  • Estate sales hold some real surprises in this video! A lifetime of fun antique and vintage goods pack three distinctly different homes, and we're combing through everything from well-organized collections to hoarded piles in basements. What will we find that our collectors will want us to rescue for them?
House #1 offers the best variety, with a patio full of Salterini wire furniture on display at insanely cheap prices before we even open the door. Local treats include TWA airline wings and a St. Louis purse by Caro-Nan, while a House of Representatives ashtray, good looking mirrors and a nice cabinet we can convert to a bar go in the pile to buy.
Then the digging starts! An Incolay box hides under a pile of linens, dad's best 1970s ties invite us to search through a clump, and a decaying basement holds some surprising vintage bargains (providing a good pair of gloves is on hand!). We pull out luggage, an unusual Treasure Craft piece and Leg-O-Matic chairs at prices too good to resist! (We also talk about why we must resist buying the leopard skin collar we find.)
Past the famed Gateway Arch we go to see Houses #2 and #3, where the houses themselves are the stars of the show! We talk about the pros and cons of Lane cedar chests, find lovely linens and restaurant ware, then discover the hidden Art Deco design delights that leave us saying, "i'll take the house!" Come along and enjoy our fun foraging through these incredible homes with original features that inspire our own restoration and decorating dreams.

In that last house, I saw the dining room China cabinet. I was just at a party and they had taken one like that and made a great liquor cabinet out of it. They bought it cheap because the trim on the doors was damaged. Added plate glass shelving inside for the glasses, battery fairy lights for lighting, and lots of bottles of booze on the bottom shelf. Millennials are finding creative uses for old furniture.

The colorful wooden spoon (7:42) is a famous Russian Khokhloma (folk painting). There are plates, all sorts of boxes/canisters, cutting boards, etc. The ones with silver/greyish base (instead of gold) are older and more valuable - they might have Made in Soviet Union or Made in USSR stamps on.

I've found goofy stuff on the second day, not often but it happens. Walked into one house, walked around, and asked about "that stuff in the glass" on the desk. I'd asked about jewelry, but there never was any ...ahem. The "junk in the glass" was for sale if I wanted it - found a Lalique butterfly, a gold bangle and two sterling ones. Paid about $2 for the lot. Nobody had even looked at it. That third sale - except for the stairs, I'd want the house too! That tile work - I wouldn't have messed with it either.

Lol! The first city you were in Des Perez is pronounced like Da Pear! My husband used to live near there in his early 20’s. It tends to flood quite a bit in much of the area including St Louis because of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. The buildings in lots of the areas are charming to look at, but there are also a lot of run down and derelict areas there as well. We moved away from Missouri over 6 years ago. But still visit often with family and friends every year. Fun video!

George, I have been trailing around after you on your travels like a lost puppy. It interests me that you are able to locate all these obscure little places so easily and so, I'm guessing, that for the man who regards old as gold, the availability of the technology of google maps or whatever tracking app you use must have been a game changer for you in terms of broadening the scope of your treasure hunting? So, without the new, the old might not get seen, right? Anyway, no matter how you get there I love following along and learning something new every single time. Thanks so much George.

It is more efficient than it used to be that's for sure! There's tradeoffs but tech has helped the business in many ways

@@TheAntiqueNomad Oh for sure - everything comes at a price. And, in a way, that is what your life is about isn't it? Working so hard to try and save the remnants of our past lives that new technology has so often pushed into obsolescence? Thankfully, people like yourself and others realise the cultural and historical importance of rescuing and preserving the many and varied items that reflect a place in time that is long gone. We can only hope that this interest in old things will continue long after we have gone and perhaps someone will build a huge sculpture made from old IPhones 🙂

Hi George! I was yelling at the TV, "George! Pick up that Green platter thing!" The pretty red Hibiscus small bowl you picked up was the dip part of the Treasure Craft 2 piece chip/dip. The green round large platter part was covered with little cabbage salt and peppers. :((

Oh! That’s interesting, I haven’t seen the hibiscus set in the wild, and it didn’t come up when I was researching the book. I’ll have to go find one now
