      +Dhoralynn Gonzalez Aw thank you for this lovely comment!!! Sorry for the delay in responding, I was out of town and I'm just getting caught up lol. I'm so glad you found this easy enough to want to work with stretch fabrics! Honestly they are my favorite to work with (which may be obvious since I only have a few non stretch tutorials lol) because they're so comfortable and easy to wear! I really hope you enjoy working with them too... if you're just trying to get the feel for them, run a few seams on a little spare stretch fabric and try a few stitches out to see what you like! Good luck sewing and I hope you have fun! Thanks for watching 😃

    I just have to say thank you so much! This tutorial was so great! I made my first piece of clothing last night with my grandpa guiding me as I went while using a pattern. It was an A line skirt, and it was okay. Stitching was good but the cut and fit didn't end up great. HOWEVER, today I realized I wanted something different I wanted a skirt that I would feel comfy in, and I found your video, and by god this skirt came out perfect. I'm so proud of how it looks and I have to say it's mostly due to your directions being so clear as well as how you formatted your video which made it easy to understand the steps and it made the process easy. I finished it in about 5 hours and I can't explain how happy I am. Thank you so much! I can't wait to look through more of your videos to see what I can learn!

    • @ComicatCreations
      @ComicatCreations  Před 7 lety +1

      +BLaCC BeaUTY Thanks so much! Sorry for any confusion. The best way I can instruct is to start by taking your waist measurement wherever you want your skirt to sit on your body. Then plug that number into the calculator and divide it by 3.14 (this is the formula you have to use to be able to draw out the waist of a half circle skirt based on your measurement). Whatever number you now have on the calculator, you'll want to then subtract 0.5 inches (this will build in seam allowance when you draw the skirt out so you'll have that half inch seam allowance to sew the skirt to the waistband). So basically the whole thing you'll be plugging in to the calculator is this:
      YOUR WAIST MEASUREMENT divided by 3.14; press enter, then subtract 0.5 to get the final number. The final number you get is what you'll draw from the corner of the fabric in a curve to get the waist, which I show on the video.
      And the other calculation is for the length which is just deciding how long you want the skirt to be (you can use your tape measure and measure from your waist to wherever you want the skirt to stop), then add an inch to that number. This is so that once you sew the skirt to the waistband, and then once you hem the skirt, it will be the length that you want.
      I hope that helps! I'm not a math person at all but that's the formula you have to use so just plug in those numbers like I explained into the calculator and you will be good to go. Good luck! Thanks for watching and commenting!

    @GypsyPrincessJessi Před 3 lety +1

    What is a stretch stitch?

    • @ComicatCreations
      @ComicatCreations  Před 3 lety

      A stretch stitch is basically a stitch designed to work with stretch fabric. It’s important to use either a stretch stitch or a zigzag stitch on stretch fabric because the stitches will stretch with the fabric whereas if you use a regular straight stitch it can break when stretched. For example if you use a straight stitch on this skirt and go to pull it on over your hips you’ll probably hear the seams breaking because they’re not made to stretch, but if you use a stretch stitch the seams will stretch with the fabric as you pull it on, so no ripped stitches 😃 You can usually look in your machine’s manual to see what stitches are designed for stretch fabric! One of my go to stretch stitches is called the triple stretch stitch which on my machine’s dial looks like three little straight stitches right next to each other.
      I’ve actually made an updated tutorial of this same style skirt which I think may have a few extra tips in it if you’re looking for a little more info about sewing with stretch fabric! Here’s that tutorial if you wanna check it out: czcams.com/video/mjtqDnDfDXM/video.html
      I hope I’ve been able to answer your question!

    I love this, but I would like to add pockets!!!

    • @HeathsHarleyQuinn
      @HeathsHarleyQuinn Před 3 lety

      Pockets are an easy add! Easiest is to just add one pocket and back the back seam a side seam instead, cut two in a half oval shape, but on the diagonal and be sure that when you pin the pocket in, you're only sewing the edge of the corresponding skirt seam to the pocket and not sewing it shut! Slip stitch the exterior ends as necessary.

