't see "how the Blade battery pack performs with Tesla software", packs are different. The level of technological difference is like between Cessna 152 and Airbus A350.
@@ora10053 Interesting. Where is the info on Tesla's BYD Blade pack design vs. Atto 3 Blade pack?
I believe the foging comes from the bad thermal management design where the AC compressor is fully used to cool the battery but none for cabin climate. So it's like turning off the AC when it was running before. The rest of the condensation water gets instantly picked up by the warmer air -> foging.
oh, how smart, humidifier feature, that's something new
Strings for the Bass🤣...woldclass by Bjorn
Björn, as always great video!
Not sure if you have noticed the Model-3 runs the heater fan for about 15 minutes after you stop and park. What the car is doing here is running the fan without the heat pump to dry the AC coil so that when you start again the windows don't fog up. After running the AC the cooling coil gets wet so once the car's heat pump switches off the water is evaporated back into the car. This is causing the window fogging. Tesla has figured this out but no other car has this drying cycle.
This is also to prevent molt and a bad smell after a time, pretty clever
Kia, and I presume hyundai, does it as well
My model 3 smell like shit in 6 month and I need to replace cabin filter. And the fxxking thing blowning hot moist air in my face when I pulling it out from the garage. It does run thr fan, but it is when Im plug in. The compressor is running as well. It has always like that since I pick up the car. It is not a very pleasent experience in the winter without a ti fog treating the windshield
Only Tesla does this procedure presently.@@Erigion
Actually my Atto does this also. The cooling system typically runs for ten minutes after you park the car. After a short period some water usually appears on the garage floor from the cooling system drain line.
I have never had any fogging problems so wonder if there is a problem with the build or configuration of some Atto models.
I would in the first instance check to ensure the aircon drain line is properly installed and is clear of blockages.
I have had fogging problems in other vehicles I have owned and it has always been the drain line, kinked, blocked (or some cases missing or broken). A blocked line in particular causes water to back up into the heat exchange unit where it vaporises causing steam and fogging.
Thank you very much, Bjørn! When I see here that a Chinese manufacturer (with its own battery production and expertise in this area) delivers this, I do not see the downfall of the German car industry (even as a German) coming yet 😉. However, it is good that the pressure to innovate from Asia (especially from Korea) is waking up the established manufacturers from their dormancy...hopefully they will be really awake soon 🙌. And finally, when you look at the price of at least ~45k Euros in Germany, this should issue a clear purchase warning 😁
This! How someone would buy this car in the current market is beyond my understanding
@@FGGiskard from German YT Reviews, I really wasn‘t aware this way, Bjørn showed up all the fails in the 2 videos.
I believe the german auto industry is way undervalued currently, everybody and their dog thinks these newcomers are changing up everything and it's a whole new market. It's not. Teslas earnings are now getting close in profitability to what the auto industry has been at for decades (which is a steep decline) because...there is competition. Are the german companies delivering the cheapest cars on the market? no, but they never did. thats not what they have been competing on.
I think it's a matter of time before europeans go back to buying mostly european cars, in the EV market as well, the anomaly that we've been seeing is only because there just hasn't been any competition for tesla, but now there is, and that competition will get stiffer as time goes by.
The chinese are so far not really impressing, the MG4 looks nice and cheap, polestar is just ...volvo, also a high priced "german level" manufacturer. so it's not like it's a whole new world of competition, there has always been hard competition in the auto industry, and going forward that will continue. german brands will eventually find their way into the hearts and homes of many europeans again.
@@FGGiskardsome Tesla cars catch fire too but people are still buying them. It's the same thing
@@centralkingdom8141 Occasional issues are something entirely different than design flaws present in every car.
If a car like BYD Atto 3 cost ~15k EUR less than the Tesla Model Y, then yes, perhaps there would be some merit in buying it despite all of its issues that are present in every car by design. However, when BYD tries to price it the same as Tesla Model Y, I see no rational reason to prefer BYD Atto 3.
I wonder what happens to all these cars throttling if you charge in a hot summer day in Spain at 40ºC
Implosion
They’ll slow to a halt, and clog the chargers.
have a 40kwh leaf in Portugal... it's not a pretty sight in the summer... some rapidgate to 18kw when they could do 43/44 kw at same soc level... the cells expand in the long run and break insulation causing battery failure... this mostly happens when car used as Uber with multiple DCFc a day..
“All these cars” being what cars specifically?
Most common brands and cars don’t throttle mate. Certainly not as much as this specific car. And it’s not as if you can find Atto3 on every corner on the street😊
@@gerardhaus8150 He probably means “all these BUD Atto 3’s”. Every well engineered car doesn’t throttle in any situation unless you push it hard.
Ours had the fogging issue but since the 5000km service when I complained about it, the issue has been fixed. The highest power chargers around here are BP 75kW units, but I never saw above 66kW when I used them.
how this can be fixed, did they remove drain plug or added silica gel?
@@vipvip-tf9rw It is a software issue. The next scheduled OTA update here (NZ), includes more changes to the climate control apparently.
@@flatslide3250 how can fogging be connected to software, was it working on closed cycle during defogging

