  • Hackery at its finest! Found 2 boilers wired together. No wonder the thermostats don't work! We found 2 boilers in this 2-family home wired together along with a mess of other unnecessary wiring and 2 dead zone valves! OMG đŸ˜± what were they thinking?!?!

I would stay away from labeling zone valve covers.Good concept but I would go directly on the pipe. I have had homeowners/other technicians take the covers off and mix them up. It screws everybody up on the next service call. Good work though as usual. Evan from New Jersey.

    Nice Vid !
Just so you know - the “OL” on the Electrical Tester actually means something like “Overload” as the measurement is out of the range that can be tested, you can think of it as Open Line when testing continuity, on an appropriate range, but you might also see it if you tried to test for example the 24V supply from the transformer on a 0-20V Voltage Range - try it & see if you like.
    Cheers xx

Hey mike! This is my take on it. For what it’s worth lol. The red and yellow being jumped together would have been the 24Vac to both thermostats(Rh) and the brown would be the (W) for one floor and the white would have been the (W) for the other. The brown should have been wired up to the corresponding motor wire of the zone valve motor, and the white would have gotten wired to the other, the other sides of the two motors should be wired together to 24v common. Than the end switches would be wired in parallel to TT. I would have wired the low water in Series with the TT.

That was once again very interesting for me.
I am also a plumber in Germany and also work with a Testo 320-2.
I am just amazed at the poor efficiency of only 83%.
This means that gas boilers have not been allowed to be operated in Germany for a long time!
Atmospheric gas boilers must have at least 89% efficiency and more, condensate boilers have an average efficiency of 97% -98%, approximately.
Very good job and really interesting for me.
Many tools and materials are the same.
    Greetings Mike the German plumber
    (sorry for my english :-))

    • @TheGhettoLobster
      @TheGhettoLobster Pƙed 2 lety +3

There is a ton of old "low efficiency" equipment in places like NY where I live. The thing is, while it may waste more gas, the equipment is very reliable, easy to fix and easy to source parts. Many of these boilers last 50 years. High efficiency equipment is over complicated, hard to source parts and dont not have the reliability and life expectancy. Whenever the government gets involved in heating and air conditioning they have this uncanny ability to fuck it up. Air conditioning is another great example. The good, low pressure, pure refrigerants are banned ( I dont care what anyone says about chlorine and the ozone thats a bunch of bullshit). Now you have "environmentally friendly" blends which just now getting discontinued due to not being environmentally friendly anymore? Haha. Materials in the coils need to be thinner to meet certain efficiency standards and combined with high pressure refrigerants everything is leaking. I'll take old school reliable system that work for 50+ years over this new stuff any day

@@TheGhettoLobster I agree 100% that there were systems here in Germany that worked great and lasted for a long time.
Then came the modern systems with compressed technology in a small housing and many problems.
It was always about delivering good work and service to my customers!
But the industry just wants to sell and we have to pay our customers for it.

Whenever I run into abortions like that, the first thing I do is start from scratch.
This means, I take a few pictures for reference, and then take it all apart and start testing each set of wires and label them as I test them. (If you ain't testing, you're guessing! That applies to wiring as well!)
All too often I find someone made a splice and buried it in a wall somewhere due to a remodel or something similar and they were too lazy to run new wires.
As soon as you saw there was one cable for both thermostats it was obvious there was a splice somewhere and likely the splice was messed up.
Glad you got it all figured out but I knew right away from the homeowner's answers, he wasn't telling you everything. It's likely he's the one who did the work and screwed it all up.
As always, thanks for the food. Please keep feeding us!