    How do you make this but with an elastic

    • @ComicatCreations
      @ComicatCreations  Před 4 lety

      I would suggest cutting out the skirt and sewing the side together first. Then instead of cutting out the waistband you could get a wide elastic waistband, measure it and sew it together at the size you want. Then match it up to the waist of your skirt with right sides together, sew around the waist to secure the waistband, and then you’ll have an elastic waistband instead of the fabric waistband. Sorry for the delay in response, I’ve been under the weather and am finally catching up. Good luck and thanks for watching!

    • @ComicatCreations
      @ComicatCreations  Před 3 lety

      I'm sorry I'm just seeing your question! Yes, this does need to stretch. If you're making it from denim, you'll need to add a zipper in the back instead of making it without a zipper like I have here. I don't have a tutorial for one with a zipper but I know there's lots of great tutorials on CZcams that will show you how!

      +SereneEcho13 Thanks so much, I'm glad you liked it! I believe the fabric was 59 or 60" wide. Great question - I will have to start including that in the description box of my new videos!! Thanks 😃

  • @stateofgrace03
    @stateofgrace03 Před 3 lety

    Can someone please tell me why you SUBTRACT your seam allowance??

    • @ComicatCreations
      @ComicatCreations  Před 3 lety

      Great question because you're right usually you add seam allowance! It's really hard for me to explain in text, but basically I subtract the half inch at the end to build in the seam allowance when drawing out the waist. If I didn't subtract that last half inch, I would measure from the corner and make marks for the size of our waist, then I would have to add another line a half inch closer to the corner to add the seam allowance for when we sew the skirt to the waistband. Since those new markings would be a half inch closer to the corner, I just subtract the half inch from the number we get to build in that extra fabric that way we don't have to draw out two sets of lines. It's hard for me to explain, but on one of my videos that's even older than this one, I make a half circle skirt where I draw out the waist without subtracting that half inch, then I draw another line a half inch in to add the seam allowance (you can see that part at about 1:40 on this video, although apologies because I talk SUPER fast in my old videos: czcams.com/video/ukIn-pL1ups/video.html ). Basically by subtracting that half inch, we just skip the part where we have to draw that second line for seam allowance. I hope that makes a little bit of sense! I just build it all in with the math so you only have one number to worry about and one set of lines to draw.

    • @ComicatCreations
      @ComicatCreations  Před 3 lety

      I'm sorry I'm just seeing this! I think it may be best to use a machine for this one, I worry that the hand stitching may break easily since this skirt stretches when you take it on and off, so I worry the stitches might break. I have another skirt tutorial that may be a little easier to make by hand because it uses cotton material instead of stretch fabric. Here's that tutorial if you're interested: czcams.com/video/bYrKDmgIbzU/video.html

    In some of your other videos you used a template, but I can't seem to figure out what kind of paper you used. A lot I've seen just use copy paper, but yours almost looks like tissue paper! I just can't figure it out. :)

    • @ComicatCreations
      @ComicatCreations  Před 7 lety +1

      In some of my videos I've used tracing paper because it comes in a big pack and you get pretty large pieces of paper (I used a 40% off coupon and got a big pad of tracing paper from Michael's or A.C. Moore and it lasts for quite a long time), but at times when I ran out of the tracing paper and couldn't get another pack yet (since it is a little expensive) I'll grab a piece of tissue paper, especially when I need to trace something. It's a super affordable option (a big pack is $1 from the Dollar Tree) and it works great for smaller things like sleeves because you can see through it to trace the sleeve! I've also seen other CZcamsrs use the back of wrapping paper which I thought was a great idea, so I've used that for a couple of my skirt templates when I don't need it to be see through, and that's a great option because you can get it discounted after holidays, plus it's a big piece of paper which is great for circle skirt patterns! I hope that helps :) Thanks for the comment!

      I rarely do any hand sewing, but I suppose you could make a skirt without a sewing machine if you'd like to! I'd recommend starting with the skirt from my tutorial called "how to make a skirt for beginners with any fabric" because you can use a basic cotton fabric that doesn't need any special stretch or zigzag stitches like this stretch fabric skirt does. You'd be able to hand stitch everything on that skirt with a regular straight stitch 😃