@@bjornnyland ABC - always use climate! 😉 oh shit, didn't work out!
We value your tests, as you find issues that big media car testers miss. On the fogging issue: modern home AC systems usually have a drip line for condensation to prevent mold and window fogging. Does BYD need to stop overheating and add a drip line?
This is why we need tests like the 1000k to let people know what evs are good and bad.
I'm not so sure, most people just conmute from home to work and family/friends, so it doesn't really apply in those cases
@@EstebanRivera-lr1zg sure, but who buys a car knowing it will suck on a longer drive when other brands have thay problem solved? You never know when you need to take a roadtrip.
@@chestodor4161isn't that all relative though?
I bought my Atto knowing it doesn't charge as fast as a Tesla. The rapidgate stuff is interesting but I did a 1260km drive in warmer weather than that and didn't experience it - I suspect largely because I wasn't driving as fast (100-110km/h speed limit roads) and I broke the drive up over 2 days.
I found the temperature stuff interesting, and the resultant charge faults interesting too - might explain why I had one or two charge faults with mine. Bizarrely I had one recently where the charger stopped whenever I turned on the air conditioning. The fogging is a known issue and the V1.6 software update arguably made it worse. But the last 4% disappearing thing likely wouldn't have happened again - that's something that happens only if the car is driven several months without going below 10%.
Anyway. It holds up reasonably well against most of its competitors. Considering it's a budget EV it's not bad; I'm hearing in the EU it's as expensive as the model Y but it undercuts the base model 3 here in Australia by $AU6,000, that's 3500 Euro, nearly 3 times that difference for the Y here, all of which are Chinese built.....
@@chestodor4161unless you are a Road warrior. People dont do 1000km in one day often. That is even for people in big countries like canada and usa. Let alone Smaller country in Europe

For charging - I needed to plug in the car first and then unlock the charger - the other way around it failed the handshake.
But some chargers can not be unlocked when the cable is already in the car…
This was nightmare …
thank you for reviewing and criticizing those electric cars in the market and spend time to help them improve!
Yeah would be nice if they can fix charging most time mine atto peaking up to 80 then dropping fast and stay at 58-59
Are those lights blocking the cooling at the front, an add on? I do wonder as you say that they will reduce incoming air enough to make a difference.
Nice! I agree with your conclusion, it doesn't make sense compared to legacy carmakers and even less with Tesla.
Really looking forward to the nerdy video of the rapidgating!
In the last days in Portugal the day temperature is 38 to 40 degrees C. We need you here on “Vacaciones” testing
Wow that shows how good the Model Y is in this pricing bracket - that's why it's the most successful EV right now! Great review as always.
In other markets the Y is way more expensive than the Atto.
If you pay that amount of money, you should get reliable parking sensors and auto brake functions. The current model Y has neither.
Model Yawn is oldest. Yawn sleep time
@@protagonist9716 who cares? When would that be a problem if it means higher reliability and efficiency?
Shieeet! Well well well! Plug and pray! Only one Bjorn

It would be good to know what software version this car is running. V 1.6 has improvements for DC fast charging. It would be great so see the difference this update has made. (It even addresses the fogging issue.)
Agree
For foggy windshield try the wipers as sometimes fog is on the outside and internal defogger does not work well in those cases.
This was obviously on the inside.
That's super interesting. Software is so important. It makes me wonder why companies like Tesla put considerable resources into just software and every other company like especially VW thinks they are smarter by just cutting corners on the software. That CCS charge door is so cumbersome. You have to open and close it manually and remember to put back those TWO plug covers. I would think that the plug covers could have been integrated into the door or just pull them out altogether.
Supposedly some of the issues should be "improved" in the 1.6.x updates coming in August. Maybe a re-test then? ;)
* Improved ventilation function after Air Compressor shut off to prevent fogging after shut-off in cooler temperatures.
* Optimization of user experience, improvement of driving comfort.
* Optimization of DC charging power, extend high-power charging duration.
* Improved DC charging gun locking communication.
* Improved compatibility of wireless charging function.
* Added Dynamic range estimation function, in addition to NEDC (in DiLink vehicle settings) to reflect real time range based on current use.
BYD had to pull the 1.6 OTA due to some issues, but will start rollout today August 10th again.

@@greggpon7466The high price on Atto 3 in Europe is because of tariffs and taxes. Otherwise it is much cheaper than the european and American cars. So its a way to protect the market.
Its almost double the price here compared to chinas price on it.
And as stated, the leasingprice is where the value is. Here the leasing of Atto3 is at around 1/3rd of a model 3/Y
@@greggpon7466 Im not sure exactly why but I think it is because Chinese companies get a harder time than American/EU in that sense to protect the markets. If they played by the same rules then we would be flooded by chinese cars in no time.

There is a way to temporarily get rid of the annoying beep when on the highway using lane centering:
When you engage cruise + steering, let go of the steering wheel until it starts beeping. You read that right, so only do it on straight, open, well marked roads (i.e. freeways/highways) only.
On the FIFTH beep, DISABLE lane centering function, and AFTER THE SIXTH BEEP (which is when the beeping should stop altogether), enable lane centering function again.
Do not touch the wheel at all during the above process.
Once this is achieved, it will not nag you again UNTIL:
You apply torque to the wheel
Car fails to read lines
You use indicator
You press the brakes.
Basically, anything you do that affects the steering or cruise function, will cancel this "hands free" mode. Simply repeat the process to achieve it again.
I managed to drive ~300KM down the coast (Australia, east coast) without having to touch the wheel!
I want to know the story of how someone discovered that!
@@Yelonek1986 Simpler solution is to just use Konami Code

I find the Atto's self steering (really a lane centering system) quite good. It does complain though if you take your hands off the wheel.
So because the BYD had problems with the charging on Ionity, I would be curious to see if it also has problems with other networks (e.g. Kempower)
And again you can see how good the Hyundai IONIQ pre-facelift was back then. With such a small battery, you can travel faster than with some new vehicles.😎💪🏻

It’s objectively worse in all aspects!
Not here. Where do you live?
That's Europe's problem. It only costs 19000 USD in domestic market

With regards to the fogging, I wonder what way the heat pump circuit is connected on the vehicle because while rapid charging the system is cooling the batteries which would be also extracting moisture but when you start driving again your requesting heat into the cabin. I wonder if the heat pump circuit is connected in such a way to create moisture on the interior evaporator while cooling during charging and then when heat is requested that moisture evaporates and fogs up the interior. Maybe there is no solenoid disconnecting the interior cooling loop to the battery cooling loop
This would also explain why the vehicle immediately stops cooling once the charger is disconnected because the passenger compartment is requesting heat. The system would not be able to provide heating to the passengers and cooling to the battery at the same time. Poor design and poor software.
Nope. When charging is stopped, the car is still off and we haven't requested any heat.

Yesterday I drove my BYD Atto 3 Design for a longer route of over 500 km, the first charge on the Ionity went exactly as it should, then I drove another 180 km at 130 km/h in 4C and the charge via the Ionity started well 80+ kW at 19 % but after about 3 minutes the power dropped to 44 kW and gradually dropped to 31 kW even though I only had 50% battery. does this mean that I overheated the battery and the car limited the charging speed? Atto 3 has no battery cooling? The car did not blow at all during charging, it was completely silent, it did not try to cool the battery through the air conditioner at all. I will be grateful for any detailed information.

88kwhs in 2023? A 2013 model s tesla could charge at that rate. 😂
*kW
@@danielstefanovic2604 truly pathetic imo. If the Koreans can almost match tesla with the egmp series?
Why can't other legacy ice oems do the same. Byd makes a lot of ground up 2nd and 3rd gen evs now and all are lower perf, less efficiency, slower charging and top speed is often limited to just 100-110mph. Vs the tesla segment competitors.
My experience is very similar although I get a bit of range anxiety at around 350km. I think mine could get to about 420km before running flat. I try to recharge at 300km.
Why is not the mg4 64kwh in the time chart. It did it in 10.10 hours. Great video by the Way.
Not an suv. Bjorn usually tries to compare similar cars
Thats damn fast for a budget chinese
Lifepo4 can get hotter than li-ion . So I don't think it overheated but maybe a bug?
Fogging issue: i could not catch it, is there an outside air/recirculation option? How was it set?

@@bjornnyland it's a mystery then :)
Damn, this would be pretty horrific in a hotter climate, such as Thailand or Australia. Do you think there are different software packages out there for different zones?

@@bjornnyland are they active louvers or fixed? either way they ;look like they'd impact on the air flow considering they would have been designed to specific cooling parameters
If you look on their pack internal design then these cooling probelms are not surprising. Software won't fully fix it.
When you have cheap hardware, good software becomes absolutely crucial. You need to extract every bit of performance out of the hardware in order to stay on top. They aren't doing that here. And what makes it worse is it doesn't take a genius to figure out what to do.
Are LFP batteries more prone to overheating?
No
guys what was name of app that he is using for following battery temp and power ?
Car Scanner
thank you
Playing those strings while driving to provide bass may be a problem with safety. 😉
these are pretty creative in my opinion, but the engineers didn't consider safety issues definitely, there are other design issues with the software he didn't show, the software is really laggy and the navigation and so on hard to use, mismatched car body parts etc. Plenty of problems if you drive it regularly.
I had the BYD Atto 3 60kW as a loan car for 5 weeks, it ALWAYS fog, and build quality is terrible, when the heatpump comes on the whole brake pedal vibrates, when the wiper changes direction, you can feel the vibration via the brake pedal. So NVH is through the roof.
Edit: you can hear the noisy BYD heatpump at 7:00 mark in this video, even worse when you stand outside the car.
*kWh
Yeah never noticed that, no problem with build quality.
@@bjornnyland Yes, 60kWh, missed the H as I was rushing to type a comment so you'll see it, #1 priority!
@@mohgujaithat sounds like my 2022 model 3. Freaken compressor must be spining at 10k rpm at max out put.
the byd fires make sense to me now, the thermal management byd is doing is not so good.
So this test simulates conditions for people who need to do 1,000km journeys regularly, living in cold countries? Good effort and surely useful for such owners/users. In my case, living in an equatorial climate and charging overnight on AC a few times a week it’s interesting theoratical scenarios.
I regularly drive 650km plus in a day, this number of charges would melt my head. 1200km on a tank of diesel all day every day for me instead.
current ev car isn't designed for daily over 300km/miles
Do all BYD BEV have LFP?
Yes, byd=lfp
In Thailand today a BYD Atto3 started to burn during charging. Is it possible that this can have something to do with overheating of the battery? I live in Thailand and have just bought an Atto3. Some chargers are not covered by roof and are exposed to the sun. Therefore chargers are very hot. Another possible reason?
did u regret or happy with the car?
@@Dom-bn1ru I am very happy with my car. Do you want to know something Else? Just ask!
@@svein03 ahh cheers mate, so do u think the atto 3 is good in a tropical weather like Thailand? How many kilometres do you get for full charge? And how do u feel about the build quality of the car so far?
Thank you in advance!
It's interesting approach from Chinese manufacturers. They seem to not push fast charging and high battery temperatures like Tesla for example but other brands as well. For example I was reading specs for lg m50 cell that is used in model 3 long range. And by Lg specs maximum continuous charging speed is 0.7c if I remember and that's roughly 60kw. Tesla is hammering that pack with up to 250 kw. Also in this test byd is keeping battery temp under 45c, that is very reasonable, but for example Tesla plaid in Bjorn test on Autobahn was going up to 63c, that's way out of specs.
Yes, fastcharging are destroing batteries
Seems like BYD battery management team has never heared of PID controllers. The cooling software resembles code I have written when I was 16.
First time watching as it came up in my recommended for some reason. Not impressed if this is what is the state of play in 2023. My main concern being the charger reliability shown in this one trip. I hope things get better very soon as the fossil fuel industry doesn't need more ammo to lobby with as they give out enough false information without needing facts.
The chart was interesting reading especially the Hyundai, Citroen, Kia & Tesla efficiency - that would be my 1st priority when buying, alongside initial cost.
